  • Adiabatic shear bands have been observed in the serrated chip during high strain rate metal cutting process of medium carbon steel and titanium alloy The recent microscopic observations have shown that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the narrow adiabatic shear bands. However the conventional flow stress models such as the Zerilli-Armstrong model and the Johnson-Cook model, in general, do not predict the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the shear bands and the thermal softening effects accompanied by DRX. In the present study, a strain hardening and thermal softening model is proposed to predict the adiabatic shear localized chip formation. The finite element analysis (FEA) with this proposed flow stress model shows that the temperature of the shear band during cutting process rises above 0.5Τ$_{m}$. The simulation shows that temperature rises to initiate dynamic recrystallization, dynamic recrystallization lowers the flow stress, and that adiabatic shear localized band and the serrated chip are formed. FEA is also used to predict and compare chip formations of two flow stress models in orthogonal metal cutting with AISI 1045. The predictions of the FEA agreed well with the experimental measurements.s.

  • The researches related to active control systems utilizing superelastic shape memory alloys (SMA) have been recently conducted to reduce critical damage due to lateral deformation after severe earthquakes. Although Superelastic SMAs undergo considerable inelastic deformation, they can return to original conditions without heat treatment only after stress removal. We can expect the mitigation of residual deformation owing to inherent recentering characteristics when these smart materials are installed at the part where large deformation is likely to occur. Therefore, the primary purpose of this research is to develop concentrically braced frames (CBFs) with superelastic SMA bracing systems and to evaluate the seismic performance of such frame structures. In order to investigate the inter-story drift response of CBF structures, 3- and 6-story buildings were design according to current design specifications, and then nonlinear time-history analyses were performed on numerical 2D frame models. Based on the numerical analysis results, it can be comparatively verified that the CBFs with superelastic SMA bracing systems have more structural advantages in terms of energy dissipation and recentering behavior than those with conventional steel bracing systems.

  • The effects of the heat input and preheat/interpass temperatures on the tensile strength and impact toughness of multipass welded weld metal were investigated and interpreted in terms of the recovery of the alloying elements and microstructure. Increases in both the heat input and preheat/interpass temperatures decreased the tensile strength of the weld metal. A lower recovery of alloying elements, especially Mn and Si, and smaller area fraction of acicular ferrite in the weld metal were observed in higher heat input welding, resulting in a lower tensile strength. In contrast, only a microstructure difference was observed at a higher preheat/interpass temperature. The impact toughness of the weld metal gradually increased with an increase in the heat input because of the lower tensile strength. However, it decreased again when the heat input was larger than 45 kJ/cm because of the much smaller area fraction of acicular ferrite. No effect of the preheat/interpass temperature on the impact toughness was observed. The formation of a weld metal heat-affect zone showed little effect on the impact toughness of the weld metal in this experiment.

  • Database for the damage reference by armor piercing bullet test was established for both tube and plate specimens having a range of thickness. As the inclined angles of hit are increasing, it has been found that penetration damage diameter tends to increases accordingly in both specimen of the tube and plate, and such penetration damage diameter on the rear side becomes bigger than those on the front side. The tube specimen showed that the damage becomes bigger when central areas rather than the peripheral were hit. Through the plate test, it also has been found that the penetration ballistic limit for Al alloy is about 25.4mm and that of stainless steel about 12.7mm. From the fatigue analysis results using the database for damage reference, it has been identified whether the safety requirements of military aircraft could be met.

  • Presented are the formation of iron oxide layers on evaporator tubes in an actual fossil power plant operated under all volatile treatment (AVT) condition and an experimental simulation of iron oxide formation in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions. After actual operations for 12781 and 36326 hr in the power plant, two iron oxide layers of magnetite on the evaporator tubes were found: a continuous inner layer and a porous outer layer. The experimental simulation (i.e., artificial corrosion in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions at 100 ppm level for 100 hr) reveals that ferrous ions turn the continuous inner oxide layer on tube metal to cracks and pores, while ferric ions facilitate the production of porous outer oxide layer consisting of large crystallites. Based on a comparison of the oxide layers produced in the experimental simulation with those observed on the actually used tubes, we propose possible routes for oxid layer formation schematically. In addition, the limits of the proposed corrosion routes are discussed in detail.

  • In relation to a non-destructive evaluation of irradiation damage of micro-structure of interstitial, void and dislocation, the changes in the hysteresis loop and Barkhausen noise amplitude and the harmonics frequency due to neutron irradiation were measured and evaluated. The Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel of reactor pressure vessel was irradiated to a neutron fluence of $2.3\times10^{19}n/cm^2$ $(E\ge1MeV)$ at $288^{\circ}C.$The saturation magnetization of neutron irradiated metal did not change. Neutron irradiation caused the coercivity to increase, whereas susceptibility to decrease. The amplitude of Barkhausen noise parameters associated with the domain wall motion were decreased by neutron irradiation. The spectrum of Barkhausen noise was analyzed with an applied frequency of 4Hz and 8Hz, and a sampling time of 50 $\mu$ sec and 20 $\mu$ sec. The harmonic frequency of Joule effect shows 4Hz, 8Hz, 12Hz and 16Hz reflected from an unirradiated specimen. On the contrary, the harmonic frequency disappeared for the irradiated specimen. Harmonic frequency of induced voltage of sinusoidal magnetic field And Spectrum of Barkhausen noise on material is determined.

  • Metallic dialkyldithiophosphates are widely used in lubricating oils as antioxidant and antiwear agents. Zinc DDTP are used most frequently in lubricating oil. Zinc, lead, tin and cobalt DDTP were prepared with primary and secondary alkyl groups. The effects of oxidation, thermal stability, metal corrosion and antiwear of each metallic DDTP prepared were studied. Based on the results, cobalt DDTP has a significant effect of antiwear on chrome alloy steel comparing with the other metallic DDTP. Also cobalt DDTP has a characteristic property of thermal sensitivity in its color, which was shown by the color change from brown to blue over a certain temperature. Another phenomenon obtained was that all metallic DDTP initiates the effect of antioxidation at the time of reaching to a certain effective acid concentration in lubricating oil.

  • Amino-carboxyl acid as a complexing agent in acid copper sulfate solution was utilized to improve the adhesion of immersion copper layer for steel wire. According to the tape test results, regardless of alloy composition of the wire, the adhesion of immersion copper layer was improved with the addition of amino-carboxyl acid. The incorporation of H and Fe in the plating layer was analyzed by TOF-SIMS. The H and Fe were detected at the entire coating layer without any addition of amino-carboxyl acid. However, with addition of amino-carboxyl acid, the H and Fe were scarcely detected at the coating layer.

  • The optimization of the cladding parameters was studied to maximize the deposition efficiency in the laser cladding using a low power pulsed Nd:YAG laser. STS304 stainless steel plate and Co alloy powder were used as a substrate and powder for cladding, respectively. The six cladding parameters were selected through preliminary experiments and their effects on the deposition efficiency were analyzed statistically. Experiments were designed and carried out using the Taguchi experimental method using a L18 orthogonal array. It was found from the results of analysis of variance(ANOVA) that the powder feed position and powder feed angle had the most significant effects on the deposition efficiency, but the powder feed rate and laser focal position had nearly no effects. The deposition efficiency could be maximized at 0mm of the powder feed position and 50o of the powder feed angle in the experimental range. From this experimental analysis, a new laser cladding head with 20o of the powder feed angle was designed and manufactured. With a new laser cladding head, the highest deposition efficiency of 12.2% could be obtained.

  • Applicability of $T_{\delta}$ proposed by Shin et al as an instability parameter for ductile material is investigated, Both general fracture test and instability fracture test are performed using compact tension specimens of structural alloy steel(SCM4), The values of ( $T_{\delta}$)$_{app}$(applied tearing modules) estimated from the real load vs. crack growth curve measured from experiments are compared with those estimated from the limit load vs. crack growth curve. The results are:(1) the $T_{\delta}$ parameter may be used as a crack instability parameter:(2) the use of ( $T_{\delta}$)$_{app}$ estimated from the load-crack growth curve, proposed in this study is reasonably justified.ified.d.
