In this work, an effective stiffness generated by internal loading for a planar 3 degrees of freedom RCC mechanism is investigated. For this purpose, the internal kinematic analysis and antagonistic stiffness modeling for this mechanism are performed. It is shown that the antagonistic stiffness could be effectively created at the center of the mechanism in its symmetric configuration.

A problem in the grinding with a small diametric wheel is the decrease of wheel speed. In order to resolve this problem, an accelerating unit which increases the wheel speed is recommended. In this paper, the accelerating effect of an accelerating unit has been investigated through the side-cut grinding experiments performed with a vitrified bonded CBN wheel in a machining center(MC). The static stiffness, normal force, and machining error were measured in the experiments. As the accelerating unit is attached on the column of machining center, the static stiffness of tool system is largely decreased. But as the wheel speed increased by the accelerating unit, this problem is overcome and machining efficiency is improved. The lesser the quill stiffness was, the higher the accelerating effect became.
The component-based method is widely used to analyze the initial stiffness of joint in steel structures. In this study, an analytical component model for determining the column face stiffness of square or rectangular hollow section (SHS/RHS) subjected to tension was established, focusing on endplate connections. Equations for calculating the stiffness of the SHS/RHS column face in bending were derived through regression analysis using numerical results obtained from a finite element model database. Because the presence of bolt holes decreased the bending stiffness of the column face, this effect was calculated using a novel plate-spring-based model through numerical analysis. The developed component model was first applied to predict the bending stiffness of the SHS column face determined through tests. Furthermore, this model was incorporated into the component-based method with other effective components, e.g., bolts under tension, to determine the tensile stiffness of the T-stub connections, which connects the SHS column, and the initial rotational stiffness of the joints. A comparison between the model predictions, test data, and numerical results confirms that the proposed model shows satisfactory accuracy in evaluating the bending stiffness of SHS column faces.

In this paper, the vibration characteristics of the trapezoidally corrugated plate are investigated by the analytical method. The corrugated plate is widely used as the structural elements because of its high stiffness and light weight. Because the corrugated plate is flexible in the corrugation direction and stiff in the transverse direction, it is treated as an equivalent orthotropic plate to analyze the corrugated plate simply. This equivalent plate must include both extensional and flexural effect to obtain the precise solution. The effective extensional and flexural stiffness of the equivalent plate are derived to consider these effects in the analysis. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, the comparison is made with the previously published results and ANSYS solutions. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

This paper investigates the natural modes of moduled floating structure with module unit connector. As an example structure, a floating parking place($120m\;{\times}\;60m$) is considered. In the evaluation of natural modes, numerical equations are formulated by FEM(finite element method) and the natural modes are solved by the subspace iteration method. By comparing results for various sizes of module unit, the effect of unit size is investigated. By comparing results for various stiffness of module unit connector, the effect of stiffness of unit connector is also examined.

The chevron rubber spring is used for subway vehicle as a primary suspension. Generally, the primary suspension has an influence to the running performance and not so much effect on the ride comfort in railway vehicle. But the stiffness of chevron spring is harder and harder as time goes on because of rubber characteristics. Therefore the dynamic characteristics such as ride comfort and derailment coefficient should be reviewed according to the stiffness variation of chevron rubber spring. In this paper the effect of chevron rubber spring on dynamic characteristics was studied by considering multi-body dynamics of railway vehicle on one straight line and seven curved lines.

The development of low rolling resistance tire with weight reduction in tire and vehicle may induce high level of tire/road noise, especially the rumble road noise on rough road. In this paper, the design factor for good rumble noise is considered in view of tire and vehicle. For the 3 mid-sized sedans, the rumble noise is very sensitive to the test vehicle. And it is concluded that the tire with high tread part stiffness and low sidewall part stiffness shows best rumble noise performance, and the rumble noise is in trade-off relation with cavity resonance noise. So, it is desirable to select and change proper construction design factors to have good tire/vehicle rumble noise.

After obtaining tensile and compressive stiffness as well as shear stiffness of elastomeric seismic isolator experimentally, those stiffness were modeled analytically using nonlinear computer program. To induce tensile stress due to overturning in the seismic isolators of an isolated frame for horizontal force, free vibration simulations generated by large initial displacement were conducted. Since elastomeric seismic isolator is weak for tensile stress, the axial stiffness of isolators shall be included properly in the analytical model to evaluate the uplift phenomenon of elastomeric seismic isolator.
In this study, strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s considering soil structure interaction for earthquake motions recorded on soft soil. The effect of stiffness degradation on strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios is investigated. The modified-Clough model is used to represent structures that exhibit significant stiffness degradation when subjected to reverse cyclic loading and the elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. The effect of negative strain - hardening on the inelastic displacement and strength of structures is also investigated. Soil structure interacting systems are modeled and analyzed with effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. New equations are proposed for strength reduction factor and inelastic displacement ratio of interacting system as a function of structural period($\tilde{T}$, T) ductility (${\mu}$) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}$/T).

The demand for drywall is increasing as the structural type of apartment building is changing to a rigid frame structure. At present, the thickness of the gypsum board used for drywall is mostly 9.5mm and is required to be changed to 12.5mm to improve the performance of the wall. A structural safety test has been conducted in accordance with KS F 2613 to verify the effect of changing the thickness of the gypsum board to 12.5mm in terms of improvement as to stiffness. As a result of the test, the stiffness of the drywall has increased by about 19.6% and the impact resistance by about 30.4%.
