To satisfy the requirement of magnetically suspended control moment gyroscope (MSCMG) that magnetic bearing can provide torque, a novel 4DOF hybrid magnetic bearing (HMB) with integrated structure was designed. Mathematical models of forces and torques are established by using equivalent magnetic circuit method. The current stiffness, displacement stiffness, tilting current stiffness and angular stiffness of the 4DOF hybrid magnetic bearing are derived by the mathematical models. Equivalent magnetic circuit method and finite element method (FEM) simulation results indicate that the force has a good linear relationship with both displacement and current, and the torque has a good linear relationship with angular displacement and current. The novel 4DOF HMB is capable of achieving control in both two radial translational degrees of freedom (DOF) and also two radial rotational DOFs. The 4DOF HMB is well adapted to MSCMG system, exhibiting advantages in the controllable DOF, light weight and easy to control.

The door stiffness is one of the important factors for the side impact. Generally, the researches have been conducted on the assembled door. A side impact door beam is installed in a door to protect occupants from the side impact. This research is only concentrated on the side impact beam and a side impact beam is designed. The cross section is defined to have an elliptic shape. An optimization problem is defined to find the design maximizing the intrusion stiffness within the specified weight. Design variables are the radii and the thickness of the ellipsoid. The analysis of the side impact is carried out by the nonlinear finite element method. The optimization problem is solved by two methods. One is the experimental design scheme using an orthogonal array. The other is the gradient-based optimization using the response surface method(RSM). Both methods have obtained the better designs than the current one.

This paper presents the new linear notion device so called \"inch-werm\" which gets large displacement by incrementally summing small displacements of PZT actuators. Dynamic stiffness of inch-worm is generally low compared to its driving condition due to the requirement of inch-worm like small size and light weight. This low stiffness may degenerate the positional precision of inch-worm. An inch-worm is realized using three PZT actuators, a monolithic moving device and a guide way frame. Finite element method and experimental approach are used to analyse the static and dynamic motion of the designed inch-worm. Command reference input is shaped to reduce the residual vibration of inch-worm. The practical feasibility of inch-worm is also examined by running tests.ing tests.

For the Space-borne optical imaging payload system design, light weighting and moderate stiffness of mirror and/or mirror fixation device is very important aspects. The front surface of mirror is regulated by optical performance requirement, but the shape of backplate of mirror is to be optimised while satisfing the required stiffness and weight. According to the results, the best shape of backplate cell is triangular. And also related geometric dimensions and the optimised mounting point of MFD(Mirror Fixation Device) is presented. Finally, natural frequencies and shpaes of mirror structure are analysed.
Discrete torsional bracing systems are widely used in practice to increase the strength of I-girders bridges. This paper proposes equations for lateral-torsional buckling strength, torsional natural frequency and stiffness requirements of I-girders with discrete torsional bracings. Firstly, the equations to calculate the critical moment of the I-girder with discrete torsional bracings are introduced. The proposed equations are then compared with the results of finite element analyses and those from previous studies. The equations to calculate the torsional natural frequency are also presented in the same manner. From the results, it is found that proposed equations agree well with results of finite element analyses regardless of the number of bracing points. Finally, the reduced formula for the total torsional stiffness requirement is proposed for the design purpose.
An improved method has been developed for the computation of the section forces and stiffness in nonlinear finite element analysis of RC plane frames. The need for a new approach arises because the conventional technique may have a questionable level of efficiency if a large number of layers is specified and a questionable level of accuracy if a smaller number is used. The proposed technique is based on automatically dividing the section into zones of similar state of stress and tangent modulus and then numerically integrating within each zone to evaluate the sectional stiffness parameters and forces. In the new system, the size, number and location of the layers vary with the state of the strains in the cross section. The proposed method shows a significant improvement in time requirement and accuracy in comparison with the conventional layered approach. The computer program based on the new technique has been used successfully to predict the experimental load-deflection response of a RC frame and good agreement with test and other numerical results have been obtained.

According to the requirement of wing weight estimation and frequent adjustments during aircraft conceptual design, a wing weight estimation method considering the constraints of structural strength and stiffness is proposed to help designers make wing weight estimations rapidly and accurately. This method implements weight predictions on the basis of structure weight optimization with stiffness constraints and strength constraints, which include achievement of wing shape parametric modeling, rapid structure layout, finite element (FE) model automated generation, load calculation, structure analysis, weight optimization, and weight computed based on modeling. A software tool is developed with this wing weight estimation method. This software can realize the whole process of wing weight estimation with the method and the workload of wing weight estimation is reduced because much of the work can be completed by the software. Finally, an example is given to illustrate that this weight estimation method is effective.

For important structures such as nuclear power plants, In-Structure Response Spectrum (ISRS) analysis is essential because it evaluates the safety of equipment and components installed in the structure. Because most structures are asymmetric, the response can be affected by eccentricity. In the case of seismically isolated structures, this effect can be greater due to the difference between the center of mass of the structure and the center of rigidity of the isolator layer. Therefore, eccentricity effects must be considered when designing or evaluating the ISRS of seismically isolated structures. This study investigated the change of the ISRS of an isolated structure by assuming accidental eccentricity. The variables that affect the ISRS of the isolated structure were analyzed to see what additional impact they had due to eccentricity. The ISRS of the seismically isolated structure with eccentricity was amplified more than when there was non-eccentricity, and it was boosted more significantly in specific period ranges depending on the isolator's initial stiffness and seismic intensity. Finally, whether the displacement requirement of isolators can be applied to the variation of the ISRS due to eccentricity in the design code was also examined.

This study is aimed to examine the influence of the rotational stiffness of U-shaped ribs on the local buckling behaviors of laminated composite plates. Applying the orthotropic plates with eight layers of the layup $[(0^{\circ})4]s$ and $[(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ})2]s$, 3-dimensional finite element models for the U-rib stiffened plates were setup by using ABAQUS and then a series of eigenvalue analyses were conducted. There is a need to develope a simple design equation to establish the rotational stiffness effect, which could be easily quantified by comparing the theoretical critical stress equation for laminated composite plates with elastic restraints based on the Classical laminated plate theory. Through the parametric numerical studies, it is confirmed that there should clearly exist an increasing effect of local plate buckling strength due to the rotational stiffness by closed-section ribs. An applicable coefficient for practical design should be verified and proposed for future study. This study will contribute to the future study for establishing an increasing coefficient for the design strength and optimum design of U-rib stiffened plates.
