  • Atmospheric pollutant emissions, mainly exhaust gas emissions from vessels, and the resultant social costs of pollution in the Korean harbor cities of Incheon, Mokpo, Gwangyang, Busan and Ulsan, are examined in this study, and the need for an emissions reduction plan is highlighted. Busan had several vessels entering its port, while Mokpo had few vessels, yet the vessels emission contribution was high in both the cities. Ulsan had world-class heavy-chemical industries, Gwangyang had steel mills and Incheon had a manufacturing industry and more vessels entering its port than Mokpo, yet the emission contribution was low in these cities. By calculating exhaust gas emissions from the vessels, it was found that CO2 was the highest, followed by NOx and SOx. By vessel type, Busan, Ulsan, and Incheon had more oil tank vessels, Gwangyang had more cargo vessels, and Mokpo had more ferries. As a result of social cost, Busan paid the highest, while the highest emission was PM. The use of low-sulfur oil can directly reduce PM and, SOx emissions and indirectly reduce NOx emissions. However, in order to reduce high CO2 emissions, only low-sulfur oil will not help. Therefore, the study suggested the need for reduction plan that use of fossil fuels, by using alternative maritime power (AMP).

  • Ship structure is composed of the welded mixture members which are plate and stiffeners. Ship structure is also influenced by variable loadings such as wave and inertia load. There have been several fatigue damage problems on the connection between longitudinal and transverse web due to wide usage of high tensile steel and adoption of wide web space to improve shipbuilding productivity. It is impossible to estimate the fatigue lives for all connection details through refined fatigue analysis. It is necessary to use the simplified approach for the fatigue life estimation of the connection details. PLUS analysis, which is suggested by the classification society, is one of the simplified approaches and is widely adopted to get fatigue lives for the connection details along whole cargo hold area. However, ship building yards still have difficulties to get fatigue lives due to large amount of calculation and time even if this approach reduce the time and amount of calculation. This paper treats the computing system developed to reduce efforts of estimating the fatigue lives. The influence factors of mean shear stress and local dynamic pressure are easily calculated and fatigue lives for all hot spots can be estimated automatically by the developed computing system. It is possible to reduce computing time and efforts to get the fatigue lives for the connection details between longitudinals and transverse webs along the ship. This system was applied to get fatigue lives on the connection details of a VLCC and verified the availability.

  • Chloride induced corrosion of steel reinforcement inside concrete is a major concern for concrete structures exposed to a marine environment. It is well known that transport of chloride ions in concrete occurs mainly through ionic/molecular diffusion, as a gradient of chloride concentration in the concrete pore solution is set. In the process of chloride transport, a portion of chlorides are bound in cement matrix then to be removed in the pore solution, and thus only the rest of chlorides which are not bound (i.e. free chlorides) leads the ingress of chlorides. However, since the measurement of free/bound chloride content is much susceptible to environmental conditions, chloride profiles expressed in total chlorides are evaluated to use in many studies In this study, the capacity of chloride binding in cement matrix was monitored for 150 days and then quantified using the Langmuir isotherm to determine the portions of free chlorides and bound chlorides at given total chlorides and the redistribution of free chlorides. Then, the diffusion of chloride ion in concrete was modeled by considering the binding capacity for the prediction of chloride profiles with the redistribution. The predicted chloride profiles were compared to those obtained from conventional model. It was found that the prediction of chloride profiles obtained by the model has shown slower diffusion than those by the conventional ones. This reflects that the prediction by total chloride may overestimate the ingress of chlorides by neglecting the redistribution of free chlorides caused by the binding capacity of cement matrix. From the evaluation, it is also shown that the service life prediction using the free chloride redistribution model needs different expression for the chloride threshold level which is expressed by the total chlorides in the conventional diffusion model.

  • Deeping on purpose, SAW device may have to function while immersed in a liquid. Those who are familiar with SAW devices would anticipate difficulty since the propagating surface waves will tend to radiate energy into the liquid and hence suffer attenuation. Thus, to design an immerable SAW device, more attention and full information about the wave properites is required to overcome the attenuation and get the highest SAW generation eficiency. Though numerical simulation, the optimal geometry of underwater SAW devices, such as optimal piezoelectric crystal cut, SAW propagation direction and nondimensional wave number(ka) is determined to get the maximum SAW excitation efficiency, the minimum attenuation in propagation and pure mode propagation for all the modes of surface wave propagation. The design technique can be appliedto an arbitrary combination of a piezoelectric layer, a substrate and a liquid medium. In this paper, PZT and PVDF layers and a steel substrate are use for the solid medium. The technique can be easily employed for the design of underwater sensors and actuators for the applications, such as sonar marine antifouling, industrial and medical uses.

  • The subway is one of the most common and important means of transportation in modern society. In order to use the subway safely, tracks are necessary, but trains are prone to derailment and collisions. In order for the train to run safely on the track, the fishplate that connects the line connection is used. The damaged railway was a fishplate for connecting subway lines used for 11 years, and damage analysis and countermeasures were presented. Beach marks were observed on both fracture surfaces, and striations appeared at the range of crack propagation. The damaged part is Cr carbide, which has a higher hardness than the base metal, and is judged to be embrittled and destroyed by fatigue. The SM50C fishplate was subjected to a cyclic stress of about 59% of the upper limit of tensile-compression fatigue limit, but inclusions were the cause of failure. In order to prevent fatigue failure of the SM50C steel fishplate, the occurrence of inclusions should be minimized and processed to have a homogeneous structure when manufacturing the fishplate. In addition, compressive residual stress is given through surface modification such as peening to control crack generation. It is necessary to minimize the change in shape that can become a stress concentration part along with accurate fastening of the bolt, and to design the stress distribution to be as uniform as possible.

  • LNG (liquefied natural gas) is considered the best alternative eco-fuel, and many studies on the LNG fuel system have been performed to use LNG as the fuel for ships. For the LNG fuel supply system, natural gas transfers from the vaporizer to the engine in the gaseous state with a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ and a pressure of 35MPa. Therefore, a structural safety evaluation of the double-walled pipelines considering thermal load is essential. In this article, an uniaxial tensile test for super duplex stainless steel, material for double-walled pipe, according to the annealing time was carried out to analyze the thermal effect. In addition, thermo-structural analysis of the high temperature-high pressure double-walled pipe with fixed supports that are now used widely was carried out to evaluate the structural safety. To minimize stress concentration of the connection point between the support and inner pipe, the shapes of the new type support that can slip through inner pipe were proposed, and the supports which has best structural performance was selected using the results from the thermo-structural analyses of new supports and an analysis of the whole double-walled pipeline was performed to ensure structural safety. These results can be used as a database for the design of double-walled pipelines and sliding support.

  • To investigate the applicability of montmorillonite to capping material for the remediation of contaminated marine sediment, adsorption characteristics of $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ onto montmorillonite were studied in a batch system with respect to changes in contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dose amount, competing anions, adsorbent mixture, and seawater. Sorption equilibrium reached in 1 h at 50 mg/L but 3 h was required to reach sorption equilibrium at 300 mg/L. Freundlich model was more suitable to describe equilibrium sorption data than Langmuir model. The $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ adsorption decreased as pH increased, due to the $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ competition for favorable adsorption site with OH- at higher pH. The presence of anions such as nitrate, sulfate, and bicarbonate had no significant effect on the $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ adsorption onto the montmorillonite. The use of the montmorillonite alone was more effective for the removal of the $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ than mixing the montmorillonite with red mud and steel slag. The $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ adsorption capacity of the montmorillonite was higher in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of calcium ion in seawater. The water tank elution experiments showed that montmorillonite capping blocked well the elution of $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$, which was not measured up to 14 days. It was concluded that the montmirillonite has a potential capping material for the removal of the $PO{_4}{^{3-}}$ from the aqueous solutions.

  • Vibration investigation of fluid-filled functionally graded cylindrical shells with ring supports is studied here. Shell motion equations are framed first order shell theory due to Sander. These equations are partial differential equations which are usually solved by approximate technique. Robust and efficient techniques are favored to get precise results. Employment of the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure gives birth to the shell frequency equation. Use of acoustic wave equation is done to incorporate the sound pressure produced in a fluid. Hankel's functions of second kind designate the fluid influence. Mathematically the integral form of the Langrange energy functional is converted into a set of three partial differential equations. A cylindrical shell is immersed in a fluid which is a non-viscous one. These shells are stiffened by rings in the tangential direction. For isotropic materials, the physical properties are same everywhere where the laminated and functionally graded materials, they vary from point to point. Here the shell material has been taken as functionally graded material. After these, ring supports are located at various positions along the axial direction round the shell circumferential direction. The influence of the ring supports is investigated at various positions. Effect of ring supports with empty and fluid-filled shell is presented using the Rayleigh - Ritz method with simply supported condition. The frequency behavior is investigated with empty and fluid-filled cylindrical shell with ring supports versus circumferential wave number and axial wave number. Also the variations have been plotted against the locations of ring supports for length-to-radius and height-to-radius ratio. Moreover, frequency pattern is found for the various position of ring supports for empty and fluid-filled cylindrical shell. The frequency first increases and gain maximum value in the midway of the shell length and then lowers down. It is found that due to inducting the fluid term frequency result down than that of empty cylinder. It is also exhibited that the effect of frequencies is investigated by varying the surfaces with stainless steel and nickel as a constituent material. To generate the fundamental natural frequencies and for better accuracy and effectiveness, the computer software MATLAB is used.
