Steering system is most important for vehicle in safety and driving feel. However, testing using real car to improve steering feel is often difficult in aspect to repeatability, safety and money. Repeatability in testing steering system is very important because steering feel for driver is variable according to the environment condition. And steering testing of vehicle is so dangerous that driver may not concentrate in testing. In this paper, the steering system simulator using front part of steering and suspension system was developed. We can test the electric power steering system for the light weight vehicle using this simulator cheap, safely and repeatably.
The Steering system is the most important system for a vehicle, in terms of safety and driving feel. But in many cases, experiments to improve the steering feel using a real vehicle are very difficult in the aspects of repeatability, safety and money. Repeatability in testing steering systems is very important because the steering feel for a driver varies according to the environmental conditions. In addition to that, steering tests using vehicle are so dangerous that the driver might not concentrate on the tests. In this paper, a new steering system simulator using the front part of a steering and suspension system is described. This simulator allows cheap, safe, and repeatable testing of the steering system compared with the real vehicle test.
A haptic steering system which reflects steering reaction torque has been developed for a fixed base vehicle simulator. The haptic steering system consists of a steering effort sensor, MR-clutch, AC servo motor and controller. In order to generate realistic steering torque feel to driver and at the same time to meet real-time simulation requirement, 3D torque map is constructed by experimental data and torque generation algorithm using the torque map has been also developed. 3D torque map is constructed using curve fitting and interpolation of the measured values of the steering angle, velocity and steering torque from actual slalom test on the proving ground. In order to carry out performance test of the developed haptic steering system, a fixed based vehicle simulator is constructed by integrating real time vehicle dynamics module, VR-video/audio module, and the haptic steering system. Steering torque and steering angle curves have been obtained from virtual testing in the vehicle simulator and performance of the haptic steering system has been evaluated.
EPS (Electric Power Steering) is important device for improving vehicle's dynamics and static performances. This paper deals with simulator design for C-EPS (Colum type-EPS), development assist and returnability control algorithm. First, C-EPS system model was simply designed because EPS system is complex control system that has many unknown variables. These parameters were simplified through assumptions. Second, C-EPS simulator was designed for development of control algorithm. This simulator has SAS (Steering Angle Sensor), dual torque sensor, dual load cell for measuring rack force, dual linear actuator for generating tire force and Data Acquisition System. Using this simulator, control methods ware tested. Third, control algorithm was designed for torque assist and returnability. Assist torque map and returnability torque map were found by lots of simulation test. These torque maps were tuned for EPS actuator control. The simulation result was compared with non-EPS system result. In this research, the C-EPS simulator was designed for development of control algorithm about torque assistant and returnability. Using this simulator, control algorithm was improved.
The aim of this study was to evaluate driving performance of normal subjects for controlling the steering wheel by using foot operated steering devices in the driving simulator. Many people with complete bilateral loss or loss of use of upper limbs but with normal lower limbs are frequently left without use and/ or control of their hands, arms, or the upper extremities of their bodies. As a result, persons disabled in this manner have problems in operation an automobile because they cannot grasp and manipulate a conventional steering wheel. Therefore, if foot operated steering devices are used for controlling the vehicle on in people with disabilities, the disabled people could improve their community mobility by driving a car safely. Ten normal subjects were involved in this research to evaluate steering performance by using three types of steering devices(conventional steering wheel, pedal type foot steering, circular type foot steering) in driving simulator. STISim Drive 3 program was used for testing the driving performance in two road scenarios: straight road and curved road at low and high speed of vehicle (40 km/h and 80 km/h). This study used two-way ANOVA to compare the influences of two factors(type of foot steering device and road scenario) in the three dependent variables of steering performance(standard deviation of lateral position, the lateral position of vehicle and the number of line crossing). The average values of the three dependent variables(standard deviation of lateral position, lateral position and the number of line crossing) of driving performance were significantly smaller for conventional steering wheel or pedal type foot steering than circular type foot steering.
The test method using simulator to objectively measure the steering feel from several drivers was proposed. It has also described the ideas to analyse the principal factors affecting the steering feel of the driver using the correlation analysis of the measured data and the questionnaire. Proportional Derivative(PD) controller has been used to measure the steering feel, and the control parameters have been selected to obtain the optimal steering feel. Membership frictions of Sugeno fuzzy model are constructed from the assist torque values calculated from PD controller at each steering state. Moreover to verify the performance, this fuzzy controller has been compared with the another fuzzy controller of which membership frictions are derived from the knowledge of drivers. As a result it can be concluded that the proposed fuzzy controller improves the steering feel at each steering state more than any other conventional methods.
In this paper, a steering feel simulator is designed and implemented using a steering wheel with a rotation angle sensor, torque sensor, and an ac motor for the generation of the required torque. The controller in the simulator consists of a 16-bit micro-controller, a D/A converter and A/D converters. The main objective of the controller is to perform torque control where the reference torque is calculated from the torque map for both the vehicle velocity and the wheel sensor cutout. It is shown via the experimentation using the proposed simulator that the simulator output performance can be easily understood for the variation of vehicle parameters or controller parameters.
The aim of this study was to evaluate driving performance of Healthy and disabled groups (with or without driver's license) to control steering wheel by using steering assistive devices in the driving simulator. The persons with partial loss of use of all four limbs have problems in operation of the motor vehicle because of functional loss to operate steering wheel. Therefore, if steering assistive devices for grasping the steering wheel are used to control the vehicle on the road in persons with disabilities, the disabled persons can improve mobility in their community life by driving a motor vehicle safely. Ten healthy subjects (with or w/o driver's license) and ten subjects with physical disabilities (with or w/o driver's license) were involved in this study to evaluate driving performance to operate steering wheel by using four types of steering assistive devices (Single-pin, V-grip, Palm-grip, Tri-pin) in driving simulator. STISim Drive 3 software was used to test the steering performance in four scenarios: straight road at low and high speed of vehicle (40 km/h and 80 km/h), curved road at low and high speed of vehicle (40 km/h and 80 km/h). This study used two-way ANOVA in order to compare the effects of two factors (type of steering assistive device and subject group) in the three dependent variables of driving performance (the lateral position of vehicle, standard deviation of lateral position representing the variation of the left and right movement of the vehicle and the number of line crossing). The mean values of the three dependent variables (lateral position, standard deviation of lateral position, the number of line crossing) of steering performance were statistically significantly smaller for the healthy or disabled groups with driver's license than the other groups without driver's license on the curved road at high speed of vehicle compared to low speed of vehicle.
A vehicle driving simulator is a virtual reality device which a human being feels as if the one drives a vehicle actually. Driving Operation System acts as an interface between a driver and a driving simulator. This paper suggests the driving operation system for a driving simulator. This system consists of a controller, DC geared motor, MR brake, rotary encoders, steeping motor and bevel gear box. Reaction force and torque on the steering system were made by DC_Motor and MR_Brake. Reaction force and torque on the steering system were compare between real car and a driving simulator. The controller based on the 80C196KC micro processor that manage and transfer signal.
The focus of this research is to set up and describe the mathematical derivation of an automobile power-assisted rack and pinion steering system dynamics. The mathematical model of the power steering system dynamics with a 5 DOF linear vehicle model will be used in the computer simulation and evaluated comparing with the experimental results. This model is flexible to accommodate different vehicles through simple parameter changes. The developed mathematical model will attempt to provide enhanced driver realism to a Systems Technology, Inc. driving SIMulator(STISIM).
