The stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display provides a 3D image by inducing binocular disparity for the observers who wear special glasses. With the rapid progress in flat panel display technologies, the stereoscopic 3D display is becoming a new benefit-model of the current display industry, and several kinds of commercial stereoscopic 3D products have been released and are attracting people. Nowadays, the motion picture quality of the 3D image becomes as important as resolution or luminance since most of the commercial 3D products are 3D televisions or 3D monitors which are required to display a clear motion 3D image. In this paper, an analysis and simulation of the motion picture quality of stereoscopic 3D image is proposed, and a comparison of the motion picture performance among the current stereoscopic 3D technologies is also provided.

Recent technique has shown high interest in 3D stereoscopic image, one out of high immersion appearance techniques. Unlike general 2D image, 3D stereoscopic image is generated by 3D geometric information. Therefore, the lack of 3D geometric information sometimes imposes restrictions or makes editing more tedious. We propose a new unsupervised technique aimed to generate stereoscopic image which is estimated by depth-map information using image-based modeling from a single input image. The proposed system is implemented as the Adobe Photoshop(R) plug-in for considering generality and expandability, and also supports a preview function of interactive 3D stereoscopic image to determine stereoscopic view of high quality.
Image resizing (or scaling) is one of the most essential issues for the success of visual service because image data has to be adapted to the variety of display features. For 2D imaging, the image scaling is generally accomplished by 2D image re-sampling (i.e., up-/down-sampling). However, when it comes to stereoscopic 3D images, 2D re-sampling methods are inadequate because additional consideration on the third dimension of depth is not incorporated. Practically, stereoscopic 3D image scaling is process with left/right images, not stereoscopic 3D image itself, because the left/right Images are only tangible data. In this paper, we analyze stereoscopic 3D image scaling from two aspects: geometrical deformation and frequency-domain aliasing. A number of 3D displays are available in the market and they have various screen dimensions. As we have more varieties of the displays, efficient stereoscopic 3D image scaling is becoming more emphasized. We present the recommendations for the 3D scaling from the geometric analysis and propose a disparity-adaptive filter for anti-aliasing which could occur during the image scaling process.
In this paper, our effort to apply 3-D Virtual Reality system for stereoscopic visualization of mesh data on the web is briefly described. This study is an extension of our previous and on-going research efforts to develop an automatic grid generation program specialized for wing mesh, named as eGWing. The program is developed by using JAVA programming language, and it can be used either as an application program on a local computer or as an applet in the network environment. In this research advancing layer method(ALM) augmented by elliptic smoothing method is used for the structured grid generation. And to achieve a stereoscopic viewing capability, two graphic windows are used to render its own viewing image for the left and right eye respectively. These two windows are merged into one image using 3D monitor and the viewers can see the mesh data visualization results with stereoscopic depth effects by using polarizing glasses. In this paper three dimensional mesh data visualization with stereoscopic technique combined with 3D monitor is demonstrated, and the current achievement would be a good start-up for further development of low-cost high-quality stereoscopic mesh data visualization system which can be shared by many users through the web.

Stereoscopic conversion has been an important and challenging issue for many 3-D video applications. Usually, there are two different stereoscopic conversion approaches, i.e., image motion-based conversion that uses motion information and object-based conversion that partitions an image into moving or static foreground object(s) and background and then converts the foreground in a stereoscopic object. As well, since the input sequence is MPEG-1/2 compressed video, motion data stored in compressed bitstream are often unreliable and thus the image motion-based conversion might fail. To solve this problem, we present the utilization of key-motion that has the better accuracy of estimated or extracted motion information. To deal with diverse motion types, a transform space produced from motion vectors and color differences is introduced. A key-motion is determined from the transform space and its associated stereoscopic image is generated. Experimental results validate effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
This paper presents a 3D stereoscopic TIP (Tour Into Picture) for Korean classical paintings being composed of persons, boat, and landscape. Unlike conventional TIP methods providing 2D image or video, our proposed TIP can provide users with 3D stereoscopic contents. Navigating a picture with stereoscopic viewing can deliver more realistic and immersive perception. The method firstly makes input data being composed of foreground mask, background image, and depth map. The second step is to navigate the picture and to obtain rendered images by orthographic or perspective projection. Then, two depth enhancement schemes such as depth template and Laws depth are utilized in order to reduce a cardboard effect and thus to enhance 3D perceived depth of the foreground objects. In experiments, the proposed method was tested on 'Danopungjun' and 'Muyigido' that are famous paintings made in Chosun Dynasty. The stereoscopic animation was proved to deliver new 3D perception compared with 2D video.
In this article, we review the study trends of three-dimensional (3D) displays that can display stereoscopic images from the perspective of a display device. 3D display technology can be divided into light field, holographic, and volume displays. Light field display is a display that can reproduce the intensity and direction of light or 'ray' in each pixel. It can display stereoscopic images with less information than a holographic display and does not require coherence of the light source. Therefore, it is expected that it will be commercialized before the holographic display. Meanwhile, the holographic display creates a stereoscopic image by completely reproducing the wavefront of an image using diffraction in terms of wave characteristics of light. This technology is considered to be able to obtain the most complete stereoscopic image, and the digital holographic display using a spatial light modulator (SLM) is expected to be the ultimate stereoscopic display. However, the digital holographic display still experiences the problem of a narrow viewing angle due to the finite pixel pitch of the SLM. Therefore, various attempts have been made at solving this problem. Volumetric display is a technology that directly creates a stereoscopic image by forming a spatial pixel, which is known as a volumetric pixel, in a physical space, and has a significant advantage in that it can easily solve the problem of the viewing angle. This technology has already been tested for commercial purposes by several leading companies. In this paper, we will examine recent research trends regarding these 3D displays and near-eye display that is emerging as a significant application field of these technologies.

3D stereoscopic viewing of large scale imagery, such as aerial photography and satellite images, needs different parallaxes relative to the display scale. For example, when a viewer sees a stereoscopic image of aerial photography, the optimal parallax of its zoom-in image should be smaller than that of its zoom-out. Therefore, relative parallax adjustment according to the display scale is required. Merely adjusting the spacing between stereo images is not appropriate because the depths of the whole image are either exaggerated or reduced entirely. This paper focuses on the improving stereoscopic viewing with a single remote sensing image and a digital surface model (DSM). We present the parallax adjustment technique to maximize the 3D realistic effect and the visual comfort. For remote sensing data, DSM height value can be regarded as disparity. There are two possible kinds of methods to adjust the relative parallax with a single image performance. One is the DSM compression technique: the other is an adjustment of the distance between the original image and its stereo-mate. In our approach, we carried out a test to evaluate the optimal distance between a single remote sensing image and its stereo-mate, relative to the viewing scale. Several synthetic stereo-mates according to certain viewing scale were created using a parallel projection model and their anaglyphs were estimated visually. The occlusion of the synthetic stereo-mate was restored by the inpainting method using the fields of experts (FoE) model. With the experiments using QuickBird imagery, we could obtain stereoscopic images with optimized parallax at varied display scales.

As various 3D contents have been developed recently, number of users who use 3D glasses in the cinema or their house has increased. However, since a stereoscopic image causes visual fatigue, developers also advise children and pregnant against watching it for hours. In this paper, we proposed measurement of level of visual fatigue degree by analyzing histogram obtained from a disparity-map. We used binocular disparity approach which is a fundamental factor occurred by a stereoscopic image. This research can be used as an user discomfort improvement method by referring to a stereoscopic image producing and compensation. To obtain a disparity-map, our proposed method used a census algorithm which is suitable for real-time processing.

This paper discusses a method to efficiently remove the keystone distortion in images. The keystone distortion which generated during 2D image aquisition to realize 3D stereoscopic images is removed by the bilinear interpolation method. Usually, the keystone distortion in 2D images can remove by the optical equipment but the image processing is more effective than the optical equipment in consideration of efficiency or simplicity of the works. This method can be realized 3D stereoscopic image without the distortion.
