  • Modular structural systems have been used increasingly for low- and mid-rise structures such as school and apartment buildings. Studies have recently been conducted on the application of the modular structural system to high-rise buildings. To provide sufficient resistances and economical construction for the high-rise modular structural system, a composite unit modular structure was proposed. In this study, the strength of the non-symmetric composite column for the proposed composite unit modular structure was investigated through a series of tests. The experimental study focused on the effect of the slenderness of the column, eccentricity, and through bars on the strength of such a column. Design equations for the non-symmetric column for a modular unit structure were also proposed. From the results, it was found that the proposed design equations provide reasonable strength prediction of the non-symmetric composite column for the modular unit structure.

  • The paper is presented experimental study results on bond stress between profiled steel and concrete in Profiled SPC(Profiled Steel Plate Concrete) rectangular steel tubes through an experimental program in which 13 pull-out specimens were tested. Advantages and class of composite members and current problems of construction work are noted, past research of PSSC is described. An experimental study is described and evaluated. The bond capacity is interrelated with slip at the steel concrete interface. The factors influencing the mechanism of bond stress transfer were the cross section shape, length/diameter, diameter/thickness and environmental parameters (temperature, moisture). The results of experimental program indicated that the force transfer could be characterized into two regions The first region was governed by bond with no relative slip between the profiled steel and concrete. The second region occurs after the chemical debonding. Bond stress transfer in this region was governed by frictional resistance between profiled steel and concrete and cross section shapes. The important factors influencing the magnitude of frictional resistance are the profiled steel shapes, length/diameter and environmental parameters. (temperature, moisture)

  • This study is the analytical review on the inelastic region of CRC column strength curve. The inelastic region of CRC column strength curve is based on the Bleich theory and the maximum residual stress of $0.5{\sigma}_y$. This is somewhat conservative by considering the fact that the maximum residual stress of $0.3{\sigma}_y$ is well known. This study proposes column strength curve for nonlinear behavior of hot rolled structural steel members under axial force and tangent modulus Et, with the maximum residual stress of $0.3{\sigma}_y$ and compares them with those of CRC. The stress of the inelastic column under axial compression exceeds proportional limits and reaches yielding point before applied load render the column bent. The column strength curve that depends on gradually yielding state of section needs to be reviewed. In this study, it is derived that the critical load formular according to material yielding with the maximum residual stress of $0.5{\sigma}_y$ and compared with CRC column design curve.

  • Recently, in order to realization of construction and economical saving, various studies are progressing. Also, the study on RCS system which is consisted of reinforced concrete column and steel beam is progressing actively. Actually, however, resisting mechanism of panel zone is influenced by transverse beams when the stress transfers inner panel to outer panel but existing literature didn't reflect the effect of transverse beams. This paper is to analyze the test result of five inner beam-column joints specimen with a variable such as web, flange thickness of transverse beam and face bearing plate(FBP) for RCS systems were tested under cyclic loadings conforming to NEHRP recommendation to investigate the effect of transverse beams and the structural performance of beam-column joints. From the test result, it was shown that transverse beams are effective to enhance the shear strength and structural performance of beam-column joints.

  • In this study, the method to predict the lateral response by using strain data is presented on the steel moment frame. For this, the reliability of the proposed method by applying the example of five-story frame structure were verified. Using the strain value of columns, it predicted the lateral response of structure. It is assumed that all of four strain sensors for one column set up and the strain responses of both end of the column are utilized. The lateral response of member is calculated by using the slope deflection method. Also, using the acceleration response of the one layer, the stiffness of the rotation spring located in the supporting point is predicted. As a result, it was effective to understand the lateral displacement and acceleration responses and to predict local damage and location.

  • This paper deals with the influence of behavior of a variety of cable elements on the limit strength of steel cable-stayed bridges. The softening plastic-hinge model, which is represented in this study for the limit strength evaluation of the example bridge, considers both geometric and material nonlinearites. Geometric nonlinearity of beam-column members are accounted by using stability function, and material nonlinearity - by using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function. Cable sag effect is considered for cable members. The result of this study shows that the limit strength of the example bridge using the equivalent of elasticity for truss straight elements is smaller than those using the cable or the catenary elements.

  • Cyclic loading tests for a total of nine test specimens were performed to evaluate the seismic performance of the exposed steel column-base plate connections. From the tests, flexural strength, deformation capacity, energy dissipation, and initial stiffness were investigated. The primary test parameters were the thickness of base-plate, embedment length of anchor bolt, the presence of hook, and rib plates. Test results showed that flexural behavior of column base-plate connection was substantially affected by the base-plate thickness, embedment length and the number of anchor bolts. On the other hand, the effect of rib plates on the increase of the flexural performance was not observed. The initial stiffness of the test specimens was about 15% of the flexural stiffness obtained by assuming that the support is fixed. As a result, even if the exposed column base-plate is designed in accordance with current design recommendations, in case that bond strength between concrete and the anchor bolts is not sufficient, the base-plate connection showed an unaccceptable load-displacement behavior.

  • In order to investigation splitting bond strength of the deformed longitudinal reinforcing bars in the R C members strengthened laterally with the external steel-band, a total 9 sets of test re-bars with and without active confining force given by the external steel-band are pulled monotonically until failure. Test results indicate that the bond strength becomes higher with the increase in number of steel-band sets and their initial stress magnitude. This is due to the active confining force given by the steel-band, and passive confining forces given by the steel-band and transverse reinforcements, in which the passive confinement effect varies depending on the magnitude of active confining force. An equation to estimate the splitting bond strengths for the R C members strengthened laterally with the external steel-band is developed based on the several experimental results of the present study.

  • In this study, the anchoring performance of 57mm headed bars anchored at the external beam-column joint under cyclic loading was evaluated. A total of 6 external beam-column joint test specimens were planned, and anchorage performance was evaluated by setting concrete compressive strength, side covering thickness, lateral reinforcement ratio, and fracture type as major experimental variables. As result of cyclic loading test, it was found that the factors that had the greatest influence on the anchoring capacity of the large-diameter headed bar anchored at the joint were the side cover thickness and the transverse reinforcing bar. It was confirmed that the 57mm large-diameter headed bar anchored at the external beam-column joint showed sufficient anchoring capacity even under cyclic loading.

  • Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns (4.5 aspect ratio) were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The selected test variables are longitudinal steel ratio (2.017%, 3.161%), transverse steel ratio, and axial load ratio (0, 0.07, 0.15). Volumetric ratio of spirals of all the columns is 0.335~0.894% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 39.7~122.3% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The final objectives of this study are to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, steel fracture, etc. In this paper, describes mainly failure behavior, strength degradation behaviour, displacement ductility of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variables.
