  • In this paper, we propose a new binocular stereo correspondence method by maximizing a fitness formulated by integrating two constraints of edge similarity and disparity smoothness simultaneously. The proposed stereopsis focusing to measure distances to leading vehicles on roads uses intensity gradients as matching attribute. In contrast to the previous work of area-based stereo matching, in which matching unit is a pixel, the matching unit of the proposed method becomes an area itself which is obtained by selecting a series of pixels enclosed by two pixels on the left and right boundaries of an object. This approach allows us to cope with real-time processing and to avoid window size selection problems arising from conventional area-based stereo.

  • This paper presents a stereo camera system that provides a Pair of stereo images using a Biprism. The equivalent of a stereo Pair of images is formed as the left and right halves of a single CCD image. The system is therefore cheap and extremely easy to calibrate since it requires only one CCD camera. An additional advantage of the geometrical set-up is that corresponding features lie on the same scanline automatically, The single camera and Biprism have led to a simple stereo system for which correspondence is very easy and which is accurate for nearby objects in a small field of view. Since we use only a single lens, calibration of the system is greatly simplified. Given the parameters in the Biprism-stereo camera system, we can reconstruct the 3-D structure using only the disparity between the corresponding points.

  • In this paper, we develop a registration method to eliminate the geometric inconsistency between the stereo-images and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data obtained by an airborne multisensor system. This method consists of three steps: registration primitive extraction, correspondence establishment, and exterior orientation parameter (EOP) adjustment. As the primitives, we employ object points and linked edges from the stereo-images and planar patches and intersection edges from the LIDAR data. After extracting these primitives, we establish the correspondence between them, being classified into vertical and horizontal groups. These corresponding pairs are simultaneously incorporated as stochastic constraints into aerial triangulation based on the bundle block adjustment. Finally, the EOPs of the images are adjusted to minimize the inconsistency. The results from the application of our method to real data demonstrate that the inconsistency between both data sets is significantly reduced from the range of 0.5 m to 2 m to less than 0.05 m. Hence, the results show that the proposed method is useful for the data fusion of aerial images and LIDAR data.

  • The important requirements for stereo video retargeting are threefold: keeping temporal coherence, preventing depth distortion, and minimizing shape distortions of the retargeted video. To meet these requirements, the left and right video sequences are divided into groups of frames (GoFs), where the GoF is a basic unit for the seam carving and we assign a set of fixed seams for all frames within the GoF. To determine the fixed seams for each GoF, we need to find the GoF boundary in the video first. Then, the representative frame for each GoF is generated by considering the spatial saliency and temporal coherence. Also, the confidence of the stereoscopic correspondence between the left and right frames is considered to prevent depth distortion.

  • This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) head pose estimation algorithm using the stereo image. Given a pair of stereo image, we automatically extract several important facial feature points using the disparity map, the gabor filter and the canny edge detector. To detect the facial feature region , we propose a region dividing method using the disparity map. On the indoor head & shoulder stereo image, a face region has a larger disparity than a background. So we separate a face region from a background by a divergence of disparity. To estimate 3D head pose, we propose a 2D-3D Error Compensated-SVD (EC-SVD) algorithm. We estimate the 3D coordinates of the facial features using the correspondence of a stereo image. We can estimate the head pose of an input image using Error Compensated-SVD (EC-SVD) method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of estimating pose accurately.

  • This paper presents a simple algorithm to obtain three dimensional information of an object. In the preprocessing of the stereo matching, feature point informations of stero image must be less sensitive to noise and well liked the correspondance problem. This paper described a simple technique of struture feature extraction of 3-D object and used edge-end point expanding method for unconnected line instade of Hough transform. The feature such as corner point and their angles are used for matching problem. The experimental results show that the described algorithm is a useful method for stereo correspondence problem.

  • Muilti-dimensional feature vector matching algorithm uses multiple features such as intensity, gradient, variance, first or second derivative of a pixel to find correspondence pixels in stereo images. In this paper, we proposed a new method for adjusting automatically the weight of feature in multi-dimensional feature vector matching considering sharpeness of a pixel in feature vector distance curve. The sharpeness consists of minimum and maximum vector distances of a small window mask. In the experiment we used IKONOS satellite stereo imagery and obtained accurate matching results comparable to the manual weight-adjusting method.

  • The correspondence problem for stereo image matching plays an important role in expanding view points as multi view video applications become more popular. The conventional disparity estimation algorithms have limitation to find exact disparities because they consider not image features but similiar intensity points. Thus we propose an efficient disparity estimation algorithm considering features of stereo image pairs. As simulation results, our proposed method confirms better intermediate views than the existing block-matching methods.

  • We present fast stereo matching algorithm using edge projection. Traditional stereo matching algorithm uses 2D template for the search of corresponding point thus it requires huge the computational cost. In this paper, we reduce the 2D search problem into 1D using edge projection along vertical and horizontal direction inside the region of interest. Also, by accumulation of edge projection along vertical and horizontal direction, the edge projection within the region of interest could simply be obtained by just subtracting two values. Experimental results show that matching algorithm using edge projection also gives comparable discriminating power compared to that of using intensity.
