  • This paper proposes a Global-Local Analysis Method (GLAM) to assess the progressive collapse of steel framed structures under fire-induced column failure. GLAM obtains the overall structural response by combining dynamic analysis of the heated column (local) with static analysis of the overall structure (global). Test results of two steel frames which explicitly consider the dynamic effect during fire-induced column failure were employed to validate the proposed GLAM. Results show that GLAM gives reasonable predictions to the test frames in terms of both whether to collapse and the displacement verse temperature curves. Besides, several case studies of a two-dimensional (2D) steel frame and a three-dimensional (3D) steel frame with concrete slabs were conducted by using GLAM. Results show that GLAM gives the same collapse predictions to the studied cases with nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole structure model. Compared with nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole structure model, GLAM saves approximately 70% and 99% CPU time for the cases of 2D and 3D steel frame, respectively. Results also show that the load level of a structure has notable effects on the restraint condition of a heated column in the structure.

  • The Architects' design process is subjective and mysterious'. If we can reveal this process, it will be very helpful to proceed similar design projects. In the aspect of steel production, Korea is a strong country, but in the aspect of steel usage, Korea does not show its impacts as compared with other countries'. Even though steel has many merits in design as well as in structure, in Korea we have not applied it as design elements. In this situation, the demand of steel in school buildings is increasing, but steel also is used only on the basis of the structural and material meaning. So this thesis tries to find design elements of steel structure buildings, which can be applied in school buildings, through the analysis of existing steel structure buildings and the characteristics of steel.

  • This study aimed to develop a seismic retrofit technique using a steel frame which can be easily transported and assembled on site. This enables the retrofit steel frame to be easily attached to an existing structure minimizing the unwanted gap between the structure and the steel frame assembly. A one-story one-bay RC frame was tested with and without seismic retrofit using the proposed steel frame to verify the seismic retrofit effect of the proposed system, and an analysis model was developed in Opensees for seismic performance evaluation of a case study soft first-story model structure retrofitted with the developed steel frame assembly. Seismic performance of the model structure was also evaluated considering soil structure interaction effect. The experimental study confirmed that the proposed seismic retrofit system can be applied effectively to improve the seismic performance of framed structures. Time history analysis results of the model structure showed that the proposed steel frame assembly was effective in increasing the seismic load resisting capacity of the soft first-story structure. However more steel frame assemblies were required to satisfy the given performance limit state of the model structure located on weak soil due to the negative soil-structure interaction effect.

  • In the present study, an efficient method for the optimum design of three-dimensional (3D) steel framed structures is proposed. In this method, in addition to choosing the best position of columns based on architectural requirements, the optimum cross-sectional dimensions of elements are determined. The preliminary design variables are considered as the number of columns in structural plan, which are determined by a direct optimization method suitable for discrete variables, without requiring the evaluation of derivatives. After forming the geometry of structure, the main variables of the cross-sectional dimensions are evaluated, which satisfy the design constraints and also achieve the least-weight of the structure. To reduce the number of finite element analyses and the overall computational time, a new third order approximate function is introduced which employs only the diagonal elements of the higher order derivatives matrices. This function produces a high quality approximation and also, a robust optimization process. The main feature of the proposed techniques that the higher order derivatives are established by the first order exact derivatives. Several examples are solved and efficiency of the new approximation method and also, the proposed method for the best position of columns in 3D steel framed structures is discussed.

  • The primary objective of this study is to provide simple analytical tools to estimate dynamic characteristics of steel framed floor system in hospital building for vibration serviceability due to human activities, bogie, medical equipment. and so on. In order to evaluate the dynamic characteristics and vibration levels according to steel framed floor system, we had executed impact test and measurement on steel structure floor system in various hospital buildings. But perhaps most importantly, how to make the most of deduced design factor for design of hospital building. therefore we presented the access method such as the three-dimensional F.E. numerical analysis on the basis of the design drawing, and the properties of all floors for estimation of vibration level in hospital building.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural response of a multi-story building subjected to spreading multi-compartment fires. A recently proposed simple fire model has been used to simulate two spreading multi-compartment fire scenarios in a 10-story steel-framed office building. By assuming simple temperature rising and distribution profiles in the fire exposed structural components (steel beams, steel column and concrete slabs), finite element simulations using a three-dimensional structural model has been carried out to study the failure behavior of the whole structure in two multi-compartment fire conditions and also in a standard fire condition. The structure survived the standard fire but failed in the multi-compartment fire. Whilst more accurate fire models and heat transfer models are needed to better predict the behaviors of structures in realistic fires, the current study based on very simple models has demonstrated the importance and necessity of considering spreadingmulti-compartment fires in fire resistance design of multi-story buildings.

  • A methodology for estimation of statistical properties (viz. mean and standard deviation) of the expected seismic damage to reinforced concrete framed structures subject to corrosion of reinforcement, over a specified reference time (typically the service life of the structure) is proposed in this paper. The damage to the structure under the earthquake loading is characterised by the damage index, determined using the modified Park and Ang damage model. The reduction in area, yield strength and strain at ultimate of steel reinforcement, and the reduction in compressive strength of cover concrete due to corrosion are taken into account in the estimation of damage. The proposed methodology is illustrated through an example problem. From the results obtained, it is noted that there is an increase of about 70% in the mean value of expected seismic damage to the reinforced concrete frame considered over a reference time of 30 years when effect of corrosion is taken into consideration. This indicates that there is a need to consider the effect of corrosion of reinforcement on the estimation of expected seismic damage.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm, which can be designed the optimal sections of the composite framed structures constituted with the beams and the columns consisted of H type of steel section and concrete considering the reliability index. The optimized problem or the composite framed structures is formulated with the objective function and the constraints taking the section sizes as the design variables. The objective functions are constituted by the total costs of constructions. Also, the constraints are derived by considering the reliability index of section stress and allowable stress. The algorithm optimized the section of the composite framed structures utilizes the SUMT method using the modified Newton-Raphson direction method. The optimizing algorithm developed in this study is applied to the numerical examples with respecting a one-bay, one-story composite framed structure and a one-bay five-story one for the practical utilization of design on the composite framed structures using the reliability indices$({\beta})$ three and zero. In addition, their numerical results are compared and analyzed to examine the possibility of optimization the applicability, and the convergence this algorithm.
