  • In this paper, we propose a new stereoscopic video coding approach for heterogeneous consumer devices by exploiting the concept of spatio-temporal scalability. The proposed method uses MPEG-2 standard for coding the left or main sequence and an enhanced compatible coding scheme for predicting the P- and B-type of frames of the right or auxiliary sequence. The enhanced compatible coding scheme predicts matching block by interpolating both two forward and backward motion predicted macroblocks and disparity predicted macroblock. To provide flexible stereo video service, we define both a temporally scalable layer and a spatially scalable layer for each eye-view. The experimental results show the efficiency of proposed coding scheme by comparison with already known methods and the advantages of disparity estimation in terms of scalability overhead. According to the experimental results, we expect the proposed functionalities will play a key role in establishing highly flexible stereo video service for ubiquitous computing environment where devices and network connections are heterogeneous.

  • In this paper, a real-time multiview video coding system using fast disparity estimation is proposed. In the multiview encoder, adaptive disparity-motion estimation (DME) for an effective 3-dimensional (3D) processing are proposed. That is, by adaptively predicting the mutual correlation between stereo images in the key-frame using the proposed algorithm, the bandwidth of stereo input images can be compressed to the level of a conventional 2D image and a predicted image also can be effectively reconstructed using a reference image and adaptive disparity vectors. Also, in multiview decoder, intermediate view reconstruction (IVR) using adaptive disparity search algorithm (DSA) for real-time multiview video processing is proposed. The proposed IVR can reduce a processing time of disparity estimation by selecting adaptively disparity search range. Accordingly, the proposed multiview video coding system is able to increase the efficiency of the coding rate and improve the resolution.

  • MPEG audio uses the masking effect, high frequency component synthesis based on spectral band replication, and channel expansion based on parametric stereo for efficient compression of audio signals. In this paper, we present an overview of the state-of-the-art channel expansion technology in MPEG audio. We also present technical overviews and application examples to broadcasting services for HE-AAC v.2, MPEG Surround, spatial audio object coding (SAOC), and unified speech and audio coding (USAC) which are MPEG audio codecs based on the channel expansion technology.

  • Parametric stereo(PS) audio coding is a specific version of spatial audio coding. In this paper, the problem due to the conventional synthesis of phase differences. In the conventional upmix matrix, phase differences are synthesized not only on downmix signal but also ambient signal, which violates the assumption that the ambient signals are anti-phased. Deterioration due to the phase synthesis is analyzed, especially, for low interchannel correlation. To solve this problem, new upmix matrix is proposed, which synthesizes phase differences only on downmix signal. The performance of the proposed upmix matrix is verified by the subjective listening tests.

  • In stereo-view system, variations of target camera position or lighting conditions cause discrepancies on the luminance and chrominance components of stereo views. These discrepancies lead to inaccurate frame view prediction and low quality of 3 D video coding. In this paper, an efficient histogram interval calibration method is proposed for stereo-view coding, so as to compensate for the luminance component of target view. First the proposed method is analyzed by the histogram of the target image frame. Then, it divide two sections of histogram of that frame to correct the color discrepancies. Secondly, each section of the target frame is corrected the luminance component by identify the maximum matching region between the reference frame and the target frame. We have verified our proposed histogram matching method in comparison with the other color correction ones. Experimental results show that it can correct better luminance calibration results of PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and has less computation time.

  • Stereoscopic images consist of the left image and the right image. Thus, stereoscopic images have much amounts of data than single image. Then an efficient image compression technique is needed, the DPCM-based predicted coding compression technique is used in most video coding standards. Motion and disparity estimation are needed to realize the predicted coding compression technique. Their performing algorithm is block matching algorithm used in most video coding standards. Full search algorithm is a base algorithm of block matching algorithm which finds an optimal block to compare the base block with every other block in the search area. This algorithm presents the best efficiency for finding optimal blocks, but it has very large computational loads. In this paper, we have proposed fast disparity estimation algorithm using motion and disparity vector information of the prior frame in stereo image coding. We can realize fast disparity vector estimation in order to reduce search area by taking advantage of global disparity vector and to decrease computational loads by limiting search points using motion vectors and disparity vectors of prior frame. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in the simple image sequence than complex image sequence. We conclude that the fast disparity vector estimation is possible in simple image sequences by reducing computational complexities.

  • In this paper, we described the implementation and the sound quality assessment of a real-time stereo audio codec using TMS320C40 DSP (digital signal processing) chip for low bitrte and high quality audio. We implemented hardware and software in order to overcome a real-time processing problem of audio compression algorithm that can be produced by largely recursive computing and complexity of the process. We have studied five types of distortion that can be produced by perceptual coding and the codec was evaluated by eight test musics that are selected in SQAM (sound quality assessment material) 422-2-4-2 produced by EBU (european broadcast union). The subjective listening tests were carried out on the codec quality and preformance by double blind method in a listening room with eleven listeners. As a result, 5 grade-impairment scale was scored under minus one and the codec quality was evaluated to be perceptible, but not annoying.

  • This paper presents an efficient and robust approach for determining the correspondence between unbalanced stereo images. The disparity vectors were used instead of feature points, such as corners, to calculate a correspondence relationship. For a faster and optimal estimation, the vectors were classified into several regions, and the homography of each region was calculated using the RANSAC algorithm. The correspondence image was calculated from the images transformed by each homography. Although it provided good results under normal conditions, it was difficult to obtain reliable results in an unbalanced stereo pair. Therefore, a balancing method is also proposed to minimize the unbalance effects using the histogram specification and structural similarity index. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach outperformed the baseline algorithms with respect to the speed and peak-signal-to-noise ratio. This work can be applied to practical fields including 3D depth map acquisition, fast stereo coding, 2D-to-3D conversion, etc.

  • In this paper, we propose an object-based stereo sequence compression technique using disparity-motion vector relationship. The proposed method uses the coherence of motion vectors and disparity vectors in the left and right Image sequences. After two motion vectors and one disparity vector ate computed using FBMA(Fixed Block Matching Algorithm), the disparity vector of the current stereoscopic pall is computed by disparity-motion vector relationship with vectors which are previously estimated. Moreover, a vector regularization technique is applied in order to obtain reliable vectors. For an object-based coding. the object is defined and coded in terms of layers of VOP such as in MPEG-4. we present a method using disparity and motion vector relationship for extending two-frame compensation into three-frame compensation method for prediction coding of B-VOP. The proposed algorithm shows a high performance when comparing with a conventional method.

  • Rectification is used as a preprocessing to reduce the computation complexity of disparity estimation. However, rectification also requires a complex computation. To minimize the computing complexity, rectification using a lookup-table (R-LUT) has been introduced. However, since, the R-LUT consumes large amount of memory, rectification with compressed LUT (R-CLUT) has been introduced. However, the more we reduce the memory consumption, the more we need decoding overhead. Therefore, we need to attain an acceptable trade-off between the size of LUT and decoding overhead. In this paper, we present such a trade-off by adaptively combining simple coding methods, such as differential coding, modified run-length coding (MRLE), and Huffman coding. Differential coding is applied to transform coordinate data into a differential form in order to further improve the coding efficiency along with Huffman coding for better stability and MRLE for better performance. Our experimental results verified that our coding scheme yields high performance with maintaining robustness. Our method showed about ranging from 1 % to 16 % lower average inverse of compression ratio than the existing methods. Moreover, we maintained low latency with tolerable hardware overhead for real-time implementation.
