  • In this paper we analyzed bulging condition which affect the quality of continuous casting steel by using the numerical analytic method. First solidification analyses are performed for each cooling zones. Solidification analysis are carried out by one-dimensuional finite difference method. The bulging deformation of cast slab has been calculated with a two-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element model. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. From this study the effects of the process variables such as casting speed cooling condition roll pitch are examined. The results from these analyses would be able to apply to the design of continuous casting process.

  • In the sand casting process, the flow of liquid metal affects the quality of casting products and their die life. To determine the optimal bush part design process, this study performed various analyses using commercial finite element analysis S/W. The simulation focused on the molten metal behaviors during the mold filling and solidification stages of sand casting. This study aims to develop methods to reduce the cost and increase the tool life of the continuous hot zinc plating roll.

  • This paper presents a control method to maintain stable mold level for unsteady bulging in high speed casting. The stabilizing mold level is an important factor to get high quality products. But, for various reasons, there are several disturbance factors which make mold level unstable. Bulging is one of disturbance factors and considered for the current stage of study. We design a disturbance observer to attenuate the effect of bulging which is periodic mold level disturbance. Since the period of bulging varies with the casting speed, the parameters of disturbance observer are changed by the casting speed. Simulation is illustrated to demonstrate stable performance of the proposed method in comparison with a previous method in a variable operating frequency.

  • Recently, to shorten construction periods and reduce labor costs, the need for a corrugated beam form in the RC structure is being emphasized. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the deformation performance of SY Beam, a newly developed corrugated beam form work, during concrete casting. The standard cross-sectional shape of SY Beam was determined by modeling the deck structure of various thicknesses using the MIDAS GEN program. As a result, the cross-sectional dimensions of the SY Beam were determined to be 400mm and 450mm in width and height, respectively. A total of three SY Beam specimens were fabricated using steel plate thicknesses of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2mm. The load conditions applied during casting concrete at the actual site are reflected. The vertical and horizontal displacements of the SY beam were measured during concrete casting. As a result, the vertical displacement showed a tendency to decrease as the thickness increased. Considering both vertical and horizontal displacement, the case with steel plate thickness of 1.2mm is the safest and most immediately applicable to the field. In the future, to secure manufacturability, constructability, and economics, the optimum steel plate thickness should be derived, and additional analysis and experimental studies for 1.05, 1.1, and 1.15mm are required.

  • In this paper the modeling and control of a twin roll strip caster is investigated. Mathematical models for the strip casting process are obtained by analyzing five critical areas such that the molten steel level in the pool, solidification process, roll separating force and torque, roll dynamics including hydraulic actuators, and roll drive system. A two-level control strategy is proposed. At lower level, three local subsystems are independently feedback-controlled by suitable local controllers which perform well to the behaviors of each subsystem. They are a variable structure control of the molten steel level in the pool, an adaptive predictive control of the roll gap which is directly related to the strip thickness, and an $H^{\infty}$ control of the roll drive system. At higher level, all reference signals to the lower level subsystems are generated by an optimal controller in the perspective of regulating the strip thickness and roll separating force. Simulations are provided..

  • Material degradation should be considered to assess integrity and residual life of high temperature equipments. However, the property data reflecting degradation are not sufficient for practical use. In this study, mechanical properties of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V casting steel generally used for turbine casing were measured and variation of microstructure was observed. Degradation was simulated by isothermal heat treatment.

  • This study demonstrated the feasibility of tape casting method to fabricate soda borosilicate glass-coated stainless steel electrostatic chucks(ESC) for low temperature semiconductor processes. The glass coatings on the stainless steel substrates ranged from $100{\mu}m$ to $150{\mu}m$ thick. The adhesion of the glass coatings was found to be excellent such that it was able to withstand moderate impact tests and temperature cycling to over $300^{\circ}C$ without cracking and delamination. The electrostatic clamping pressure generally followed the theoretical voltage-squared curve except at elevated temperatures and higher applied voltages when deviations were observed to occur. The deviation is due to increased leakage current at higher temperature and applied voltage as the electrical resistivity drops.

  • In this paper, an effective design procedure was proposed to design the rib of die structure for auto-body member with ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) having ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1.5 GPa. From analysis results of the die structure, structural safety of the die was evaluated with information such as displacement and von-Mises stress. It was concluded that the casting part could be designed in order to reduce tool deformation. A design guideline of the die structure was proposed, especially for the rib structure in the casting part with an optimization scheme and local reinforcement concept. Simulation result following the design guideline fully explained that stability of the tool structure could be obtained simultaneously with weight minimization.
