  • The effects of hydrodynamics and alum dose on particle growth were investigated by monitoring particle counts in a rapid mixing process. Experiments were performed to measure the particle growth and breakup under various conditions. The rapid mixing scheme consisted of the following operating parameters: Velocity gradient (G) ($200-300s^{-1}$), alum dose (10-50 mg/L) and mixing time (30-180 s). The Poisson regression model was applied to assess the effects of the doses and velocity gradient with mixing time. The mechanism for the growth and breakup of particles was elucidated. An increase in alum dose was found to accelerate the particle count reduction. The particle count at a G value of $200s^{-1}$ decreased more rapidly than those at $300s^{-1}$. The growth and breakup of larger particles were more clearly observed at higher alum doses. Variations of particles due to aggregation and breakup of micro-flocs in rapid mixing step were interactively affected by G, mixing time and alum dose. Micro-flocculation played an important role in a rapid mixing process.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the high-efficiency anaerobic digestion of organic wastes with high fat content. Specifically, the analysis focused on biogas production performance with a focus on carbon number and the double bond count of the long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), which are hydrolysis products of triglycerides. Methods: Experiments were performed under mesophilic anaerobic conditions with a feed-to-microorganism ratio (F/M) of 1.0. Biogas production performance was analyzed through biogas production patterns, lag-phase, and the time required for 90% biogas production (T90). Results: Biogas production increased when the content of unsaturated LCFAs (containing relatively large numbers of carbon atoms) increased. In substrate containing LCFAs with four or more double bonds, although the initial lag-phase in biogas production was shortened, development of a three-step lag-phase resulted in decreased biogas production. These results suggest that high rates of anaerobic digestion are possible when the LCFAs have high unsaturated fatty acid content with three or fewer double bonds. Conclusions: When various types of LCFAs are digested anaerobically, biogas production performance can be improved if the unsaturated fatty acid content and number of double bonds are optimized for maximum production.

  • Three physical methods, photostimulated luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL), and electron spin resonance (ESR), have been applied to detect the irradiation treatment for the non- and steamed sesame seed samples. PSL successfully screened the irradiated samples from the non-irradiated control by comparing their photon counts (PCs) with the lower (less than 700 count/60 sec) and upper threshold values (higher than 5,000 count/60 sec). TL signals were still detected in all irradiated samples even after steaming, which was reconfirmed with TL ratios [integrated area of $TL_1$ (the first glow)/$TL_2$ (the second glow)] through re-irradiation step. ESR spectrometry showed that radiation-induced cellulose radicals were detected in all the irradiated samples irrespective of steaming treatment. Identification of the irradiated sesame seeds was possible even after steaming by analyzing PSL, TL, and ESR.

  • The fungal distribution, diversity, and load were analyzed in the geographically segregated island groundwater systems in Korea. A total of 79 fungal isolates were secured from seven islands and identified based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. They belonged to three phyla (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Chlorophyta), five classes, sixteen orders, twenty-two families, and thirty-one genera. The dominant phylum was Ascomycota (91.1%), with most fungi belonging to the Cladosporium (21.5%), Aspergillus (15.2%), and Stachybotrys (8.9%) genera. Cladosporium showed higher dominance and diversity, being widely distributed throughout the geographically segregated groundwater systems. Based on the diversity indices, the genera richness (4.821) and diversity (2.550) were the highest in the groundwater system of the largest scale. As turbidity (0.064-0.462) increased, the overall fungal count increased and the residual chlorine (0.089-0.308) had low relevance compared with the total count and fungal diversity. Cladosporium showed normal mycelial growth in de-chlorinated sterilized samples. Overall, if turbidity increases under higher fungal diversity, bio-deterioration in groundwater-supplying facilities and public health problems could be intensified, regardless of chlorine treatment. In addition to fungal indicators and analyzing methods, physical hydrostatic treatment is necessary for monitoring and controlling fungal contamination.

  • This paper proposes an SWAD-KNH(Sybil & Wormhole Attack Detection using Key, Neighbor list and Hop count) technique which consists of an SWAD(Sybil & Wormhole Attack Detection) module detecting an Worm attack and a KGDC(Key Generation and Distribution based on Cluster) module generating and an sense node key and a Group key by the cluster and distributing them. The KGDC module generates a group key and an sense node key by using an ECDH algorithm, a hash function, and a key-chain technique and distributes them safely. An SWAD module strengthens the detection of an Sybil attack by accomplishing 2-step key acknowledgement procedure and detects a Wormhole attack by using the number of the common neighbor nodes and hop counts of an source and destination node. As the result of the SWAD-KNH technique shows an Sybil attack detection rate is 91.2% and its average FPR 3.82%, a Wormhole attack detection rate is 90%, and its average FPR 4.64%, Sybil and wormhole attack detection rate and its reliability are improved.

  • The distance vector-hop wireless sensor node location method is one of typical range-free location methods. In distance vector-hop location method, if a wireless node A can directly communicate with wireless sensor network nodes B and C at its communication range, the hop count from wireless sensor nodes A to B is considered to be the same as that form wireless sensor nodes A to C. However, the real distance between wireless sensor nodes A and B may be dissimilar to that between wireless sensor nodes A and C. Therefore, there may be a discrepancy between the real distance and the estimated hop count distance, and this will affect wireless sensor node location error of distance vector-hop method. To overcome this problem, it proposes a wireless sensor network node location method by modifying the method of distance estimation in the distance vector-hop method. Firstly, we set three different communication powers for each node. Different hop counts correspond to different communication powers; and so this makes the corresponding relationship between the real distance and hop count more accurate, and also reduces the distance error between the real and estimated distance in wireless sensor network. Secondly, distance difference between the estimated distance between wireless sensor network anchor nodes and their corresponding real distance is computed. The average value of distance errors that is computed in the second step is used to modify the estimated distance from the wireless sensor network anchor node to the unknown sensor node. The improved node location method has smaller node location error than the distance vector-hop algorithm and other improved location methods, which is proved by simulations.

  • In order to secure safe meals, the hazards of microorganisms associated with food poisoning accident should be monitored and controlled in real situations. It is necessary to determined the correlation between existing common bacteria number (aerobic plate count; APC) and RLU (relative light unit) in cookware. In this paper, we investigate the correlation between ATP (RUL) and APC (CFU) by using three types of transform (inverse, square root, log transforms) of raw data in two steps. Among these transforms, the log transform at the first step has been found to be optimal for the data of cutting board, knife, soup bowl (stainless), and tray (carbon). The square root-inverse and the square root-square root transform at the second step have been shown to be optimal respectively for the cup and for the soup bowl (carbon) data.

  • At the case of peak threshold algorithm, 3-axes data should sample step data over 20 Hz to get sufficient accuracy. But most of the digital sensors like 3-axes accelerometer have very low sampling rate caused by low data communication speed on limited SPI or $I^2C$ bandwidth of the low-cost MPU for ubiquitous devices. If the data transfer rate of the 3-axes accelerometer is getting slow, the sampling rate also slows down and it finally degrades the data accuracy. In this study, we proved there is a distinct functional relation between the sampling rate and threshold on the peak threshold step detection algorithm under the 20Hz frequency, and made a threshold function through the experiments. As a result of experiments, when we apply threshold value from the threshold function instead of fixed threshold value, the step detection error rate can be lessen about 1.2% or under. Therefore, we can suggest a peak threshold based new step detection algorithm with threshold function and it can enhance the accuracy of step detection and step count. This algorithm not only can be applied on a digital step counter design, but also can be adopted any other low-cost ubiquitous sensor devices subjected on low sampling rate.

  • Due to the size limit, the voice coil motor (VCM) is adopted in most of the mobile phone camera to control auto-focus instead of step motor. The optical system using the VCM has the property that the focus values are varying even though the same current is induced. It means that an error of the lens position was taken placed due to the characteristics of the VCM. In this paper, a algorithm was proposed to compensate the lens position error using the step size and the search count of each stage. In the proposed algorithm -7 step middle searching stage is inserted the conventional searching algorithm for the fast auto-focus searching and the final searing step size was set to +1 for the precise focus control, respectively. In the experimental results, the focus values was found more fast in the proposed algorithm than the conventional. And more the image quality by the proposed algorithm was superior to that of the conventional.
