This paper describes the measurement of thickness of still air layer above fabrics and its relationship to structural properties of fabrics. Rayon fabrics - of both filament and spun - and wool nylon blended fabrics varied in terms of surface hairiness were used. Temperature and relative humidity above fabrics were measured at the various distances from the fabric surface. Increase in the thickness of fabric, fabric weight, yarn count, and crimp resulted increase in thickness of still air layer above fabric. Surface hairiness of fabrics as well as the structural properties were found to be related with the thickness of still air layer above fabrics.
Brake Horse Power (BHP) reduction ratios by air injection to the underside of the hull surface in an actual ship are predicted using an unstructured finite-volume CFD solver and compared with the sea trial results. In addition, air lubrication system installed on the existing vessel is investigated to find a good solution for additional drag reduction. As a results, it is found that the thickness of the air layer should be minimized within a stable range while securing the area covered by the air layer as much as possible. Furthermore, the amount of frictional drag reduced by air injection is found to be independent of surface roughness and still effective on rough surface. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that systematic and reliable air lubrication system can be designed and evaluated using the proposed method.
This analysis of numerical procedure is prediction of laminar flow and heat transfer at two dimension and steady flow in asymmetric sudden expansion channel. At former study, to analyse the flows with separation, the full Navier-Stokes equation is used, but there are many difficulties to analyse, and although significant progress has been made in the development of efficient computational methods for the Navier-Stokes equations, very large computation times are still required. In case of reward-facing flow, boundary-layer equation is used instead of full Navier-Stokes equation to analyse velocity fields, and result of this numerical analysis is good agreement with the given experimental study. In this case, since the computer time required for the boundary-layer calculation is an order of magnitude less than required for the solution of the full Navier-Stokes equation, this boundary-layer model provides a good approximate solution.
A heat exchanging system employing the impinging air jet is still widely used In the various fields due to its inherent merits that include the easiness in engineering applications and the high heat and/or mass transfer characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer and flow characteristics by placing a turbulence promoters in front of heat exchanging surface. In this study, a series of circular rods are placed at the upstream of a flat plate heat exchanger that is located at potential core region(H/W=2) of a two-dimensional impinging air jet. Heat transfer enhancement is achieved by inserting turbulence promoter that results in the flow acceleration and disturbance of boundary layer. The average Nusselt number of the flat plate with the turbulence promoters is found to be around 1.42 times higher than that of the flat plate without the turbulence promoters. Based on the results of flow visualization with a smoke wire, it is confirmed that the heat transfer enhancement is caused by the flow separation and disturbance of boundary layer by inserting the turbulence promoter.
Water management is important in proton exchange membrane fuel cell because the water balance has a significant impact on the overall fuel cell system performance. In fuel cell vehicle, the vehicle's power demand is dynamic; therefore, the dynamic water management system is required. This present study proposes a method to control the humidity of the input air in cathode side of the fuel cell vehicle. The simulation using several driving cycles shows the proposed air humidification control obtains a relatively good result. The liquid saturation level is seen constant at the target level although still there are small deviations at driving cycles which having averagely high power demands.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of clothing materials and the opening of the garment on the microclimate of the skin simulating system during the coupled heat and moisture transfer. To determine the effect of size and location of openness of the garment, openness was simulated by removing parts of the spacer ring of the modelling system. To evaluate the changes of humidity and temperature of air layer in the system, buffering indice, Kd and Pr, and efficiency of openness were determined. When the openness was imparted to the system, the transport rate of heat and moisture increased abruptly; at the total openness of 26.4%, which simulated the openness of neck, armhole and waist, Kd increased at least more than three times of the closed system. As the openness increased, the effect of clothing materials decreased gradually to lose its effect at the 60% openness and approached the value of nude. Temperature regulating index showed, however, higher value than nude which was apparently due to the still air layer.
This study shows the optimum attachment of Two-Way Shape Memory Alloy (TWSMA) springs onto thermal liner and its sewing method for the mass production of fire fighter's intelligent turnout gear. SMA springs were attached to the fabric by four different methods and stitched by two different shapes (square and wave). The durability of the attached springs was tested by laundering up to 50 cycles. Examined were whether the springs would remain attached to the fabric after repeated laundering, the shape memory effect and reaction of the springs, and the anti-corrosiveness of the springs. A Human-Clothing-Environment simulator evaluated thermal insulation according to attachment methods, air layer volume, and stitch types. The findings showed that silicon attached springs remained intact after repeated laundering; in addition, repeated laundering did not influence the responsiveness and anti-corrosiveness of SMAs. Air volume had positive relations with the insulation. Attachment methods or stitch methods had limited impact on the thermal insulation. As a result, a wave type stitch with silicone attachment was suggested as the optimum method to attach the SMA springs onto the intelligent turnout gear for fire fighters.
A practical single photon source for fiber-based quantum information processing is still lacking. As a possible 1.55-㎛ quantum-dot single photon source, an InGaAsP/InP-air-aperture micropillar cavity is investigated in terms of fabrication tolerance. By properly modeling the processing uncertainty in layer thickness, layer diameter, surface roughness and the cavity shape distortion, the fabrication imperfection effects on the cavity quality are simulated using a finite-difference time-domain method. It turns out that, the cavity quality is not significantly changing with the processing precision, indicating the robustness against the imperfection of the fabrication processing. Under thickness error of ±2 nm, diameter uncertainty of ±2%, surface roughness of ±2.5 nm, and sidewall inclination of 0.5°, which are all readily available in current material and device fabrication techniques, the cavity quality remains good enough to form highly efficient and coherent 1.55-㎛ single photon sources. It is thus implied that a quantum dot contained InGaAsP/InP-air-aperture micropillar cavity is prospectively a practical candidate for single photon sources applied in a fiber-based quantum information network.
This study reports on the development of intelligent clothing using a shape memory alloy (SMA) that forms a still air layer and provides thermal insulation depending on the environment temperature. SMA springs were prepared with Nitinol and have an original length of 6mm and a latent length of 20mm with a response temperature of $24.5^{\circ}C$. Hysteresis was evaluated at a temperature between $0^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. An experimental outdoor jacket that was attached with 30 springs was compared with a commercial jacket in terms of the microclimate temperature, humidity, and comfort properties by human subject tests in the microclimate chamber set at $5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the microclimate temperature of SMA embedded clothing system from the wear trials was higher than the commercial ones during the rest period after exercise, especially on the skin side. In addition the thermal, humidity, and comfort sensations of SMA embedded clothing were better than the commercial ones.
The Yeongdong region is frequently vulnerable to heavy snowfall in winter in terms of societal and economical damages. By virtue of a lot of previous efforts, snowfall forecast has been significantly improved, but the performance of light snowfall forecast is still poor since it is very conducive to synoptic and mesoscale interactions, largely attributable to Taeback mountains and East Sea effects. An intensive observation has been made in cooperation with Gangwon Regional Meteorological Office and National Institute of Meteorological Studies in winter seasons since 2019. Two distinctive Cold Air Damming (CAD) events (14 February 2019 and 6 February 2020) were observed for two years when the snowfall forecast was wrong specifically in its location and timing. For two CAD events, lower-level temperature below 2 km ranged to lowest limit in comparisons to those of the previous 6-years (2014~2019) rawinsonde soundings, along with the stronger inversion strength (> 2.0℃) and thicker inversion depth (> 700 m). Further, the northwesterly was predominant within the CAD layer, whereas the weak easterly wind was exhibited above the CAD layer. For the CAD events, strong cold air accumulation along the east side of Taeback Mountains appeared to prevent snow cloud and convergence zone from penetrating into the Yeongdong region. We need to investigate the influence of CAD on snowfall in the Yeongdong region using continuous intensive observation and modeling studies altogether. In addition, the effect of synoptic and mesoscale interactions on snowfall, such as nighttime drainage wind and land breeze, should be also examined.
