The purpose of this work is to investigate the fundamental properties of the gradual muscle force potentiation. We investigated the dependence of force potentiation on both the pulse-amplitude and the pulse-duration with different ramp-up time. The experimental results showed that the force increment ratio (FIR) during constant electrical stimulation decreased with pulse-amplitude and also with pulse-duration. The FIR was greater with short ramp-up time in both the pulse-amplitude and pulse-width modulation. The feasible mechanism might be that the myosin light chain phosphorylation induces the force potentiation and it occurs only in the fast type muscle fibers which are recruited first. These observations indicate that muscle potentiation must be understood well for the accurate control of muscle force.

The purpose of this work is to investigate the fundamental properties of the gradual muscle force potentiation for the prediction of muscle force and body movement from the stimulation input with musculo-skeletal model. We investigated the dependence of force potentiation on both the pulse-amplitude and the pulse-duration. The experimental result showed that the force increment ratio during electrical stimulation decreased with pulse-amplitude. The force increment ratio decreased with short pulse-duration and was maintained to be constant with pulse-duration longer than $500{\mu}s$. A new model of the muscle potentiation based on these results is desired in the future.
The purpose of this study was to determine if any differences exist in eye contact before and after vestibulaar stimulation in mentally retarded children. The subjects of this study were 20 mentally retarded children with a mean age of 9 years and 8 months and a mean intelligence quotient of $30.4{\pm}9.1$. Vestibular stimulation was given for 15 minutes, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks from September 1 to September 30, 1989. Equipment used included a rocking-horse, see-saw and scooter board. Two testers used a digital watch calibrated to 1/100 second to measure object-eye contact duration and the Blocks and Shapes test for determining frequency of object-eye contact in the subjects. The results of this study were as follows : 1. There was a significant prolongation in the duration of eye contact after 15 minutes of vestibular stimulation (p<0.005). 2. There was no significant difference in duration of eye-object contact between the first and last vestibular stimulation. 3. There was no significant difference in the length of time of attention paid to objects (frequency of eye-object contact) before and after 15 minutes of vestibular stimulation on the first vestibular stimulation. 4. There was no significant difference in the frequency of eye-object contact between the first and first vestibular stimulation. In conclusion, there was u significant improvement in duration of eye-object contact on intrasession measurement in mentally retarded children. However, there was no significant improvement over time after 4 weeks of vestibular stimulation on intersession measurement. Nor was there any statistically significant improvement in frequency of eye-object contact over time during the study period.
Objective: This study was performed to investigate the effect of acupuncture at HT8 on brain activity in perimenopausal women using fMRI. Methods: 15 healthy perimenopausal women volunteered in the study. No stimulation, sham stimulation, duration of acupuncture treatment on HT8, and rotation of acupuncture treatment on HT8 were randomly given for 6 minutes, with 20 seconds' intervals. Results: 1. In comparison with sham stimulation(Sham-B) and duration of acupucture (S1-B, S1-Sham, S2-S1), the areas of fMRI signal activation areas were just like cases including no stimulation. But the areas of vision were activated in S1-Sham. 2. In comparison with duration of acupuncture(S1-B, S1-Sham, S2-S1) and rotation of acupuncture(S2-B, S2-Sham, S2-S1), the areas of vision were activated in duration of acupuncture, and Supplementary motor area(SMA) were especially activated in rotation of acupuncture. Conclusions: After using fMRI and analysing effect of acupuncture treatment at HT8, we could confirm that fMRI signal activation areas by acupuncture treatment at HT8 were different from areas by sham stimulation. And according to acupuncture stimulation methods with duration and rotation, etc, we could confirm the specific reactions of series, and could get useful basic data for research of acupuncture from now on.
This study was designed to evaluate the analgesic effect of low power GaAsAl laser on the pain threshold of mechanical stimulation using different treatment points, acupuncture point (zusanli) and non-acupuncture points(back). Furthermore, we investigated the analgesic effect of low power GaAsAl laser using the different duration and intensity of laser in mechanical stimulation induced pain behavior. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The threshold of mechanical stimulation was significantly increased by GaAsAl laser stimulation into zusanli point after 15 and 30 min after laser stimulation(P<05). However, the laser stimulation into non-acupoint did not affect the pain threshold of mechanical stimulation. with dose dependent manner. 2. In order to investigate the analgesic effects of BV depending upon different intensities of laser stimulation, the experimental animals were divided into three groups: 3 mW treated group, 6 mW treated group and 10 mW treated group. The low power GaAsAl laser stimulation was applied into zusanli acupoint for 30 min with different intensity of laser stimulation. Six and ten mW of laser stimulation significantly increased the pain threshold of mechanical stimulation at 15 min after laser stimulation as compared to that of control group(P<.05). Moreover, the analgesic effect of 10 mW laser stimulation was maintained for 30 min after laser stimulation (P<.05). 3. Finally, we tested the analgesic effect of 10 mW laser stimulation using different duration such as 10 min, 30 min or 1 hr after application of mechanical stimulation. In 30 min treatment group, the pain threshold of mechanical stimulation was increased at 15min and 30min after laser stimulation(P<.05). However, laser stimulation for 60 min dramatically increased the pain threshold of mechanical stimulation at 0 min after laser stimulation and the analgesic effect of laser stimulation was observed until 1 hr after laser stimulation. In conclusion, these data apparently demonstrate that low power GaAsAl laser has analgesic effect on mechanical induced pain model in rats. In addition, the treated point, intensity and duration of laser stimulation should be concerned before clinical application for pain management purpose.
Objective : Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an effective means of treatment of chronic neuropathic pain from failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). Because the success of trial stimulation is an essential part of SCS, we investigated factors associated with success of trial stimulation. Methods : Successful trial stimulation was possible in 26 of 44 patients (63.6%) who underwent insertion of electrodes for the treatment of chronic pain from FBSS. To investigate factors associated with successful trial stimulation, patients were classified into two groups (success and failure in trial). We investigated the following factors : age, sex, predominant pain areas (axial, limb, axial combined with limbs), number of operations, duration of preoperative pain, type of electrode (cylindrical/paddle), predominant type of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic, mixed), degree of sensory loss in painful areas, presence of motor weakness, and preoperative Visual Analogue Scale. Results : There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of age, degree of pain, number of operations, and duration of pain (p>0.05). Univariate analysis revealed that the type of electrode and presence of severe sensory deficits were significantly associated with the success of trial stimulation (p<0.05). However, the remaining variable, sex, type of pain, main location of pain, degree of pain duration, degree of sensory loss, and presence of motor weakness, were not associated with the trial success of SCS for FBSS. Conclusion : Trial stimulation with paddle leads was more successful. If severe sensory deficits occur in the painful dermatomes in FBSS, trial stimulation were less effective.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the effect of electrical stimulation of body composition in obese person. Subjects were 30s to 40s aged healthy workers(2004. 3. 8~4. 17) in the S general Hospital in Suwon and they were brought to manage obesity. Subjects were divided into control group(Female<0.85, Male<0.90) and study group(Female>0.85, Male>0.90) by WHR(waist-hip ratio) that is measured by Automatic body composition analyzer(InBody 3.0). And we divided the study group with randomized methods into group A(n=8) and group B(n=8). Then we compared and analyzed the change of muscle mass, body fat, abdominal girth, WHR, BMI(body mass index) after application of electrical stimulation, three times a week, for 30 minutes in each session with 50 Hz of pulse frequency, $20\;{\mu}s$ or $250\;{\mu}s$ of pulse duration. There was statistically meaningful decrement of body fat(p<0.05) and abdominal girth(p<0.05) but not of body weight, muscle mass, WHR and BMI in the control group after application of electrical stimulation with 50 Hz, $20\;{\mu}s$. There were meaningful change of abdominal girth(p<0.05), WHR(p<0.05) and BMI(p<0.05), but not of body weight, muscle mass and body fat after application of electrical stimulation with 50 Hz, $20\;{\mu}s$ in group A. We applied electrical stimulation with 50 Hz, $250\;{\mu}s$ in group B, then there were meaningful change of body weight(p<0.05), body fat(p<0.01), abdominal girth(p<0.01), WHR(p<0.05) and BMI(p<0.01) but not of muscle mass only. Consequently, the pulse duration is the main parameter of electrical stimulation that affect the body composition of obese person in this study and if we combined the diet control to reduce blood components we could have better result. So it would be more effective to manage localized obesity(in abdomen, thigh, upper arm, etc.) if you apply electrical stimulation considering the pulse duration.
A transcranial magnetic stimulation device is a complicated appliance that employs a switching power device designed for discharging and charging a capacitor to more than 1 kV. For a simple transcranial magnetic stimulation device, this study used commercial power and controlled the firing angle using a Triac power device. AC 220V 60 Hz, the power device was used directly on the tanscranial magnetic stimulation device. The power supply device does not require a current limiting resistance in the rectifying device, energy storage capacitor or discharge circuit. To control the output power of the tanscranial magnetic stimulation device, the pulse repetition rate was regulated at 60 Hz. The change trigger of the Triac gate could be varied from $45^{\circ}$ to $135^{\circ}$. The AVR 182 (Zero Cross Detector) Chip and AVR one chip microprocessor could control the gate signal of the Triac precisely. The stimulation frequency of 50 Hz could be implemented when the initial charging voltage Vi was 1,000 V. The amplitude, pulse duration, frequency stimulation, train duration and power consumption was 0.1-2.2T, $250{\sim}300{\mu}s$, 0.1-60 Hz, 1-100 Sec and < 1 kW, respectively. Based on the results of this study, TMS can be an effective method of treating dysfunction and improving function of brain cells in brain damage caused by ischemia.
This study has investigated the feasibility of 980-nm low-energy pulsed near-infrared laser stimulation to evoke auditory responses, as well as the effects of radiant exposure and pulse duration on auditory responses. In the experiments, a hole was drilled in the basal turn of the cochlea in guinea pigs. An optical fiber with a 980-nm pulsed infrared laser was inserted into the hole, orientating the spiral ganglion cells in the cochlea. To model deafness, the tympanic membrane was mechanically damaged. Acoustically evoked compound action potentials (ACAPs) were recorded before and after deafness, and optically evoked compound action potentials (OCAPs) were recorded after deafness. Similar spatial selectivity between optical and acoustical stimulation was found. In addition, OCAP amplitudes increased with radiant exposure, indicating a photothermal mechanism induced by optical stimulation. Furthermore, at a fixed radiant exposure, OCAP amplitudes decreased as pulse duration increased, suggesting that optical stimulation might be governed by the time duration over which the energy is delivered. Thus, the current experiments have demonstrated that a 980-nm pulsed near-infrared laser with low energy can evoke auditory neural responses similar to those evoked by acoustical stimulation. This approach could be used to develop optical cochlear implants.
Objective : It was well knownth at electro-acupuncture(EA) of ST36 in the hindimb affected a gastrointestinal disease. This study was designed to compare the factors affected EA`s effect such as stimulation duration, operating time and inserted needle`s length. Meyhods and Results : The lightly anaesthetized rat was used and serum gastrin level was observed in this study. Standard stimulation of ST36 consisted of a 5 mA at 2 Hz for a duration of 30 min, applied at 5 times the threshold to evoke muscle twitch. In the study of comparing stimulation duration, 60 min of EA produced no effect, whereas both of 10 and 30 min of EA increased gastrin level. When operating time was altered, both of 5 and 10 days only produced effects of increasing gastrin level. When comparing the depth of inserting needle, stimulation of the outer layer increased gastrin serum level as well as stimulation of full length. Conclusion : These data suggest that the difference of factors affected EA`s effect such as stimulation duration, operating time and inserted needle`s length produced difference effects.
