  • Pain management is an important part of dental practice, and dentists frequently prescribe analgesics to improve clinical outcomes. Dentists should be aware of the pharmacological characteristics of the analgesics commonly used in dentistry and should choose appropriate analgesics to treat and prevent pain associated with inflammation or surgery. In this article, we review the potential benefits and risks of the analgesics frequently used in dental practice and provide a stepwise approach for pain management.

  • Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a wireless network consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices, using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions. WSNs face the critical challenge of sustaining long-term operation on limited battery energy. Coverage maintenance has been proposed as a promising approach to prolong network lifetime. Mobile sensors equipped with communication devices can be leveraged to overcome the coverage problem. In this paper, we propose a stepwise movement scheme using perimeter coverage property for the coverage maintenance problem. In our scheme, each sensor monitors neighboring dead nodes, determines vulnerable node (i.e. dead node which makes uncovered area), computes the center of uncovered area HC, and makes a coordinated stepwise movement to compensate the uncovered area. In our experimental results, our scheme shows at least 50 % decrease in the total moving distance which determines the energy efficiency of mobile sensor.

  • Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a retrofitting method for steel composite bridges. However, the method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at anchorages and inefficient load-carrying capability of live loads. Multi-stepwise prestressing method using thermal expanded coverplate is a newly proposed prestressing method, which was originally developed for prestressing steel structures. A new retrofitting method for steel girder bridges founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of cover plate, the method is a hybrid of and combines the advantages of external post-tensioning and thermal prestressing. In this paper, basic concepts of the method are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced. From actual experimental data, the thermal prestressing effect was substantiated and the FEM approach for its analysis was verified. The retrofitting effects ofa single-span bridge were analyzed and the feasibility of the developed method was examined.

  • Automatic test case generation for testing an embedded software is considered. Existing tools for test case generation such as finite state machine or mutant test usually adopt top down approach and depend upon graphical transition and decision table, which makes it difficult to find out where the bugs exist. Also it is hard to describe the special features of embedded systems such as concurrent execution of individual components. Most of embedded systems interacts with the real world, receiving signals through sensors or switches and sending output signals to actuators that somehow manipulate the environment. Embedded software controls the entire system based on the logics such as interpreting the sensor inputs and making the actuators to start or stop their intended operation. This study proposes an automatic test case generation procedure that tests the system starting from the control logics of sensors, switches and actuators and then their concurrent execution controls, and finally the entire system operation. Such a stepwise approach makes it easy to generate test cases to tell where the bugs of embedded software exist.

  • The objective of this study was to construct Italian ryegrass (IRG) dry matter yield (DMY) estimation models in South Korea based on climatic data by locations. Obviously, the climatic environment of Jeju Island has great differences with Korean Peninsula. Meanwhile, many data points were from Jeju Island in the prepared data set. Statistically significant differences in both DMY values and climatic variables were observed between south areas of Korean Peninsula and Jeju Island. Therefore, the estimation models were constructed separately for south areas of Korean Peninsula and Jeju Island separately. For south areas of Korean Peninsula, a data set with a sample size of 933 during 26 years was used. Four optimal climatic variables were selected through a stepwise approach of multiple regression analysis with DMY as the response variable. Subsequently, via general linear model, the final model including the selected four climatic variables and cultivated locations as dummy variables was constructed. The model could explain 37.7% of the variations in DMY of IRG in south areas of Korean Peninsula. For Jeju Island, a data set containing 130 data points during 17 years were used in the modeling construction via the stepwise approach of multiple regression analysis. The model constructed in this research could explain 51.0% of the variations in DMY of IRG. For the two models, homoscedasticity and the assumption that the mean of the residuals were equal to zero were satisfied. Meanwhile, the fitness of both models was good based on most scatters of predicted DMY values fell within the 95% confidence interval.

  • A subsidiary-main track for passenger station is a low-speed track section distinct from a through route such as a main track. It is parallel to a through track and connected to it at both ends by switches. Sidetracks allow for fast, high priority trains to pass slower or lower priority trains going the same direction. They are important for efficiency to order and organize the flow of rail traffic. In this paper we first describe the minimum headway between trains using the concept of occupation time in a block section, which depends on block systems, signalling system and safety technology. And then a stepwise approach is presented to select station, which is suitable to install sidetrack for a given train-traffic pattern. This approach is tested with sample example data, which are surveyed from track geometry based on the to-be-constructed line.

  • This paper addresses the definition of the driver's functions for an automated vehicle of level 3, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers. By combining the constituent systems surrounding the automated vehicles in specific use cases, their interactions could be refined in a stepwise approach. This approach enables traceability of interactions between drivers, automated driving systems, and other constituent systems.

  • Purpose - Going concern is one of fundamental concepts in accounting and auditing and sometimes the assessment of a company's going concern status that is a tough process. Various going concern prediction models' based on statistical and data mining methods help auditors and stakeholders suggested in the previous literature. Research design - This paper employs a data mining approach to prediction of going concern status of Iranian firms listed in Tehran Stock Exchange using Particle Swarm Optimization. To reach this goal, at the first step, we used the stepwise discriminant analysis it is selected the final variables from among of 42 variables and in the second stage; we applied a grid-search technique using 10-fold cross-validation to find out the optimal model. Results - The empirical tests show that the particle swarm optimization (PSO) model reached 99.92% and 99.28% accuracy rates for training and holdout data. Conclusions - The authors conclude that PSO model is applicable for prediction going concern of Iranian listed companies.

  • Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA), a non-parametric productivity analysis tool, has become an accepted approach for assessing efficiency in a wide range of fields. Despite of its extensive applications, some features of DEA remain bothersome. DEA offers no guidelines to where relatively inefficient DMU(Decision Making Unit) improve since a reference set of an inefficient DMU consists of several efficient DMUs and it doesn't provide a stepwise path for improving the efficiency of each inefficient DMU considering the difference of efficiency. We aim to show that DEA can be used to evaluate the efficiency of System Integration Projects and suggest the methodology which overcomes the limitation of DEA through hybrid analysis utilizing DEA along with machine learning.
