  • An analytical procedure to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) frame subject to cyclic as well as monotonic loadings is proposed on the basis of the layered section method. In contrast to the classical nonlinear approaches adopting the perfect bond assumption, the bond-slip effect along the reinforcing bar is quantified with the force equilibrium and compatibility condition at the post-cracking stage and its contribution is implemented into the reinforcing. The advantage of the proposed analytical procedure, therefore, will be on the consideration of the bond-slip effect while using the classical layered section method without additional consideration such as taking the double nodes. Through correlation studies between experimental data and analytical results, it is verified that the proposed analytical procedure can effectively simulate the cracking behavior of RC beams, columns and Frame accompanying the stiffness degradation caused by the bond-slip.

  • Recently, the need for strengthening reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structure is increasing, particularly when there is an increase in load requirements, a change in use, a degradation problem, or some design/construction defects. Therefore, use of composite materials for structural repair presents several advantages and has been investigated all over the world. In this paper, the reinforced concrete slabs with epoxy - bonded AFRP sheed were experimentally investigated. Experimental data on strength. stiffness, material strain, deflection and mode of failure of strengthened slabs were obtained, and comparisons between the different flexural reinforcing schemes and reinforced concrete slabs without AFRP sheets were made It can be concluded that flexural strength of RC slabs strengthened with AFRP has increased, and that ductility of strengthened slabs has decreased.

  • In many previous studies, a prestressed concrete column has a larger flexural strength, shear strength and restoring force than a RC column. Recently, a precast prestressed concrete column is rising up a very rational column structure in that a economic aspect. In a precast prestressed concrete column, it makes in a factory. So, it needs a small construction site and acquires a higher durability than a cast in place concrete column. Seven precast concrete columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load to investigate the performance. It is designed with a hollow section and consisted of 4 segments. The main variables of the test were a amount of prestressed, a type of joints and a boding type of strands. The test results show that the performance of a precast prestressed concrete column; failure mode, maximum load, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation.

  • The response of a reinforced concrete element under cyclic shear is characterized by the hysteretic loops of the shear stress-strain curves. These hysteretic loops can exhibit strength deterioration, stiffness degradation, and a pinched shape. Recent tests have shown that the orientation of steel grids in RC shear elements has a strong effect on the "pinching effect" in the post-yield hysteretic loops. When the steel grid was set at a 45 degree angle to the shear plane, there was no pinching effect and no strength deterioration. However, when the steel grid was set parallel to the shear plane, there was a severe pinching effect and severe strength deterioration with increasing shear strain magnitude. In this paper, two RC elements subjected to revered cyclic shear stresses are considered to study the effect of the steel grid orientation. The presence and absence of the pinching mechanism in the post-yield shear hysteretic loops is studied using the Rotating Angle Softened Truss Model (RA-STM) theory.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to develop the moment magnifier method for long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. Nonlinear finite element analyses were performed for the numerical studies. Through the numerical studies, the long term behavior of the flat plate subjected to uniform or nonuniform floor load was investigated, and creep effects on the degradation of strength and stiffness of the slabs were examined. As the result, the creep factor was developed to epitomizes with creep effect on the flat plate. The moment magnifier method using the creep factor was developed for long-term behavior of flat plates. Also, the design examples are shown for verification of proposed design method.

  • A finite element method based on the two-dimensional progressive failure analysis considering material nonlinearity is presented for characterizing the strength and failure of the unidirectional-fabric hybrid laminated composite joints under pin loading. The 8-node laminated shell element is incorporated in the updated Lagrangian formulation. Failure criteria including the Maximum Stress and Tsai-Wu are used in conjunction with the complete unloading stiffness degradation method. For the verification, joint tests are conducted for the specimens with two different ply-number ratios of UD composite to fabric composite. Although there are some differences depending on ply-number ratios, the finite element model using the maximum stress criterion considering nonlinear material behavior predicts the failure strength best.

  • Aerospace industries are widely using honeycomb sandwich structures that it has high specific strength and stiffness, chemical material resistance and fatigue resistance. But, in repairing process of damaged areas, one of the problems is that delamination can be occurred in the sound areas during and/or after the exposure to the elevated curing temperature in case that the repair process is repeated. Therefore, this study was conducted Flatwise tensile, Drum peel and Long beam flexural strength tests to evaluate the degree of degradation of mechanical properties of the honeycomb sandwich structures by affecting thermal aging. As the results, the decrease of mechanical strength was observed at the specific specimen which is exposed over 50hrs at $127^{\circ}C$.

  • An experimental research program on end-plate beam-to-column composite joints under cyclic loading is presented. The major focus relates to the identification of the contribution of the concrete confinement in composite columns to the behaviour of the joint, on internal nodes and external nodes, together with an assessment of degradation of strength and stiffness in successive loading cycles. From the experimental results it was possible to identify the various failure modes and to fit the corresponding hysteretic curves to the Richard-Abbott and Mazzolani models. These curve-fitting exercises highlighted the need to adapt both models, either for improved ease of application, or to deal with some aspects previously not covered by those models.

  • We present a methodology to validate with monitoring data finite element models of existing concrete dams: numerical analyses are performed to assess the structural response under the effects of seasonal loading conditions, represented by hydrostatic pressure on the upstream-downstream dam surfaces and thermal variations as recorded by a thermometers network. We show that the stiffness effect of the rock foundation and the surface degradation of concrete due to aging are crucial aspects to be accounted for a correct interpretation of the real behavior. This work summarizes some general procedures developed by this research group at Politecnico di Milano on traditional static monitoring systems and two significant case studies: a buttress gravity and an arch-gravity dam.

  • This paper describes an experimental study of the cyclic performance of concrete beams reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms (PCP). The failure modes, hysteretic loops, skeleton curve, ductility, energy dissipation capacity and stiffness degradation of concrete beams reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms were analyzed. The results show that The CFRP prestressed prisms reinforced concrete beams have good seismic performance. The level of effective prestress and cross section of CFRP prestressed prisms had a little influence on the bearing capacity, the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of CFRP prestressed prisms reinforced concrete beams.
