  • A method to determine directly $J_{IC}$ from load-displacement curve without measuring crack growth amount is studied. A method to use key curve in determination of $J_{IC}$ is also considered. The values of $J_{IC}$ obtained from the above methods are compared with that obtained from the ASTM standard test method (E813). By performing experiments using both compact-tension specimen and three-point-bending specimen of a structural alloy steel SCM4, it is shown that the methods proposed here may be used in determination of $J_{IC}$.

  • The 3-D FEM analysis for simulating the stamping operation of planar anisotropic sheet metals with arbitrarily-shaped tools is introduced. An implicit, incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation with a rigid-viscoplastic constitutive equation is employed. Contact and friction are considered through the mesh-normal, which compatibly describes arbitrary tool surfaces and FEM meshes without depending on the explicit spatial derivatives of tool surfaces. The consistent full set of governing relations, comprising equilibrium equation and mesh-normal geometric constraints, is appropriately linearized. The linear triangular elements are used for depicting the formed sheet, based on membrane approximation. Barlat's non-quadratic anisotropic yield criterion(strain-rate potential) is employed, whose in-plane anisotropic properties are taken into account with anisotropic coefficients and non-quadratic function parameter. The planar anisotropic finite element formulation is tested with the numerical simulations of the stamping of an automotive hood inner panel and the drawing of a hemispherical punch. The in-plane anisotropic effects on the formability of both mild steel and aluminum alloy sheet metals are examined.

  • Adiabatic shear bands have been observed in the serrated chip during high strain rate metal cutting process of medium carbon steel and titanium alloy. The recent microscopic observations have shown that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the narrow adiabatic shear bands. However the conventional flow stress models such as the Zerilli-Armstrong model and the Johnson-Cook model, in general, do not predict the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the shear bands and the thermal softening effects accompanied by DRX. In the present study, a strain hardening and thermal softening model is proposed to predict the adiabatic shear localized chip formation. The finite element analysis (FEA) with this proposed flow stress model shows that the temperature of the shear band during cutting process rises above 0.5T$\sub$m/. The simulation shows that temperature rises to initiate dynamic recrystallization, dynamic recrystallization lowers the flow stress, and that adiabatic shear localized band and the serrated chip are formed. FEA is also used to predict and compare chip formations of two flow stress models in orthogonal metal cutting with AISI 1045. The predictions of the FEA agreed well with the experimental measurements.

  • In this research, the friction and wear characteristic behaviors of coating materials of TiAlN and CrAlN were investigated. The wear test was conducted in air and un-lubricated state using the reciprocating friction wear tester. Temperature were 50 and $120^{\circ}C$, and load were 3, 7, and 11 kgf for tests. By comparing the coefficient of friction and observing the wear microstructure, the friction and wear characteristic behaviors of TiAlN and CrAlN coating layers on SKD61 were investigated. The coefficient of friction of CrAlN coating was lower than that of TiAlN at all conditions. Therefore, CrAlN was suggested to be more advantageous coating than TiAlN for the extrusion mold of aluminum.

  • It is investigated that internal defect of planetary gear which consists of two gears with different number of teeth on both side. The internal defect, central burst, begin to form at the place of adiabatic shear band which usually has maximum ductile fracture value during the forming operation, forward and backward extrusion. It makes the plastic forming of planetary gear difficult. The prediction of defect to minimize the cost to produce the planetary gear. The finite element simulation code DEFORM is applied to analyze the defects. In the analysis, the toothed gears are assumed as axisymmetric cylinders whose diameters are equal to those of pitch circles of the each gears. Experiments were carried out with the SCM415 alloy steel as billet material and AIDA 630-ton knuckle-joint press. The calculated results and experimental inspections are compared to design a die and blank without defects and the results are useful to predict the internal defect.

  • It is known that the severest loading condition is the buckling case in the structural design of an outer tie rod. The optimum design of the OTR was suggested considering the buckling performance. The aluminum alloy was investigated as a steel substitute. Then, the structural optimization based on the response surface method and the kriging interpolation method were performed.

  • As the development of industry water quality of river is going to bad because of waste water of an industrial complex and general home agricultural chemicals exhaust of $SO_3$ and CO gas acid rain and so on. Corrosion damage of boiler factory equipment and so forth occur quickly due to using of the polluted water resulting in increasing leak accident. Especially working life of hot water boiler using the polluted water becomes more short and energy loss increases. The cathodic protection method is the most economical and reliable one to prevent corrosion damage of steel structures. Mg-base alloys galvanic anode protection of cathodic protection method is suitable for than application of hot water boiler using water with high specific resistance such as tap water. This paper is studied on the cathodic protection characteristics of how water boiler. In tap water and 0.001mol/$\ell$ NaCl solution the characteristics of anodic polarization of Mg-base alloys galvanic anode and tube material is investigated the measurement of cathodic protection potential according to the time elaspsed is carried out.

  • A complete quantitative understanding of DT has been difficult because the process represents such a broad field of research. The experimental measurement of tool force is a single area of DT which still covers a wide range of possibilities. There are numerous parameters of the process which affect cutting forces. There are also many turnable materials of current interest. To obtain information toward a better understanding of the process, a few cutting parameters and materials were selected for detail study. It was decided that free-oxygen copper and 6061-T6 alloy aluminum would be the primary test materials. There are materials which other workers have also used because of there wide use in reflective applications. The experimental phase of the research project began by designing tests to isolate certain cutting parameters. The parameters chosen to study were those that affected the cross-sectional area of the uncut chip. The specific parameters which cause this area to vary are the depth of cut and infeed per revolution, or feedrates. Other parameter such a tool nose radius and surface roughness were investigated as they became relevant to the research.

  • Wear volume was used generally to analyze the moving state of lubricated machine. But It is difficult of getting the correct wear volume because wear volume of it is progressed always unstably with a large amplitude on working condition. If correct analysis of wear volume on working condition for lubricated machine can be possible, it can be effect on diagnosis of failure condition. The purpose of this study is carried out to analysis friction factors affecting on wear volume for prediction of failure condition of alloy steel for machine structural use by design of experiment. The results show that the most important friction factors affecting on wear volume was applied load, neat sliding distance, sliding speed and materials.

  • Ceramics are significantly used in many industrial applications due to their excellent mechanical and thermal properties such as high temperature strength, low density, high hardness, low thermal expansion, and good corrosion resistive properties, while their disadvantages are brittleness, poor formability and high manufacturing cost. To combine advantages of ceramics with those of metals, they are often used together as one composite component, which necessiates reliable joining methods between metal and ceramic. Direct brazing using an active filler metal has been found to be a reliable and simple technique, producing strong and reliable joints. In this study, the fracture characteristics of Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic joined to ANSI 304L stainless steel with a Ti-Ag-Cu filler and a Cu (0.25-0.3 mm) interlayer are investigated as a function of strain rate and temperature. In order to evaluate a local strain a couple of strain gages are pasted at the ceramic and metal sides near joint interface. As a result the 4-point bending strength and the deflection of interlayer increased at room temperature with increasing strain rate. However bending strength decreased with temperature while deflection of interlayer was almost same. The fracture shapes were classified into three groups ; cracks grow into the metal-brazing filler line, the ceramic-brazing filler line or the ceramic inside.
