  • In this paper, an investigation of factors affecting piezoelectric transformers is presented by ATILA software. These transformers are multi-layer piezoelectric transformers in square shape $28\;{\times}\;28\;mm$ and operate in first vibration mode for step-down function. The piezoelectric transformers were modeled in 3D-dimension and analyzed using finite element method in ATILA software, a popular software in piezoelectric analysis. Modal and harmonic modules were used in this process. Effective factors to the properties of piezoelectric transformers including different input electrode patterns, directions of polarization, sizes of connective comer, number of layers were examined on the simulated model using input voltage of 20 V and load resistance of $100\;{\Omega}$. Moreover, thermal analysis was also obtained with conditions of input voltage of 5 V and no-load.

  • Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PMN-PZT ceramics with a high mechanical quality factor$(Q_m)$ and a low temperature sintering temperature were investigated as a function of PZN substitution in order to develop multilayer piezoelectric transformer for AC-DC converter. Multilayer piezoelectric transformers were subsequently manufactured using the PMN-PZN-PZT ceramic offering the optimal behavior and then the electrical performance were invetigated. At the sintering temperature of $940^{\circ}C$, density, electromechanical coupling factor$(k_p)$, mechanical qualify factor$(Q_m)$ and dielectric constant$(\varepsilon_r)$ of 8 mol% PZN substituted specimen were $7.73g/cm^3$, 0.524, 1573 and 1455, respectively. The PZN substitution caused a increase in the dielectric constant and the electromechnical coupling factor. The voltage step-up ratio of multilayer piezoelectric transformer showed the maximum value at near the resonant frequency of 76.55 kHz and increased according to the increase of load resistance. The multilayer piezoelectric transformer with the output impedance coincided with the load resistance showed the temperature increase of less than $20^{\circ}C$ at the output power of 10 W. Based on the results, the manufactured multilayer transformer using the low temperature sintered PMN-PZN-PZT ceramics can be stably driven for both step-up and down transformers.

  • In conventional three-phase rectifiers, it was necessary to use a transformer to obtain low output voltage. In this paper, we propose a new three-phase rectifiers circuit that achieves low voltage by using a very simple circuit configuration that does not have a transformer and does not need any complex control. We also describe the operation principle of the proposed circuit, and derive a theoretical formula for its current waveform. On the basis of this formula it also explores the theoretical input/output current characteristics, theoretical current amplification factor, and theoretical output voltage characteristics of these theoretical values with experimentally obtained input/output current characteristics, current amplification factor, and output voltage characteristics, allowed us to confirm the soundness of our theoretical analyses.

  • This paper present a new sort of multilayer piezoelectric ceramic transformer for the application to AC-adapters. This piezoelectric transformers operate in the second and third length extensional vibration mode. And the output performance of two types of piezoelectric transformers are compared by ANSYS, which is one of the FEM analysis program. As a result the minimum displacement was occurred at the two points in second length extensional vibration mode and three point in third length extensional vibration mode. One is the middle of input and the other is middle of output parts. And output voltage was inversely decreased by increasing number of output layers. Also The third mode type is shown higher power transition ratio than the second mode type.

  • This paper describes a high power resonant inverter for diagnostic X-ray generators using zero-voltage soft-switching technology. The system consists of a step-down chopper, a resonant phase-shift PWM inverter, a hihg-voltage diode, and high voltage cables a smoothing DC capacitor. The inverter makes use the leakage inductance of the hihg-voltage transformer and external capacitor as resonant components. The rectified input voltage is controlled by a step-down chopper with input voltage compensator. The output regualtion is obtained by a resonant phase-shift PWM inverter with the digital feedback controller using DSP (digital signal processor), resulting in fast rising time and wide output voltage variation. The theoretical results are correlated with results from an experimental prototype of a 7-kVp, 300mA (21kW).

  • Differential power processing (DPP) systems are among the most effective architectures for photovoltaic (PV) power systems because they are highly efficient as a result of their distributed local maximum power point tracking ability, which allows the fractional processing of the total generated power. However, DPP systems require a high-efficiency, high step-up/down bidirectional converter with broad operating ranges and galvanic isolation. This study proposes a single, magnetic, high-efficiency, high step-up/down bidirectional DC-DC converter. The proposed converter is composed of a bidirectional flyback and a bidirectional isolated switched-capacitor cell, which are competitively cheap. The output terminals of the flyback converter and switched-capacitor cell are connected in series to obtain the voltage step-up. In the reverse power flow, the converter reciprocally operates with high efficiency across a broad operating range because it uses hard switching instead of soft switching. The proposed topology achieves a genuine on-off interleaved energy transfer at the transformer core and windings, thus providing an excellent utilization ratio. The dynamic characteristics of the converter are analyzed for the controller design. Finally, a 240 W hardware prototype is constructed to demonstrate the operation of the bidirectional converter under a current feedback control loop. To improve the efficiency of a PV system, the maximum power point tracking method is applied to the proposed converter.

  • This paper presents the idea of a smart load that can adjust the input power flow based on the intermittent power available from RESs (Renewable Energy Resources) to regulate the line voltage, and draw a constant power from the grid. To this effect, an innovative power flow controller is presented based on a Resistive ES (Electric Spring) in combination with a PEAT (Power Electronics based Adjustable Transformer), which can effectively shape the load power flow at the subnetwork level. With a PEAT incorporated in the step down transformer at the grid side, the proposed controller can supply non-critical loads through local RESs, and the critical loads can draw a relatively constant power from the grid. If there is an abundance of power produced by the RESs, the controller can supply both non-critical loads and critical loads through the RES, which significantly reduces the power demand from the grid. The principle, practicality, stability analysis, and controller design are presented. In addition, simulation results show that the power flow controller performs well in shaping the load power flow at the subnetwork level, which decreases the power demand on the grid. Experimental results are also provided to show that the controller can be realized.

  • This paper proposes an active-clamp ac-dc converter with direct power conversion that has a simple structure and achieves high efficiency. The proposed converter is derived by integrating the step-down ac chopper and the output-voltage doubler. The proposed converter provides direct ac-dc conversion and dc output voltage without using any full-bridge diode rectifier. The step-down ac chopper using an active-clamp mechanism serves to clamp the voltage spike across the main switches and provides zero-voltage turn-on switching. The resonant-current path formed by the leakage inductance of the transformer and the resonant capacitor of the output-voltage doubler achieves the zero-current turn-off switching of the output diodes. The operation principle of the converter is analyzed and verified. A 500W prototype is implemented to show the performance of the proposed converter. The prototype provides maximum efficiency of 95.1% at the full load.

  • This paper is analyzed for a step up-down DC/DC chopper of high efficiency added electric isolation. The converters of high efficiency are generally made that the power loss of the used semiconductor switching devices is minimized. To achieve high efficiency system, the proposed chopper is constructed by using a partial resonant circuit. The control switches using in the chopper are operated with soft switching by partial resonant method. The control switches are operated without increasing their voltage and current stresses by the soft switching technology. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of the chopper is high. The proposed chopper is also added electric isolation which is used a pulse transformer. When the power conversion system is required electric isolation, the proposed chopper is adopted with the converter system development of high efficiency. The soft switching operation and the system efficiency of the proposed chopper are verified by digital simulation and experimental results.
