Purpose: This study examined the effect of wettability of gypsum materials and rubber impression material on the marginal fitness of zirconia copings. Methods: Three commercially available gypsum materials(Fugirock EP, Snow Rock, Tuff Rock) and three zirconia blocks(iJAM Emerald, LUXEN Smile block, ICE Zirkon transluzent) were studied. The zirconia copings were fabricated by using dental CAD/CAM system. Contact angles on the impression materials were measured with contact angle measuring device. Silicone replica method was used to measure the marginal fitness and cutting was performed on the bucco-lingual and mesio-distal sides. It were observed with a stereomicroscope at °ø40 magnification. The data were statistically analyzed with One-way ANOVA. Results: Mean values of contact angles were $58.3{\pm}0.7^{\circ}$ for Tuff Rock, $77.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}$ for Fugirock EP and $87.8{\pm}0.5^{\circ}$ for Snow Rock and the difference between them was statistically significant(p<0.05). The smallest values of marginal fitness for the JF groups were $30.7{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ for bucco-lingual direction, $29.3{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ for mesio-distal direction. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for marginal fitness(p<0.05). Conclusion: Tuff rock gypsum material had superior wettability to others. The mean marginal fitness of the Tuff rock gypsum material group were significantly better than other groups. Thus they can be also expected to show clinically satisfactory marginal fitness.
Poor marginal fidelity resulting in a large marginal gap increases plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation and dental caries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal fit of three different cervical finishing methods of prepared teeth. A stereomicroscope was used to measure the space between the margin of restoration and the finishing line of prepared tooth. The results were statistically analyzed using the ANOVA and Multiple Range Test(Tukey's HSD). The results were as follows : 1. There were no significant differences concerning the types of tooth and positon (P>0.05), whereas the differences were statistically significant in case of cervical finishing methods (P<0.05). 2. There were statistically significant differences between before and after cementation (P<0.05). 3. In comparison according to variable margins after cementation, the gap discrepancies were increased in $130^{\circ}$ shoulder margin, chamfer margin and $90^{\circ}$ shoulder margin in ascending order, and there were significant differences between $90^{\circ}$ shoulder margin and chamfer, $130^{\circ}$ shoulder margin 4. In comparison according to variable margins, the gap discrepancies were increased in chamfer margin, $130^{\circ}$ shoulder margin and $90^{\circ}$ shoulder margin in ascending order, and there were significant differences between $90^{\circ}$ shoulder margin and chamfer, $130^{\circ}$ shoulder margin. 5. This study demonstrated a better marginal fit with all-ceramic crowns fabricated on chamfer and $130^{\circ}$ shoulder margin compared with $90^{\circ}$ shoulder margin.
Objectives: The purpose of present study was to evaluate the internal adaptation of composite restorations using different adhesive systems. Materials and Methods: Typical class I cavities were prepared in 32 human third molars. The teeth were divided into the following four groups: 3-step etch-and-rinse, 2-step etch-and-rinse, 2-step self-etch and 1-step self-etch system were used. After the dentin adhesives were applied, composite resins were filled and light-cured in two layers. Then, silver nitrate solution was infiltrated, and all of the samples were scanned by micro-CT before and after thermo-mechanical load cycling. For each image, the length to which silver nitrate infiltrated, as a percentage of the whole pulpal floor length, was calculated (%SP). To evaluate the internal adaptation using conventional method, the samples were cut into 3 pieces by two sectioning at an interval of 1 mm in the middle of the cavity and they were dyed with Rhodamine-B. The cross sections of the specimens were examined by stereomicroscope. The lengths of the parts where actual leakage was shown were measured and calculated as a percentage of real leakage (%RP). The values for %SP and %RP were compared. Results: After thermo-mechanical loading, all specimens showed significantly increased %SP compared to before thermo-mechanical loading and 1-step self-etch system had the highest %SP (p < 0.05). There was a tendency for %SP and %RP to show similar microleakage percentage depending on its sectioning. Conclusions: After thermo-mechanical load cycling, there were differences in internal adaptation among the groups using different adhesive systems.
Objectives: It is known that bioactive materials interact with the dentin to undergo biomineralization. The exact role of moisture in this interaction is unknown. Here, we investigate the effects of dentin moisture conditions on the dislocation resistance of two bioactive root canal sealers (MTA Fillapex [Angelus Solucoes Odontologicas] and GuttaFlow BioSeal [Colténe/Whaledent AG]) at 3 weeks and 3 months after obturation. Materials and Methods: Mandibular premolars (n = 120) were prepared and randomly divided into 3 groups based on the dentin condition: group 1, dry dentin; group 2, moist dentin; group 3, wet dentin. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups for root canal filling: MTA Fillapex and GuttaFlow BioSeal. Dislocation resistance was evaluated by measuring the push-out bond strength at 3 weeks and 3 months. Failure modes were examined under a stereomicroscope. Data were statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test with a significance level of 5%. Results: Moist dentin resulted in higher bond strength values for both materials at both time points. This was significantly higher than wet and dry dentin for both the sealers at the 3 months (p < 0.05), while at 3 weeks it was significant only for GuttaFlow Bioseal. The different moisture conditions demonstrated similar trends in their effects on the dislocation resistance of the 2 root canal sealers. Conclusions: The dentin moisture conditions had a significant impact on its interaction with the bioactive materials tested. Maintaining moist dentin, but not dry or wet dentin, may be advantageous before the filling root canals with bioactive sealers.
The techniques for manipulation of various micro-tools were essential for particle isolation and chemical analysis of micro-size particles. This report described the detailed techniques for the preparation and handling of several micro-tools. Presence of uranium particles in smeared filter paper were identified by using the solid track detector. The uranium particles were isolated using the micro-tools under the stereomicroscope and then transferred to the filament of TIMS for the determination of isotope ratios.
The purpose of this study was to compare the apical sealing effect of Microseal obturation technique with lateral condensation technique in 26 recently extracted single rooted teeth. The root canals were instrumented using step-back technique and obturated with laterally condensed gutta-percha or Microseal. Teeth were suspended in methylene blue dye for 2 days and then longitudinary splited. The apical microleakage and the adaptability of gutta-percha to the root canal wall were examined under a stereomicroscope at ${\times}20$ magnification. The results were as follows: 1. The mean leakage was 1.38${\pm}$1.18 mm for laterally condensed gutta-percha group, and 0.71${\pm}$0.57 mm for Microseal gutta-percha group. But there was no statistical difference between two groups. 2. In Microseal gutta-percha group, they showed no gap between the master cone and Microseal gutta-percha, and showed homogeneous mass. 3. In contrast, laterally condensed gutta-percha group showed some gaps not only between gutta-percha cones, but also between gutta-percha cones and the canal walls, and the gaps were filled with some sealer. And also this group showed some amout of sealer on the root canal walls, Within the limits of the results of this experiment, Microseal gutta-percha obturation technique demonstrated relatively favorable apical sealing effect and shorter obturation time. Thus, it is thought that this obturation technique is a acceptable method for clinical use but further studies on this matter should be conducted.
The effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP) and electrical stimulation of the tooth on the intradental nerve activtiy (INA) was investigated in anesthetized cats. The INA was recorded from single pulp nerve units dissected from the inferior alveolar nerve under stereomicroscope. The INA elicited by 3 minute application of 4M NaCl in deep dentinal cavity was compared before and after stimulation at 10 minute intervals. The magnitude of INA was calculated as the total number of nerve impulses produced in given period, and the changes of INA are expressed as % of control INA. The results obtained were as follows. 1. 16 single pulp nerve units were classified as 14 $A{\delta}$-fibers (3.4~19.4m/sec) and 2-fibers (1.5~1.7m/sec) according to the conduction velocity. 2. 4M NaCl evoked an irregular bursts of spikes which continued until washing out. Isotonic saline did not affect INA to subsequent applications of the hypertonic NaCl solution (P>0.05). 3. Local application of CGRP ($200{\mu}g$/ml) in deep dentinal cavity reduced the INA induced by 4M NaCl in $A{\delta}$-fiber units (P<0.01) and some units of those responded to CGRP during application. 4. Local application of SP ($100{\mu}g$/ml) in deep dentinal cavity reduced the INA induced by 4M NaCl in AS-fiber units (p<0.05), but increased the INA in C-fiber unit coincided with large reduction of the INA of $A{\delta}$-fiber units. 5. Monopolar electrical stimulation applied to the crown at intensities high enough to excite C-fibers (12V, 5ms, 10Hz, 10~30min) decreased the INA in $A{\delta}$-fiber units (P<0.01) and systemic pretreatment with phenoxybenzamine (3mg/kg, i.v.) enhanced this inhibitory effect (P<0.01). On the contrary, electrical stimulation increased the INA in C-fiber unit.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between hybrid layer thickness and bond strength using confocal laser scanning microscope and microtensile bond strength test of two adhesive systems. The dentin surface of human molars. sectioned to remove the enamel from the occlusal surface. Either Scotchbond Multi-Purpose(3M Dental Product, St. Paul, MN, U.S.A) or Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray, Osaka, Japan) was bonded to the surface. and covered with resin-composite. The resin-bonded teeth were serially sliced perpendicular to the adhesive interface to measure the hybrid layer thickness by confocal laser scanning microscope. The specimen were trimmed to give a bonded cross-sectional surface area of $1\textrm{mm}^2$, then the micro-tensile bone test was performed at a cross head speed of 1.0 mm/min. All fractured surfaces were also observed by stereomicroscope. There was no significant differences in bond strengths the materials(p>0.05). However. the hybrid layers of three-step dentin adhesive system, SM, had significantly thicker than self-etching adhesive system. CS(p<0.05). Pearson's correlation coefficient showed no correlation between hybrid layer thickness and bond strengths(p>0.05). Bond strengths of dentin adhesive systems were not dependent on the thickness of hybrid layer.
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of restorative materials on the marginal leakage of wedge-shaped class V cavity. The study was performed in vitro in 25 defect-free permanent, extracted teeth. Wedge-shaped class V cavities were prepared and then the teeth were randomly selected and restored according to the following. Group A : restoration with Tetric Ceram(composite resin) Group B : restoration with Tetric flow(flowable resin) Group C : restoration with Compoglass after acid etching(compomer) Group D : restoration with Compoglass(compomer) Group E : restoration with Fuji II LC improved(resin-modified GIC) After thermocycling, the specimens were immersed in 5% basic fuchsin solution for 6 hours and sectioned longitudinally through the center of the restoration. The degree of marginal leakage was measured as the extent of dye penetration under the stereomicroscope. The data were analysed using one-way ANOVA. When significant differences found, multiple comparisons were made using Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results were as follows: 1. The occlusal margins of all groups except for Fuji II LC improved showed lesser leakage than gingival margins and there was statistically significant difference(p<0.05). 2. At the occlusal margins, group A, B showed same marginal leakage scores, and others were decreased as group C, D, E in that order. There were statistically significant difference between group A, Band group D, E, group C and group E(p<0.05). 3. At the gingival margins, group B, C showed same marginal leakage scores, and others were decreased as group A, D, E in that order. But there was statistically significant difference between group B, C and group E(p<0.05). 4. In the Compoglass restoration, acid-etching technique was beneficial for marginal sealing ability at all of margins. But there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). In the restorations for wedge-shaped class V cavities, resin restoration with acid etching technique is recommended.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of compomers. In this in vitro study, class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of thirty extracted human premolars and molars on cementum cervical margin. The experimental teeth were randomly divided into five groups of six samples (12 surfaces) each, Group 1 : Dyract AP, Group 2 : F2000 compomer(non-etch), Group 3 : F2000 compomer(etch), Group 4 : Elan, Group 5 : Compoglass. The bonding agents and compomer were applied for each group following the manufacturer's instructions. After 500 thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, the 30 teeth were placed 1% methylene blue dye for 24 hours then rinsed with tab water. The specimens were embedded in clear resin, then sectioned buccolingually through the center of the restoration with a low speed diamond saw. The dye penetration on each of the specimen was observed with a stereomicroscope. The results of study were statistically analyzed using the Student-Newmann-Kaul' s Test. The results were obtained as follows. 1. All compomer restoration systems did not completely prevent marginal leakage. 2. In enamel margin, F2000 compomer(etch) group showed lower leakage value than other systems. Elan and Compoglass groups showed lower leakage value than Dyract AP and F2000 compomer(non-etch) groups (p<0.05). 3. In cementum margin, F2000 compomer(etch) and F2000 compomer (non-etch) groups showed lower leakage value than other systems. Dyract AP and Elan groups showed lower leakage value than Compoglass group (p<0.05).
