The Zn-Al composite electroplating was studied by using chloride zinc bath containing metal hydroxides $(Zn(OH)_2,\;Al(OH)_3))$ and aluminium powder. The size of Al powder codeposited in the beaker bath with Al powder of-400 mesh was under 10${\mu}m$. The Zn-Al composite was electro-deposited at 40$^{\circ}C$ in the ranges of current density of 5-50 A/$dm^2$ in the flowing electrolyte. The content of aluminium particles codeposited increased slightly with increasing flow rate of electrolyte from 0.5 m/sec to 1.0 m/sec, and decreased with increasing current density from 5 A/$dm^2$ to 50 A/$dm^2$. The content of aluminium particles codeposited by using the electrolyte containing zinc hydroxide(0.1M) was 2~4 wt%. The Al powder was codeposited mainly near the surface layer of the electrodeposits. The dissolution rate of aluminium particles in the electrolyte containing 0.1M $Zn(OH)_2$ and Boric acid was 0.41 g/l. day in comparison with 1.5 g/l. day dissolution rate in pure chloride bath.

($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{x}$ )N coatings were deposited by an ion-plating method in a reactor with two separate metal sources, Ti and Cr. Ti was evaporated using an electron beam, while Cr evaporation was carried out by resistant heating. The Ti and Cr concentrations in the coatings were controlled by the Ti and Cr evaporation ratio. The coating hardness increased with increasing the Cr content(x) and showed a maximum value of 6,000 HK at around x=0.8. The critical load of the coatings, measured by the scratch test, was around 30 N. The wear resistance properties of the ($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{ x}$)N coatings were evaluated using a CSEM pin-on-disk type tribometer. A Cr-steel ball as well as a SiC ball, which had hardness values of 590 HK and 2,600 HK respectively, were used as the pin. After the wear test, the surface morphology, roughness and the concentration of the coatings were investigated, with the main focus being on the effect of wear debris and the transferred layer on the wear behavior.

This study focused on laser assisted machining (LAM) of silicon nitride ceramic that efficiently removes the material through machining of the softened zone by local heating. The effects of laser-assisted machining parameters were studied for cost reduction, and active application in processing of silicon nitride ceramics in this study. Laser assisted machining of silicon nitride allows effective cutting using CBN tool by local heating of the cutting part to the softening temperature of YSiAlON using by the laser beam. When silicon nitride is sufficiently preheated, the surface is oxidized and decomposed and then forms bloating, micro crack and silicate layer, thereby making the cutting process more advantageous. HIPSN and SSN specimens were used to study the machining characteristics. Higher laser power makes severer oxidation and decomposition of both materials. Therefore, HIPSN and SSN specimens were machined more effectively at higher power.
In preparative anti-corrosive coating experiments, polyaniline was obtained by reacting an oxidizing agent with the monomer aniline. Further, the primer coating was prepared using a variety of widely-used materials such as urethane resin. For the top coating, epoxy resin and acrylic urethane resin were used. Characteristics of the coatings were assessed according to KS and ASTM specifications, and the structure of the polyaniline was characterized using FT-IR and TGA. For analysis of anti-corrosive properties in salt-spray experiments, measurements of the oxidation state of iron and surface atomic analysis were conducted using XPS and SEM-EDX. Unlike general anti-corrosive coatings which exhibit anti-corrosive effects only as a primer coating, the anti-corrosive coatings using polyaniline as the anti-corrosive pigment showed a marked synergistic effect with the top coatings. In other words, the top coatings not only produce a fine view effect, but also increase, through interaction with the primer coatings, the resistance to diffusion of corrosive factors from the external environment. It was also found that, unlike the heavy metal oxide-forming layer of the passive barrier alone, the polyaniline anti-corrosive pigment oxidized iron at the interface with the iron substrate to form a passive barrier in the oxidic layer, and itself formed a potential barrier layer with anti-corrosive factors from the external environment. Although the passive layer was damaged, the damaged area did not become completely oxidized iron; on the contrary, it showed a tendency to reduction. This can be interpreted such that a passive layer is formed again on the damaged area, and that at the same time there is a tendency to self-healing.
This study synthesized pure anatase carbon doped $TiO_2$ photocatalysts supported on a stainless steel mesh using a sol-gel solution of 8% polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/dimethylformamide (DMF)/$TiCl_4$. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature and holding time on the morphological characteristics, particle sizes and surface area of the prepared catalyst was investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized by several analytical methods: high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD patterns showed that the supported $TiO_2$ nanocrystals are typically anatase, polycrystalline and body-centered tetragonal in structure. The EDS and XPS results complemented one another and confirmed the presence of carbon species in or on the $TiO_2$ layer, and the XPS data suggested the substitution of titanium in $TiO_2$ by carbon. Instead of using calcination, PAN pyrolysis was used to control the carbon content, and the mesoporosity was tailored by the applied temperature. The supported $TiO_2$ nanocrystals prepared by pyrolysis at 300, 350, and $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 h on a stainless steel mesh were actual supported carbon doped $TiO_2$ nanocrystals. Thus, $PAN/DMF/TiCl_4$ offers a facile, robust sol-gel related route for preparing supported carbon doped $TiO_2$ nanocomposites.

Galvanized steel has gone through a chemical process to keep it from corroding. The steel gets coated in layers of zinc because rust will not attack this protective metal. For countless outdoor, marine, or industrial applications, galvanized steel is an essential fabrication component. The reduction of the corrosion rate of zinc is an important topic. In the past, a very popular way to reduce the corrosion rate of zinc was to use chemical conversion layers based on $Cr^{+6}$. However, a significant problem that has arisen is that the use of chromium salts is now restricted because of environmental protection legislation. Therefore, it is very important to develop new zinc surface treatments that are environmentally friendly to improve the corrosion resistance of zinc and adhesion with a final organic protective layer. In this study, a Urethane solution (only Urethane 20 wt.%; S-700) and an organic/inorganic solution with Si (Si polysilicate 10 wt.% + Urethane 10 wt.%; LRO-317) are used. Based on the salt spray test of 72 h, S-700 and LRO-317 had a superior effect for the corrosion resistance on EGI and HDGI, respectively.
Recently the application of laser welding technology has been considered to shipbuilding structure. However, when this technology is applied to primer coated steel, good quality weld beads are not easily obtained. Because the primer-coated layer caused the spatter, humping bead and porosity which are main part of the welding defect attributed to the powerful vaporizing pressure of zinc. So we performed experiment with objectives of understanding spatter and porosity formation mechanism and producing sound weld beads in 6mmt primer coated steels by a $CO_2$ CW laser. The effects of welding parameters; defocused distance, welding speed, coated thickness and coated position; were investigated in the bead shape and penetration depth on bead and lap welding. Alternative idea was suggested to suspend the welding defect by giving a reasonable gap clearance for primer coated thickness. The zinc of primer has a boiling point that is lower than melting point of steel. Zinc vapor builds up at the interface between the two sheets and this tends to deteriorate the quality of the weld by ejecting weld material from lap position or leaving porosity. Significant effects of primer coated position was lap side rather than surface. Therefore introducing a small gap clearance in the lap position, the zinc vapor could escape through it and sound weld beads can be acquired. In conclusion, formation and suspension mechanism of the welding defects was suggested by controling the factors.
In the flux used in the batch galvanizing process, the effect of the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 on the microstructure, coating adhesion, and corrosion resistance of Zn-Mg-Al ternary alloy-coated steel is evaluated. Many defects such as cracks and bare spots are formed inside the Zn-Mg-Al coating layer during treatment with the flux composition generally used for Zn coating. Deterioration of the coating property is due to the formation of AlClx mixture generated by the reaction of Al element and chloride in the flux. The coatability of the Zn-Mg-Al alloy coating is improved by increasing the content of ZnCl2 in the flux to reduce the amount of chlorine reacting with Al while maintaining the flux effect and the coating adhesion is improved as the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 decreases. Zn-Mg-Al alloy-coated steel products treated with the optimized flux composition of NH4Cl·3ZnCl2 show superior corrosion resistance compared to Zn-coated steel products, even with a coating weight of 60 %.

The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of SA106 Grade B (SA106B) carbon steel in H2SO44-N2H4 and H2SO4-N2H4-CuSO4 solutions at 95 ℃ have been investigated with the addition of commercial corrosion inhibitors (CI#30 and No. 570S), to determine the stability of SA106B in the hydrazine-based reductive metal ion decontamination (HyBRID) process. The potentiodynamic polarization experiment revealed that the corrosion inhibitors were capable of lowering the corrosion rate of SA106B in H2SO4-N2H4 solution. It was found that the corrosion inhibitors induced formation of fixed surface layer on the carbon steel upon the corrosion. This corrosion inhibition performance was reduced in the presence of CuSO4 in the solution owing to the chemical reactions between organic compounds in the corrosion inhibitors and CuSO4. CI#30 showed a better corrosion inhibition effect in the H2SO4-N2H4-CuSO4 solution. Although the corrosion inhibitors can provide better stability to SA106B in the HyBRID solution, their application should be carefully considered because it may result in reduced decontamination performance and increased secondary waste generation.
The spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) method, which is an in-situ seismic technique, has mainly been developed and used for many years to determine the stiffness profile of layered media (such as asphalt concrete and layered soils) in an infinite half-space. This paper presents a modified experimental technique for nondestructive evaluation of in-place cement mortar compressive strength in single-layer concrete slabs of rather a finite thickness through a correlation to surface wave velocity. This correlation can be used in the quality control of early age cement mortar structures and in evaluating the integrity of structural members where the infinite half space condition is not met. In the proposed SASW field test, the surface of the structural members is subjected to an impact, using a 12 mm steel ball, to generate surface wave energy at various frequencies. Two accelerometer receivers detect the energy transmitted through the medium. By digitizing the analog receiver outputs, and recording the signals for spectral analysis, surface wave velocities can be identified. Modifications to the SASW method includes the reduction of boundary reflections as adopted on the surface waves before the point where the reflected compression waves reach the receivers. In this study, the correlation between the surface wave velocity and the compressive strength of cement mortar is developed using one 36"x36"x4"(91.44$\times$91.44$\times$91.44 cm) cement mortar slab of 2,000 psi (140 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and two 36"x36"x4"(91.44$\times$91.44$\times$91.44 cm) cement mortar slabs of 3,000 psi (210 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$).
