Slim floor system using deep decks has been developed and employed in Europe to reduce the floor height of steel structures. Although long span buildings involving the issue of reducing floor height are being increasingly built in Korea, employing deep decks in more than 7m long span structures is likely to cause problems associated with excessive deflection. This study is applied to the long-span concrete casting of the deep deck plate usability of deflection due to bending and torsional instability of open cross-section, as a way to improve the problem of cap plates are suggested, and the optimum length of reinforcement and location are derived from theoretic estimation. The cap plates are placed on the deep decks with regular intervals to overcome the instability of open sections, improve the stiffness of the sections and control the deflection at the centers. The improvement in flexural capacity associated with the location of the cap plates and the length of reinforcement are verified through analysis and test.
The use of soft magnetic materials have been increasing in the various industrial fields according to the increasing demand for high performance, automatic, miniaturing equipments in the recent our life. In this study, we investigated the effect of factors on the core loss and magnetic properties of electrical steel and soft magnetic composites. Furthermore, we reviewed the major efforts to reduce the core loss and improve the soft magnetic properties in the two main soft magnetic materials. Domain purification which results from reduced density of defects in cleaner electrical steels is combined with large grains to reduce hysteresis loss. The reduced thickness and the high electrical conductivity reduce the eddy current component of loss. Furthermore, the coating applied to the surface of electrical steel and texture control lead to improve high permeability and low core loss. There is an increasing interest in soft magnetic composite materials because of the demand for miniaturization of cores for power electronic applications. The SMC materials have a broad range of potential applications due to the possibility of true 3-D electromagnetic design and higher frequency operation. Grain size, sintering temperature, and the degree of porosity need to be carefully controlled in order to optimize structure-sensitive properties such as maximum permeability and low coercive force. The insulating coating on the powder particles in SMCs eliminates particle-to-particle eddy current paths hence minimizing eddy current losses, but it reduces the permeability and to a small extent the saturation magnetization. The combination of new chemical composition with optimum powder manufacturing processes will be able to result in improving the magnetic properties in soft magnetic composite materials, too.
The lubricant tribological characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ fiber and SiC particle hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) fabricated by squeeze casting method was investigated using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The wear tests of the MMCs were performed according to fiber/particle hybrid ratio in the planar-random (PR) and normal (N) orientations sliding against a counter steel disk at a fixed speed and $25\;kg_f$ loading under different sliding distances and temperatures. The test results showed that the wear behavior of MMCs varied with fiber orientation and hybrid ratio. At room temperature, the lubricant wear behavior of F20P0 unhybrid PR-MMCs was superior to that of N-MMCs while the hybrid composites exhibited the reverse lubricant wear behavior. It was also revealed that the wear resistance of PR-MMCs was superior to that of the N-MMCs due to the joint action of reinforcements and lubricant film between the friction surfaces at an elevated temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ for both fiber only and hybrid cases. In case of $150^{\circ}C$, although the trend of weight loss was similar to that of others, the wear resistance of PR-MMCs was better than that of N-MMCs for hybrid MMCs.
The effects of Ti, B and Zr on grain refinement and castability were investigated in Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Mn-0.15wt%Fe alloy. Measurement of cooling curve and micro-structure observation were performed to analyze the effects of the addition of minor elements Ti, B and Zr during solidification. The prominence of effect on grain refinement was in increasing order for Ti, Zr and B element. Fine grain size and an increase of the crystallization temperature for ${\alpha}$-Al solution were evident as the amount of addition elements increased in this study. Addition of 0.15wt% Ti was most effective for grain refinement, and the resulting grain size of ${\alpha}$-Al solution for shell mold and steel mold were $72.3{\mu}m$ and $23.5{\mu}m$, respectively. Fluidity and shrinkage tests were perform to evaluate the castability of the alloy. Maximum fluidity length and minimum ratio of micro shrinkage were recorded for 0.15wt% Ti addition due to the effect of the finest grain size.

In the steel & iron processing line, some characters are marked for the material management in the surface of material. This paper describes about the developed results of vision system for the recognition of material management characters, which was included in the slab image. Our vision system for the character recognition includes that CCD camera system which acquire slab image, optical transmission system which transmit captured image to the long distance, input and output system for the interface with existing system and monitoring system for the checking of recognition results. We have installed our vision system at the continuous casting line and tested. Also, we have performed inspection of durability, reliability and recognition rate. Through the testing, we have confirmed that our system have high recognition rate, 97.4%.

Estimation of the residual strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams has been studied from experimental and theoretical perspectives. The former is arduous as it involves casting beams of various sizes, which are then subjected to various degrees of corrosion damage. The latter are static; hence cannot be generalized as new coefficients need to be re-generated for new cases. This calls for dynamic models that are adaptive to new cases and offer efficient generalization capability. Computational intelligence techniques have been applied in Construction Engineering modeling problems. However, these techniques have not been adequately applied to the problem addressed in this paper. This study extends the empirical model proposed by Azad et al. (Mag Concr Res 62(6):405-414, 2010), which considered all the adverse effects of corrosion on steel. We proposed four artificial neural networks (ANN) models to predict the residual flexural strength of corroded RC beams using the same data from Azad et al. (2010). We employed two modes of prediction: through the correction factor ($C_f$) and through the residual strength ($M_{res}$). For each mode, we studied the effect of fixed and random data stratification on the performance of the models. The results of the ANN models were found to be in good agreement with experimental values. When compared with the results of Azad et al. (2010), the ANN model with randomized data stratification gave a $C_f$-based prediction with up to 49 % improvement in correlation coefficient and 92 % error reduction. This confirms the reliability of ANN over the empirical models.

In this study, Mg-Zn alloys are investigated in terms of their thermal properties after an addition of Cu. Al element is added to improve the mechanical properties and castability in general case. However, it was excluded here because it significantly decreases the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, Zn was added as a major element, which had less influence on reducing the conductivity and can complement the mechanical properties as well. Cu was also added, and it improved the heat transfer characteristics as the amount was increased. The composition ranges of Zn and Cu are 6 wt.% and 0~1.5 wt.%, respectively. Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy was prepared by a gravity casting method using a steel mold and then the thermal conductivity and the microstructure of the as-cast material were investigated. By measuring the density_(${\rho}$), specific heat_(Cp) and thermal diffusivity_(${\alpha}$), the thermal conductivity_(${\lambda}$) was calculated by the equation ${\lambda}={\rho}{\cdot}Cp{\cdot}{\alpha}$. As the amount of Cu increased in the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, the heat transfer characteristics were improved, resulting in a synergistic effect which is slow when the added Cu exceeds 1 wt.%. In order to investigate the relative thermal conductivity/emission of the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, AZ91 and AZ31 were experimentally evaluated and compared using a separate test equipment. As a result, the Mg-6Zn-1.5Cu alloy when compared to AZ91 showed improvements in the thermal conductivity ranging from 30 to 60% with a nearly 20% improvement in the thermal emission.
Cu-added SKD11 was manufactured through the casting process and the effects of Cu addition with different contents (0, 1, 2 and 3 wt%) and aging treatment on microstructure, mechanical characteristics such as tensile strength and hardness, and thermal conductivity were investigated. The microstructure was analyzed by FE-SEM and XRD, the mechanical characteristics by Rockwell hardness tester and Tensile tester, and the thermal conductivity by Laser flash. As a result, SKD11 containing Cu had higher hardness than as-received SKD11. The hardness of as-cast SKD11 containing 1 wt% Cu was 42.4 HRC, whereas the hardness of asreceived SKD11 cast alloy was 19.5 HRC, indicating that the hardness was greatly improved when Cu was added. In the case of tensile strength, Cu-added SKD11 cast alloy had lower tensile strength than as-received SKD11, and the tensile strength tended to increase as Cu content increased. After heat treatment, however, tensile strength of as-received SKD11 was significantly increased, whereas in the case of Cu-added SKD11, as the Cu contents increased, the tensile strength increased less and even reduced at 3 wt% Cu. The thermal conductivity of Cu-added SKD11 cast alloy was about 13 W m-1 K-1, which was lower than that of the asreceived SKD11 cast alloy (28 W m-1 K-1). After the heat treatment, however, the thermal conductivity of as-received SKD11 was reduced, while the thermal conductivity of the SKD11 added with Cu was increased. Thermal conductivity was generally larger with less Cu content, and this tendency became more pronounced after heat treatment.
Effects of $CaCN_2$ addition on the grain refinement in the AM60 magnesium ingots were investigated. The effects of the $CaCN_2$ are estimated with different inoculation temperatures, inoculation contents, and holding time to find out the optimum condition. AM60 alloy was melted in the low carbon steel crucible by cylindrical electric furnace under an argon atmosphere. The melting and casting apparatus is specially designed for magnesium alloys. The grain size of AM60 magnesium alloy decreased significantly with an increase in $CaCN_2$ content and, at 0.8 wt% $CaCN_2$ or more, grain size becomes constant at about $85 {\mu}m$. The optimum condition was obtained in the 0.8 wt% $CaCN_2$ for holding molten metal of 30 min. at the temperature of $710^{\circ}C$. The tensile properties of AM60 magnesium alloys were improved due to grain refinement by addition of $CaCN_2$. In the optimum condition, the yield strength, tensile strength and elongation were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=107 MPa$, ${\sigma}_{T.S}=234 MPa$ and e=14.2%. The variation of stress with strain obeyed the relationship of the ${\sigma}=K{\varepsilon}^n$. The strain-hardening exponent, n and strength coefficient, K obtained in the 0.8 wt% $CaCN_2$ added AM 60 magnesium alloy were n=0.21 and K=390 MPa.

The fatigue crack growth model is derived and the retardation model is proposed. The fatigue crack growth model considers the residual plastic stretch on the crack surface which results from the plastic deformation at the tip of fatigue crack. The fatigue crack growth rate is calculated by using the cumulative fatigue damage and plastic strain energy in the material elements at the crack tip. This model gives the crack growth rate in reasonable agreement with test data for aluminum alloy AL6061-T651 and 17-4PH casting steel. The fatigue crack growth retardation model is based on the residual plastic stretch produced from a tensile overload which reduced the plastic strain range of the following load cycles. A strip-yield model of a crack tip plasticity is used for the calculation of a plastic zone size. The proposed retardation model characterized the observed features and delayed retardation of the fatigue crack growth under tensile overload.
