As we perceive the world as 3-dimensional through our two eyes, we can extract 3-dimensional information from stereo images obtained from two or more cameras. Since stereo images have a large amount of data, with recent advances in digital video coding technology, efficient compression algorithms have been developed for stereo images. In order to compress stereo images and to obtain 3-D information such as depth, we find disparity vectors by using disparity estimation algorithm generally utilizing pixel differences between stereo pairs. However, it is not unusual to have stereo images having different intensity values for several reasons, such as incorrect control of the iris of each camera, disagreement of the foci of two cameras, orientation, position, and different characteristics of CCD (charge-coupled device) cameras, and so on. The intensity differences of stereo pairs often cause undesirable problems such as incorrect disparity vectors and consequent low coding efficiency. By compensating intensity differences between left and right images, we can obtain higher coding efficiency and hopefully reduce the perceptual burden of brain to combine different information incoming from two eyes. We propose several methods of intensity compensation such as local intensity compensation, global intensity compensation, and hierarchical intensity compensation as very simple and efficient preprocessing tool. Experimental results show that the proposed algerian provides significant improvement in coding efficiency.

In this paper, we propose a real-time stereoscopic display system based on H.264/AVC. We initially acquire stereo-view images from stereo web-cam using OpenCV library. The captured images are converted to YUV 4:2:0 format as a preprocess. The input files are encoded by stereo-encoder, which has a proposed estimation structure, with more than 30 fps. The encoded bitstream are decoded by stereo-decoder reconstructing left and right images. The reconstructed stereo images are postprocessed by stereoscopic image synthesis technique to offer users more realistic images with 3D effect. Experimental results show that the proposed system has better encoding efficiency compared with using a conventional stereo CODEC(coder and decoder) and operates with real-time processing and low complexity suitable for an application with a mobile environment.
This paper presents to generate 3D building model using estimation of rooftop surface after 3D line segment extraction using hybrid stereo matching techniques in terms of the co-operation of area-based stereo and feature-based stereo. we first performed a junction extraction from 3D line segment data which was obtained by stereo images, and finally generated building's reliable rooftop surface model using LSE(Least Square Error) method after creating surfaces by grouped and fixed junction points. we generated synthetic images for experimentation by photo-realistic simulation on Avenches data set of Ascona aerial images.
In this paper, we propose the method of stereo images composition using adaptive dense disparity estimation. For the correct composition of stereo image and 3D virtual object, we need correct marker position and depth information. The existing algorithms use position information of markers in stereo images for calculating depth of calibration object. But this depth information may be wrong in case of inaccurate marker tracking. Moreover in occlusion region, we can't know depth of 3D object, so we can't composite stereo images and 3D virtual object. In these reasons, the proposed algorithm uses adaptive dense disparity estimation for calculation of depth. The adaptive dense disparity estimation is the algorithm that use pixel-based disparity estimation and the search range is limited around calibration object.

In this paper, we propose a three dimensional distance measurement method for a stereo system by using web cams. Using a parallel stereo system, a robot gets two images from each webcam and equalize brightness of both images. And we suggest an image processing method such as labeling, isolating an object from background and finding center of an object. We also propose a method of calculating the focal distance by using least square algorithm based on triangulation and we can reduce calculation error by this method. From experimental results, we show that the proposed method can be effective for 3D distance measurement.
Three dimensional shape measurement techniques are widely needed in industries for product quality monitoring and control. X-ray imaging method is a promising technology to achieve three-dimensional Information, both the surface and inner structure of an object, since it can overcome the limitations of conventional visual or optical methods such as an occlusion problem or surface reflection properties. In this paper, we propose three dimensional volume reconstruction method based on x-ray stereo imaging technology. Here, the stereo images of an object from two different views are taken by changing the object pose rather than moving imaging plane as in conventional stereo vision method. We propose a series of image processing techniques to extract the features efficiently from x-ray images, where the occluded features in case of normal camera vision could be found ...
In 1799, Korea has become a country that holds Earth observation satellite in orbit as they had succeeded in the launch of KOPMSAT-1, the first Korean Earth observation satellite for the practical purpose. For the wide application of the satellite imagery, various application techniques are required, and topographic mapping is essential technique for the application in various fields. Moreover, considering that the main mission of the KOMPSAT-1 is to provide the satellite imagery for the mapping of Korean peninsula, the topographic mapping using KOMPSAT-1 EOC imagery is very significant. In this paper, we showed the possibility of digital plotting using KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images to produce topographic map. For the purpose, we implemented experimental stereo plotting using digital photogrammetric workstation and analyzed the procedure. As a result of this paper, we showed that some elements consist in 1:25,000 scale map can be plotted from KOMPSAT-1 Stereo images.
Using stereo images with ephemeris data from the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-1 electro-optical camera (KOMPSAT-1 EOC), we performed geometric modeling for three-dimensional (3-D) positioning and evaluated its accuracy. In the geometric modeling procedures, we used ephemeris data included in the image header file to calculate the orbital parameters, sensor attitudes, and satellite position. An inconsistency between the time information of the ephemeris data and that of the center of the image frame was found, which caused a significant offset in satellite position. This time inconsistency was successfully adjusted. We modeled the actual satellite positions of the left and right images using only two ground control points and then achieved 3-D positioning using the KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images. The results show that the positioning accuracy was about 12-17 m root mean square error (RMSE) when 6.6 m resolution EOC stereo images were used along with the ephemeris data and only two ground control points (GCPs). If more accurate ephemeris data are provided in the near future, then a more accurate 3-D positioning will also be realized using only the EOC stereo images with ephemeris data and without the need for any GCPs.

In order to extract 3-dimensional information from 2-D image, stereo images are prerequisite. Moreover, for the measurement of moving objects, the synchronized sequential stereo images have to be captured and image matching should be implemented for determining the location of moving objects. In this research, a simple method computing 3-dimensional coordinates from sequential images of moving objects was implemented. The sequential stereo images were captured by a video camera with a beam splitter. Once video images were digitalized by frame grabber, the interest points were extracted and matched in each stereo image, and the coordinates of center of them are calculated using weighted average method. Then, 3-dimensional coordinates of moving objects were computed by DLT algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a method which infers an accurate disparity map for radiometrically varying stereo images. For this end, firstly, we transform the input color images to the log-chromaticity color space from which a linear relationship can be established during constructing a joint pdf between input stereo images. Based on this linear property, we present a new stereo matching cost by combining weighted mutual information and the SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) descriptor with segment-based plane-fitting constraints to robustly find correspondences for stereo image pairs which undergo radiometric variations. Experimental results show that our method outperforms previous methods and produces accurate disparity maps even for stereo images with severe radiometric differences.
