  • An improved method is presented to estimate the axial force of a bar member with vibrational measurements based on modified Timoshenko beam theory. Bending stiffness effects, rotational inertia, shear deformation, rotational inertia caused by shear deformation are all taken into account. Axial forces are estimated with certain natural frequency and corresponding mode shape, which are acquired from dynamic tests with five accelerometers. In the paper, modified Timoshenko beam theory is first presented with the inclusion of axial force and rotational inertia effects. Consistent mass and stiffness matrices for the modified Timoshenko beam theory are derived and then used in finite element simulations to investigate force identification accuracy under different boundary conditions and the influence of critical axial force ratio. The deformation coefficient which accounts for rotational inertia effects of the shearing deformation is discussed, and the relationship between the changing wave speed and the frequency is comprehensively examined to improve accuracy of the deformation coefficient. Finally, dynamic tests are conducted in our laboratory to identify progressive axial forces of a steel plate and a truss structure respectively. And the axial forces identified by the proposed method are in good agreement with the forces measured by FBG sensors and strain gauges. A significant advantage of this axial force identification method is that no assumption on boundary conditions is needed and excellent force identification accuracy can be achieved.

  • This paper applies an optimization algorithm for the elastic truss structures. The acceleration technique utilized in this study is the geometric programming method developed by the Operation Research or the applied methematics. The applicability and the efficiency of the algorithm applied in this study are tested for four different trusses. Test results show that the optimum solutions are obtained after only one or seven iterations which is very small compared with other techniques and no oscillation is needed for the convergency. Test rusults also show that the Geometric Programming Method is also effective algorithm for the convergency of the Optimum Solution in case of only being compared with the number of iteration.

  • In the domestic construction industry field nowadays, the usage of deck plates is currently increasing due to the lack of construction workers and the rised in construction cost. However, using deck plates manufactured by thin zinc galvanization in underground structures is criticised because it can lead to increase in maintenance cost caused by rust generation and water leakage. As a solution for this particular problem, deck plates created by Lath and Mortar instead of zinc galvanized steel sheets were developed. This paper deals with the experimental study on flexural behavior of deck plate using metal lath and mortar. Seventeen fullscale specimens were constructed and tested with different type of truss, the diameter of the top and bottom bar, and the thickness of slab. Tests results show that LAMO deck displayed equal performance such as zinc galvanized steel sheets.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose structural technologies on the light-weight composite floor systems in the unit modular and to evaluate structural performance of the composite floor through flexural experiments. The flexural experiments were carried out on total nine specimens(each three type in shape) using steel flat deck and truss deck. From the results of test, all specimens showed the same failure patterns which exhibited deflection at the center of the specimens due to flexural deformation before concrete crushing at the upper of specimens. Also, we know that the proposed floors satisfied in serviceability and would be safe sufficiently. The ratio of experimental yield load by theoretical nominal load was the distribution of 0.86 to 1.27 with an average 1.04. Coefficient of variation in distribution showed good agreement.

  • In this paper, a geometric nonlinear analysis procedure of the beam-column element including multi-noded cable element in extension of companion paper (Kim et al., 2005) is presented. First, a stiffness matrix was derived about the beam-column element that considers the second effect of the initial force supposing the curved shape at each time-step, with Hermitian polynomials as the shape function. Second, the multi-noded cable element was also subjected to the tangent stiffness matrix. To verify the geometric nonlinearity of this newly developed multi-noded cable-truss element, the Innovative Prestressed Support (IPS) system using this theory was analysed by geometric nonlinear method and the results were compared with those produced by linear analysis.

  • The results of diagnostics and analysis of an industrial hall located on the premises of a thermal power plant severely damaged by fire are presented in the paper. The comprehensive failure-related diagnostics, non-destructive and destructive tests of steel and concrete materials, geodetic surveying of selected structural members, numerical modelling, static analysis and reliability assessment were focused on two basic goals: The determination of the current technical condition of the load bearing structure and the assessment of its post fire resistance as well as assessing the degree of damage and subsequent design of reconstruction measures and arrangements which would enable the safe and reliable use of the building. The current mechanical properties of the steel material obtained from the tests and measured geometric characteristics of the structural members with imperfections were employed in finite element models to study the post-fire behaviour of the structure. In order to compare the behaviour of the numerically modelled steel roof truss, subjected to the effects of fire, with the real post-fire response of the damaged structure theoretically obtained resistance, critical temperature and the time at which the structure no longer meets the required reliability criteria under its given loading are compared with real values. A very good agreement between the simulated results and real characteristics of the structure after the fire was observed.

  • The Expo Culture Centre is one of the permanent buildings at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. The main structure has an oval shape and consists of 36 radial cantilever steel trusses with different lengths and inner frames made of concrete-filled rectangular steel tube members. Tuned mass dampers are used to reduce the excessive vibrations of the sixth floor that are caused by human-induced resonance. A three-dimensional analytical model of the system is developed, and its main characteristics are established. A series of field tests are performed on the structure, and the test results show that the vertical vibration frequencies of most structural cantilevers are between 2.5 Hz and 3.5 Hz, which falls in the range of human-induced vibration. Twelve pairs of tuned mass dampers weighing 115 tons total were installed in the structure to suppress the vibration response of the system. These mass dampers were tuned to the vertical vibration frequency of the structure, which had the highest possibility of excitation. Test data obtained after the installation of the tuned mass dampers are used to evaluate their effectiveness for the reduction of the vibration acceleration. An analytical model of the structure is calibrated according to the measured dynamic characteristics. An analysis of the modified model is performed and the results show that when people walk normally, the structural vibration was low and the tuned mass dampers have no effect, but when people run at the structural vibration frequency, the tuned mass dampers can reduce the floor vibration acceleration by approximately 15%.

  • Based on numerical and experimental methods, a systematic structural evaluation of a steel natatorium in service was carried out in detail in this paper. Planning of inspection tasks was proposed firstly according to some national codes in China in order to obtain the economic and reliable results. The field visual inspections and static computation were conducted in turn under in-service environmental conditions. Further a three-dimensional finite element model was developed according to its factual geometry properties obtained from the field inspection. An analytical modal analysis was performed to provide the analytical modal properties. The field vibration tests on the natatorium were conducted and then two different system identification methods were used to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the natatorium. A good correlation was achieved in results obtained from the two system identification methods and the finite element method (FEM). The numerical and experimental results demonstrated that the main structure of the natatorium in its present status is safe and it still satisfies the demand of the national codes in China. But the roof system such as purlines and skeletons must be removed and rebuilt completely. Moreover the system identification results showed that field vibration test is sufficient to identify the reliable dynamic properties of the natatorium. The constructive suggestion on structural evaluation of the natatorium is that periodic assessment work must be maintained to ensure the natatorium's safety in the future.

  • The retractable roof structures have actions of various types of loads and external forces depending on the retraction and operation conditions of the roof in terms of efficiency of control and maintenance as the aspect of structural plan. In particular, there is a need for studies on the establishment of retraction controlled wind velocity to maintain the stable control and usability of roof structure against strong winds or sudden gusts during the retraction of the roof. In this paper, it was intended to provide basic materials for the development of guidelines on the operation and maintenance of domestic retractable buildings with large space by analyzing the factors affecting the retraction controlled wind velocity for the overseas stadiums with the large spatial retractable roof structures where the sliding system was applied on the steel retractable systems. As a result, the controlled wind velocity tends to decrease as the retractable roof area increases. On the other hand, the controlled wind velocity tends to increase as the retraction time increases. In addition, in the space-grid roof structures, the spherical roof structures type showed the average controlled wind velocity of 10m/sec lower than that of 17.3m/sec for curved-roof structure type, and in the curved-roof structure type, the truss roof structure showed the average controlled wind velocity of 8.9m/sec which is lower than that of 17.3m/sec for the space for the space-grid roof structure.
