In this paper, the algorithm to extract the height of flat-rooftop structures in stereo aerial image is suggested with an assumption that location, orientation, focal length, and field of view of a camera are known. It can be adapted to stereo aerial or satellite images. For performing feature-based stereo matching, the line segments suitable to describe the shape of general buildings are chosen as the feature. This paper is composed of three categories;the first step is to extract edges of structures with the polygon extraction algorithm which utilizes the edge following method, the second step is to perform the line segment matching with the camera information, and the last step is to calculate the location of each matched line and to estimate heights. The stereo images used in experiments are not real but synthetic ones. The experiment shows good results.
Since 1988, pine wilt disease has spread over rapidly in Korea. It is not easy to detect the damaged pine trees by pine wilt disease from conventional remote sensing skills. Thus, many possibilities were investigated to detect the damaged pines using various kinds of remote sensing data including high spatial resolution satellite image of 2000/2003 IKONOS and 2005 QuickBird, aerial photos, and digital airborne data, too. Time series of B&W aerial photos at the scale of 1:6,000 were used to validate the results. A local maximum filtering was adapted to determine whether the damaged pines could be detected or not at the tree level from high resolution satellite images, and to locate the damaged trees. Several enhancement methods such as NDVI and image transformations were examined to find out the optimal detection method. Considering the mean crown radius of pine trees, local maximum filter with 3 pixels in radius was adapted to detect the damaged trees on IKONOS image. CIR images of 50 cm resolution were taken by PKNU-3(REDLAKE MS4000) sensor. The simulated CIR images with resolutions of 1 m, 2 m, and 4 m were generated to test the possibility of tree detection both in a stereo and a single mode. In conclusion, in order to detect the pine tree damaged by pine wilt disease at a tree level from satellite image, a spatial resolution might be less than 1 m in a single mode and/or 1 m in a stereo mode.
In this paper, we are concerned with a 3D line segment extraction method by area-based stereo matching technique. The main idea is based on line fitting of elevation data on 2D line coordinates of ortho-image. Elevation data and ortho-image can be obtained by well-known area-based stereo matching technique. In order to use elevation in line fitting, the elevation itself should be reliable. To measure the reliability of elevation, in this paper, we employ the concept of self-consistency. We test the effectiveness of the proposed method with a quantitative accuracy analysis using synthetic images generated from Avenches data set of Ascona aerial images. Experimental results indicate that our method generates 3D line segments almost 7.5 times more accurate than raw elevations obtained by area-based method.

Stereo vision is useful to obtain three dimensional depth information from two images taken from different view points. In this paper, we reduce searching area for correspondence by using the intra-scanline constraint, and utilize the inter-scanline constraint and the property of disparity continuity among the neighboring pixels for relaxation. Nodes with 3-D stucture are located on the axes of two views, and have matching possibility of correspondent pixels of two images. A matching is accepted if a node at the intersection of the disparity axes has the greatest matching possibility. Otherwise, the matching possibility of the node is updated by relaxation with the cooperation of neighboring nodes. Further relaxation with competition of two views is applied to a matching possibility of randomly selected node. The consensus of two views increases the confidence of matching, and removes a blurring phenomenon on the discontinuity of object. This approach has been tested with various types of image such as random dot stereogram and aerial image, and the experimental results show good matching performance.

In a different way of satellite image or aerial photo, the image acquired by terrestrial photogrammetry has to go through complicated management according to the desired precision and analysis range. In this study, digital surface model and ortho image for cultural asset, terrestrial structures, were made by reflectorless total station in order to increase the application of single photo, and that was analyzed and compared with the method using stereo image. Single photo is expected to be utilized as the measuring method for drawing cultural assets or examining the stability of slope in which high precision doesn't need by performing the various geometric and visual analysis using ortho image made by excluding the difficulties of acquisition and plotting of stereo image.
Ever since high resolution satellites were launched, high-resolution satellite images have been utilized in many areas. This paper proposed methods of generating simulated satellite image using DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and digital image such as aerial photograph. There are two methods proposed in the paper: one is Direct-Indirect method and the other Indirect-Indirect, method. It is assumed that satellite attitude is not changing and perspective center is moving in the direction of flight while image is captured. The proposed methods were implemented with aerial photograph, DEM data, arbitrary orbit parameters and attitude parameters of high resolution satellite image under generation. Furthermore, for the stereo viewing, different orientation parameters and perspective center were tested for generating simulated satellite image. In addition, the quality and accuracy of the simulated satellite image generated by the proposed methods were analyzed.
There has been much advancement in the field of aerial cameras for geographical features with the help of drones, image processing power and computer aided optical programs. In this study, we propose a new optical lens design technique which minimizes the amount of ‘the third order Seidel aberration’ for enhancing MTF. In addition, we suggest a new optical lens design which stabilizes the mass-production yield through R.S.M and has robustness secure through the Taguchi method. Eventually, the image processing algorithm of stereo matching is implemented in order to evaluate whether the proposed lens design result meets adequate specifications for the use of dual aerial photographs or not. This paper provides good guidance for the optical design by development of experiments.
As part of an effort to leap smart cadastre system by doing rearrangement of various mismatches in the land register, the cadastre renovation project is being recently conducted. In response to this demand, this paper proposes an image-based rapid parcel boundary demarcation plan using the high resolution aerial image with a GSD (Ground Sample Distance) of 5cm that matches to real ground boundary situation in residential area. To review the feasibility and accuracy of this proposed methodology, we compared the accuracy of parcel boundary point and parcel area extracted from the digital stereo plotting on the basis of results of cadastral boundary surveying and land register over the selected two test areas. The comparative accuracy result of all boundary points by digital stereo plotting is satisfied with accuracy requirement according to the criteria of the enforcement regulation of cadastral surveying, whereas it exceeded allowable error of ${\pm}0.07m$, more strictly specified in the Special Act on Cadastral Renovation. And about 20% of the total 70 parcels extracted by digital plotting are out of area tolerance in Jecheon study area, and 10% of the total 19 parcels in Suwon study area. The parcels exceeding accuracy limit are mostly due to the occlusion caused by building roof or eaves, and the obstacles such as trees existing on the boundary. Furthermore, an object identification is impossible in image because of vague boundary reference in case of nonexistence of man-made structures or natural features. Therefore, the utilization of boundary identification stickers is recommended as a solution for these types of land parcel.
In this paper, we present how to create a point cloud for a target area using multiple unmanned aerial vehicle images and to remove the gaps and overlapping points between datasets. For this purpose, first, IBA (Incremental Bundle Adjustment) technique was applied to correct the position and attitude of UAV platform. We generate a point cloud by using MDR (Multi-Dimensional Relaxation) matching technique. Next, we register point clouds based on observation vectors between stereo images by doing this we remove gaps between point clouds which are generated from different stereo pairs. Finally, we applied an occupancy grids based integration algorithm to remove duplicated points to create an integrated point cloud. The experiments were performed using UAV images, and our experiments show that it is possible to remove gaps and duplicate points between point clouds generated from different stereo pairs.

In this study, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were constructed from color images, grayscale images and each bands (Red, Green, Blue) of color image, and the accuracies of each DEMs were evaluated, And then, correlation coefficients between left and right images of each stereopairs were analyzed. The DEM can be constructed conventionally from the digital map and stereopair images using image matching. The image matching requires stereo satellite images or aerial photographs. In case of rotor aerial photographs, these are to be scanned in 3 bands (Red, Green, Blue). For this study, 5 types of images were acquired; color, grayscale, RED band, GREEN band, and BLUE band image. DEMs were constructed from 5 types of stereopair images and evaluated using elevation points of digital maps. In order to analyze the cause of various accuracies of each DEMs, the similarity between left and right images of each stereopairs were analyzed. Consequently, the accuracy of the DEM constructed from RED band images of color aerial photograph were proved best.
