  • The air purity-sterilizer was developed and the CFD and experimental studies were carried out in order to investigate the performance of a air purity-sterilizer. Overhaul and exchange efficiency were increased by the modularization of the air purity-sterilizer. The good performance was validated by the hot-wire measurements and flow simulations in the room. Mean velocities at the exit of the air purity-sterilizer were 0.91, 1.62, 1.99, and 6.14 m/sec according to the fan mode. And the flow visualization of pured air was shown by using CFD flow simulation in the room of 24, 50 pyeong. The results show that the air purity-sterilizer has a high performance enough to produce air purity-sterilizer on a commercial scale.

  • In this paper, we developed a continuous sterilizer in order to improve the productivity of the retort product. To this end, we design the sterilizer with a product inlet, outlet, and chain for continuously conveying the retort. The temperature analysis is performed to optimize the design parameters of the internal sterilizer. The experimental apparatus is developed to verify the productivity of the sterilizer based on the temperature analysis. The test is performed to optimize the evaluation parameters using Box-Behnken design method of a response surface methodology. From the test, the productivity of the continuous sterilizer is improved over 1,000 kg/h.

  • To verify the usefulness of a steam sterilizer equipped with an electronic Bowie-Dick test system, this study was carried out using two methods, utilizing both a steam sterilizer and an electronic Bowie-Dick tester. The first method is to confirm the error detection of the chemical Bowie-Dick test pack and the electronic Bowie-Dick tester in a malfunctioning sterilizer environment. For this purpose, the Bowie-Dick test program for the steam sterilizer was used to test three types of test packs commonly used in hospitals and the electronic Bowie-Dick tester by changing the set values of temperature, time, and vacuum frequency. The second is an experiment to check the sterilizer's normal operation with the electronic Bowie-Dick tester and the usefulness of grasping the cause of the malfunction. The results showed that the sterilization temperature was the same as that of the test pack at a temperature $1{\sim}6^{\circ}C$ lower than the reference temperature of $134^{\circ}C$. In the test with the sterilization exposure time as a variable, there was a normal discoloration at a time difference of 30~90 s. In the experiment using the number of vacuum cycles, the test was correct by performing the normal discoloration only at the normal condition of 3 times. The test results of 30 hospitals were 100 failure tests by a total of 291 Bowie-Dick tests. Of these, the failure factors related to an internal temperature that the chemical test packs could not detect were the greatest, and the four factors related to temperature, including the internal temperature, were found to be 71.18% of total malfunctions. In addition, the Bowie-Dick tester was provided within 30 min after the start of the Bowie-Dick test to confirm the performance of the sterilizer and the detailed cause. A steam sterilizer equipped with an electronic Bowie-Dick test system is used to manage individual sterilizers. In the current steam sterilizer with many temperature-related errors, it is possible to check the malfunction of the temperature difference that the test pack cannot detect, and the cause of error for the sterilizer is immediately detected after the test. The steam sterilizer equipped with the electronic Bowie-Dick test system assists with infection control with accurate sterilizer performance assurance.

  • The recent rise in SARS and bird flu infections around the world has raised the interest in studying the habits of air borne pathogens such as germs and viruses. In this study, simulations were carried out to predict the performance of UVGI air sterilizer at preventing airborne infections inside a car, based on the installation position and the removing effect of the UVGI air sterilizer. Simulation results showed that the UVGI air sterilizer was most effective when located at the rear side of the front seats. It was also showed that when the out-air mode and the UVGI air sterilizer were set to the highest capacity, the microbial safety levels were maintained in a car for 21 hours.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the problems of a batch-type sterilizer and design a continuous sterilizer to control the temperature deviation. The temperature deviation is analyzed with respect to design parameters such as a nozzle diameter, hole diameter, and nozzle length. The significant temperature parameters are optimized using the response surface methodology. An experimental apparatus is developed using the optimized design parameters. Using a field test, we show that the target temperature is obtained in about 7.3 minutes and the temperature deviation is improved about $0.84^{\circ}C$. The optimized parameters from the test are equal to the analytical parameters.

  • Recently, the use of UVGI system has been increasing in both medical and nonmedical buildings for the control of environmental microorganisms. In the present study, irradiance performance test of UVC lamp was carried out and indoor air sterilization effect of UV ray for preventing transimission of air borne contagion was investigated by using manufactured UVC air sterilizer. Experimental results show that the effective irradiance of UVC lamp is strongly dependent on air velocity and temperature in irradiance performance test. An individual microbiological killing effectiveness experiment also shows that the average kill rate of two microbiological samples such as bacteria and fungus is about $92\%$ by using manufactured UVC air sterilizer. Additionally irradiance performance experimental results also show that the ballast is very important factor to keep up irradiance performance of UVC lamp.
