Investigation of Dynamic Property of Squeeze Film Damper Using Magnetic Fluid (자성유체를 이용한 스퀴즈 필름 댐퍼의 동특성 분석)

  • The paper presents the identification of dynamic property of a rotor system with a squeeze film damper (SFD) using magnetic fluid. An electromagnet Is installed in the inner damper of the SFD. The magnetic fluid is well known as a functional fluid. Its rheological property can be changed by controlling the applied current to the fluid and the fluid can be used as lubricant. Basically, the proposed SFD has the characteristics of a conventional SFD without an applied current, while the damping and stiffness Properties change according to the variation of the applied electric current. Therefore, when the applied current is changed, the whirling vibration of the rotor system can be effectively reduced. The clustering-based hybrid evolutionary algorithm (CHEA) is used to identify linear stiffness and damping coefficients of the SFD based on measured unbalance responses.

Continuous Contact Force Model for Low-Speed Rear-End Vehicle Impacts (차량 저속 추돌의 연속 접촉력 모델)

  • The most common kind of vehicular accident is the low-speed rear-end impact that result in high portion of insurance claims and Whiplash Associated Disorders(WAD). The low-speed collisions have specific characteristics that differ from high speed collisions and must be treated differently This paper presents a simple continuous contact force model for the low-speed rear-end impact to simulate the accelerations, velocities and the contact force as functions of time. A smoothed Coulomb friction force is used to represent the effect of braking, which was found to be significant in simulating low-speed rear end impact. The intervehicular contact force is modeled using nonlinear damping and spring elements with coefficients and exponents. This paper presents how to estimate analytically stiffness and damping coefficients. The exponent of the nonlinear contact force model was determined to match the overall acceleration pulse shape and magnitude. The model can be used to determine ${\Delta}Vs$ and peak accelerations for the purpose of accident reconstruction and for injury biomechanics studies.

Bilinear elastodynamical models of cracked concrete beams

  • Concrete structures are generally cracked in flexural tension at working loads. Concrete beams with asymmetric section details and crack patterns exhibit different flexural rigidity depending upon the sense of the applied flexural moment. In this paper, three different models, having the same natural period, of such SDOF bilinear dynamical systems have been proposed. The Model-I and Model-II have constant damping coefficient, but the latter is characterized by two stiffness coefficients depending upon the sense of vibration amplitude. The Model-III, additionally, has two damping coefficients as well. In this paper, the dynamical response of Model-III to sinusoidal loading has been investigated and compared with that of Model-II studied earlier. It has been found that Model-III exhibits regular and irregular sub-harmonics, jump phenomena and strong sensitivity to initial conditions, forcing frequency, system period as well as the sense of peak sinusoidal force. The constant sustained load has been found to affect the natural period of the dynamical system. The predictions of Model-I have been compared with those of the approximate linear model adopted in present practice. The behaviour exhibited by different models of the SDOF cracked elastic concrete structures under working loads and the theoretical and practical implications of the approach followed have been critically evaluated.

A Study on the Optimization of Suspension Characteristics for Improving Running Safety of Railway Vehicle (철도차량 주행안전성 향상을 위한 현가장치 최적화 연구)

  • A suspension is the most prior apparatus to decide vehicle's running safety and ride comfort, also the suspension stiffness is the most important parameter for the designing of the vehicle. Providing the strong stiffness with the primary suspension in order to improve the running safety with high speed, but it causes a problem with a curve running performance of a railway vehicle. Therefore, many studies deal with the optimal value of suspension stiffness. In this paper, we aim to optimize the suspension system to improve running safety by varying stiffness values of railway vehicle suspension. We have proceeded an analysis by design variables which are position, length, width, stiffness and damping coefficients of primary and secondary suspension to optimize the suspension characteristics. As a result of the optimization, we verified that the derailment coefficients of inside and outside of wheel are decreased in comparison with initial model.

Performance Predictions of Gas Foil Journal Bearing with Shim Foils (심포일을 갖는 가스 포일 저널 베어링의 성능 예측)

  • This paper presents a computational model of a gas foil journal bearing with shim foils between the top foil and bumps, and predicts its static and dynamic performance. The analysis takes the previously developed simple elastic foundation model for the top foil-bump structure and advances it by adding foil models for the "shim foil" and "outer top foil." The outer top foil is installed between the (inner) top foil and bumps, and the shim foil is installed between the inner top foil and outer top foil. Both the inner and outer top foils have an arc length of $360^{\circ}$, but the arc length of the shim foil is shorter, which causes a ramp near its leading edge in the bearing clearance profile. The Reynolds equation for isothermal and isoviscous ideal gas solves the hydrodynamic pressure that develops within the bearing clearance with preloads due to the ramp. The centerline pressure and film thickness predictions show that the shim foil mitigates the peak pressure occurring at the loading direction, and broadens the positive pressure as well as minimum film thickness zones except for the shortest shim foil arc length of $180^{\circ}$. In general, the shim foil decreases the journal eccentricity, and increases the power loss, direct stiffness, and damping coefficients. As the shim foil arc length increases, the journal eccentricity decreases while the attitude angle, minimum film thickness, and direct stiffness/damping coefficients in the horizontal direction increase.

  • This paper presents response property of the squeeze mode type mount using Magneto-Rheological fluid (MR fluid) . The MR mount for the isolation of multi-directional vibrations was constructed in this study. Both the mechanism and shape of the mount are the same as squeeze film dampers for a rotor system. In the present work, the performance of the mount was experimentally Investigated according to the magnetic field strength. The experimental results present that the MR mount can effectively reduce the vibration in a wide range of frequency by controlling the applied electromagnetic filed strength. Viscous damping and stiffness coefficients of the MR mount tend to be changed according to the variation of the applied currents In this study.

  • This paper proposes an analysis method based on the magnitude-phase dynamic theory for isolated power systems with static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs). The stability margin of an isolated power system is greatly reduced when a load is connected, due to the disadvantageous features of the self-excited induction generators (SEIGs). To analyze the control process for system stability and to grasp the dynamic characteristics in different timescales, the relationships between the active/reactive components and the phase/magnitude of the STATCOM output voltage are derived in the natural reference frame based on the magnitude/phase dynamic theory. Then STATCOM equivalent mechanical models in both the voltage time scale and the current time scale are built. The proportional coefficients and the integral coefficients of the control process are converted into damping coefficients, inertia coefficients and stiffness coefficients so that analyzing its controls, dynamic response characteristics as well as impacts on the system operations are easier. The effectiveness of the proposed analysis method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

Reflection and Transmission of Acoustic Waves Across Contact Interfaces

  • A linearized model for hysteretic acoustic nonlinearity of imperfectly joined interface is proposed and analyzed by using Coulomb damping to investigate the characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients for harmonic waves at the contact interface. Closed crack is modeled as non welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Based on the hysteretic contact stiffness of the contact interface, the reflected and transmitted waves are determined by deriving the tractions on both sides of the interface in terms of the discontinuous displacements across the interface. It is found that the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves are dependent on the frequency and the hysteretic stiffness. As the frequency of the incident wave increases, the higher reflection and lower transmission are obtained. It also shows that the hysteresis of the interface increases the reflection coefficient, but reduces the transmission coefficient. A fatigue crack is also made in aluminum specimen to demonstrate these characteristics of the reflection and transmission of contact interfaces.

  • This paper presents the static analysis, the modal analysis and the forced vibration analysis on engine structures to find out the structure-borne noise sources by finite element method. The deformation of engine structures under the maximum combu- stion gas force was calculated through the static analysis, and the resonance possibilities were predicted by the modal analysis which ascertains mode shapes and the corresponding frequencies of engine global and its major noise sources in engine surfaces were investigated with the forced vibration analysis by means of finding the transfer mobilities on engine surfaces due to the piston impact and the velocity levels due to the combustion in consideration of oil film stiffness and damping coefficients. Finally, the direction of engine structure-borne noise reduction can be estabilished by the above-mentioned analysis procedure and the reduction effect of cost on proto-type engine build-up is expected.

  • This paper presents a performance analysis of the 1st generation bump foil journal bearings for the micro gas turbine TG75. Static performances such as load capacity and attitude angle are estimated by using soft elasto-hydrodynamic analysis technique, and dynamic performances such as stiffness and damping coefficients are estimated by perturbation method. Rotordynamic analysis for TG75 is performed by using the bearing analysis results. TG75 rotor has 2 horizontal and vertical directional natural modes due to the bearing stiffness characteristics. TG75 rotor will be stably operated between the 1st bending mode at 33000cpm and the 2nd bending mode at 85500cpm. Unbalance response analysis results satisfy the API vibration criteria.
