In stereo vision, camera modeling is very important because the accuracy of the three dimensional locations depends considerably on it. In the existing stereo camera models, two camera planes are located in the same plane or on the optical axis. These camera models cannot be used in the active vision system where it is necessary to obtain two stereo images simultaneously. In this paper, we propose four kinds of stereo camera models for active stereo vision system where focal lengths of the two cameras are different and each camera is able to rotate independently. A single closed form solution is obtained for all models. The influence of the stereo camera model to the field of view, occlusion, and search area used for matching is shown in this paper. And errors due to inaccurate focal length are analyzed and simulation results are shown. It is expected that the three dimensional locations of objects are determined in real time by applying proposed stereo camera models to the active stereo vision system, such as a mobile robot.

The stereo geometry establishment based on the precise sensor modeling is prerequisite for accurate stereo data processing. Ground control points are generally required for the accurate sensor modeling though it is not possible over the area where the accessibility is limited or reference data is not available. For the areas, the relative orientation should be carried out to improve the geometric consistency between the stereo data though it does not improve the absolute positional accuracy. The relative orientation requires conjugate points that are well distributed over the entire image region. Therefore the automatic conjugate point extraction is required because the manual operation is labor-intensive. In this study, we applied the method consisting of the key point extraction, the search space minimization based on the epipolar line, and the rigorous outlier detection based on the RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) bias compensation modeling. We tested different parameters of window sizes for Kompsat-2 across track stereo data and analyzed the RPCs precision after the bias compensation for the cases whether the epipolar line information is used or not. The experimental results showed that matching outliers were inevitable for the different matching parameterization but they were successfully detected and removed with the rigorous method for sub-pixel level of stereo RPCs precision.
We carried out accuracy assessment for DEM extraction from the KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images over Daejeon and Nonsan in Korea. DEM generation divided into two parts. One is camera modeling and the other stereo matching. We used Orun & Natarajan's(1994) model and Gupta & Hartley's(1997) model in the camera modeling step and checked the possibility using Orun & Natarajan and Gupta & Hartley's models in EOC stereo pairs. For stereo matching, we used an algorithms developed in-house for SPOT images and showed that this algorithm could work with EOC images. Using these algorithms, DEMs were successfully generated from EOC images. The comparison of DEM from EOC Images with a DEM from SPOT Images showed that EOC could be used for high-accuracy DEM generation.

This paper proposes a recovering technique of the elevation map by stereo modeling of the aerial image sequence which is transformed based on the aircraft situation. The area-based stereo matching method is simulated and the various parameters are experimentally chosen. In a depth extraction step, the depth is determined by solving the vector equation. The equation is suitable for stereo modeling of aerial images which do not satisfy the epipolar constraint. Also, the performance of the conventional feature-based matching scheme is compared. Finally, techniques analyzing the accuracy of the recovered elevation map (REM) are described. The analysis includes the error estimation for both height and contour lines, where the accuracy is based on the measurements of deviations from the estimates obtained manually. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed technique.

For developing an Automation equipment in construction, it is a key issue to develop 3D modeling technology which can be used for automatically recognizing environmental objects. Recently, for the development of "Intelligent Excavating System(IES), a research developing the real-time 3D terrain modeling technology has been implemented from 2006 in Korea and a stereo vision system is selected as the optimum technology. However, as a result of performance tests implemented in various earth moving environment, the 3D images obtained by stereo vision included considerable noise. Therefore, in this study, for getting rid of the noise which is necessarily generated in stereo image matching, the noise elimination algorithm of stereo-vision images for 3D terrain modeling was developed. The consequence of this study is expected to be applicable in developing an automation equipments which are used in field environment.
The purpose of this paper is to extract DEM (Digital Elevation Model) using KOMPSAT images. DEM extraction consists of three parts. First part is the modeling of satellite position and attitude, second part is the matching of two images to find corresponding points of them and third part is to calculate the elevation of each point by using the result of the first and second part. The position and attitude modeling of satellite is processed by using GCPs. Area based matching method is used to find the corresponding points between the stereo satellite images. The elevation of each point is calculated using the exterior orientation information obtained from sensor modeling and the disparity from the stereo matching. In experiment, the KOMPSAT images, 2592$\times$2796 panchromatic images are used to extract DEM. The experiment result show the DEM using KOMPSAT images.
Using stereo images with ephemeris data from the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-1 electro-optical camera (KOMPSAT-1 EOC), we performed geometric modeling for three-dimensional (3-D) positioning and evaluated its accuracy. In the geometric modeling procedures, we used ephemeris data included in the image header file to calculate the orbital parameters, sensor attitudes, and satellite position. An inconsistency between the time information of the ephemeris data and that of the center of the image frame was found, which caused a significant offset in satellite position. This time inconsistency was successfully adjusted. We modeled the actual satellite positions of the left and right images using only two ground control points and then achieved 3-D positioning using the KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images. The results show that the positioning accuracy was about 12-17 m root mean square error (RMSE) when 6.6 m resolution EOC stereo images were used along with the ephemeris data and only two ground control points (GCPs). If more accurate ephemeris data are provided in the near future, then a more accurate 3-D positioning will also be realized using only the EOC stereo images with ephemeris data and without the need for any GCPs.
In general, stereo images are widely used to remote sensing or photogrametric applications for the purpose of image understanding and feature extraction or cognition. However, the most cases of these stereo-based application deal with 2-D satellite images or the airborne photos so that its main targets are generation of small-scaled or large-scaled DEM(Digital Elevation Model) or DSM(Digital Surface Model), in the 2.5-D. Contrast to these previous approaches, the scope of this study is to investigate 3-D stereo processing and visualization of true geo-referenced 3-D features based on anaglyph technique, and the aim is at the prototype development for stereo visualization system of complex typed 3-D GIS features. As for complex typed 3-D features, the various kinds of urban landscape components are taken into account with their geometric characteristics and attributes. The main functions in this prototype are composed of 3-D feature authoring and modeling along with database schema, stereo matching, and volumetric visualization. Using these functions, several technical aspects for migration into actual 3-D GIS application are provided with experiment results. It is concluded that this result will contribute to more specialized and realistic applications by linking 3-D graphics with geo-spatial information.

In this paper, a method for recognizing 3-D objects using the 3-D Hough transform and the robust stereo vision is studied. A 3-D object is recognized through two steps; modeling step and matching step. In modeling step, features of the object are extracted by analyzing the IGES file. In matching step, the values of the sensed image are compared with those of the IGES file which is assumed to location and orientation in the 3-D Hough transform domain. Since we use the 3-D Hough transform domain of the input image directly, the sensitivity to the noise and the high computational complexity could be significantly allcv~ated. Also, the cost efficiency is improved using the robust stereo vision for obtaining depth map image which is needed for 3-D Hough transform. In order lo verify the proposed method, real telephone model is recognized. Thc results of the location and orientation of the model are presented.
As the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-I (KOMPSAT-1) satellite can roll tilt up to $\pm$45$^{\circ}$, we have analyzed some KOMPSAT-1 EOC images taken at different tilt angles for this study. The required ground coordinates for bundle adjustment and geometric accuracy are obtained from the digital map produced by the National Geography Institution, at a scale of 1:5,000. Followings are the steps taken for the tilting angle of KOMPSAT-1 to be present in the evaluation of geometric accuracy of each different stereo image data: Firstly, as the tilting angle is different in each image, the characteristic of satellite dynamic must be determined by the sensor modeling. Then the best sensor modeling equation should be determined. The result of this research, the difference between the RMSE values of individual stereo images is mainly due to quality of image and ground coordinates instead of tilt angle. The bundle adjustment using three KOMPSAT-1 stereo pairs, first degree of polynomials for modeling the satellite position, were sufficient.
