A modified generalized particle algorithm, MGPA, was suggested to improve the computational efficiency of standard SPH method in numerical analysis of high speed impact behavior. This method uses a numerical failure mechanism than material failure models to describe the target penetration. MGPA algorithm was more effective to describe the impact phenomena and new boundaries produced during the calculation process were well recognized and treated in the target penetration problem of a bullet. When bullet perforation problems were analyzed by this method, MGPA algorithm calculation gives the stable numerical solution and stress oscillation or particle penetration phenomena were not shown. The error range in ballistic velocity limit is less than $2{\sim}13%$ for various target thickness.
In many cases, open-type plate breakwaters use plates with multiple holes; the holes serve as energy dissipaters and weight reducers. Because of the multi-holes configuration, stress concentration should be considered during the design process. Among several design loading conditions, the loads from a possible collision with a man-made vessel or other unexpected events many damage a multi-perforated steel plate. In that case, the structural behavior of a multi-perforated steel plate is quite significant, and is not well understood. This study presents a collision analysis for a multi-perforated steel plate. First, four different perforation topologies (three with circles and one with squares) were selected to investigate the effect of different hole shapes on the structural response. Second, the wave force at a specific site was calculated and loaded onto a steel plate as a static load. The static stresses were used for reference values. Third, two rigid body impacters (cubical & cylindrical) were applied to the steel plates to investigate the transient stress responses. In addition, two different impacting angles ($45^{\circ}\;&\;90^{\circ}$) were selected to investigate the angle effect. From the collision analysis, the significance of the transient stresses was emphasized.

In this study, an experimental research was performed to find the characteristics of the lateral load resistance of perforated steel plates which could be developed to retrofit existing RC framed buildings. The Specimens are tested with variables such as aspect ratio of plate, the ratio of perforation area, and the ratio of perforated diameter to strip which is more than 0.6. The lateral load was applied with displacement control until to reach 3.5% drift ratio. Through the experimental results, it was shown that the maximum strength of all specimens were reached at around 0.5% drift ratio and maintained until 3.5% drift ratio. From results, the modified strength prediction formula was derived with the variable ratio of the perforated diameter to strip. To evaluate seismic retrofit performance of RC frames using perforated steel plate, a simple design process was presented.
Investigations of the commercial aircraft impact effect on nuclear island infrastructures have been drawing extensive attention, and this paper aims to perform the safety assessment of Generation III nuclear power plant (NPP) buildings subjected to typical commercial aircrafts crash. At present Part III, the local damage of the rigid components of aircraft, e.g., engine and landing gear, impacting the steel concrete (SC) structures of NPP containment is mainly discussed. Two typical SC target panels with the thicknesses of 40 mm and 100 mm, as well as the steel cylindrical projectile with a mass of 2.15 kg and a diameter of 80 mm are fabricated. By using a large-caliber air gas gun, both the projectile penetration and perforation test are conducted, in which the striking velocities were ranged from 96 m/s to 157 m/s. The bulging velocity and the maximal deflection of rear steel plate, as well as penetration depth of projectile are derived, and the local deformation and failure modes of SC panels are assessed experimentally. Then, the commercial finite element program LS-DYNA is utilized to perform the numerical simulations, by comparisons with the experimental and simulated projectile impact process and SC panel damage, the numerical algorithm, constitutive models and the corresponding parameters are verified. The present work can provide helpful references for the evaluation of the local impact resistance of NPP buildings against the aircraft engine.

This paper describe inner-collision-characteristics of the ship structural plates when the projectile collides with plate-material using LS-DYNA3D which is general and useful finite element analysis tool in collision problem fields. The series analyses were carried out from high speed(41.56m/s-118.9m/s) to ultrahigh speed(544.05m/s-800m/s). Through these analyses we can approach empirical formula to estimate penetration limit of the ship structural plates with which the projectile of various speed collides.

The impact damage behavior of steel-strengthened concrete panels exposed to explosive loading is investigated. Since real explosion experiments require the vast costs to facilities as well as the blast and impact damage mechanisms are too complicated, numerical analysis has lately become a subject of special attention. However, for engineering problems involving blast wave and fragment impact, there is no single numerical method that is appropriate to the various problems. In order to evaluate the retrofit performance of a steel-strengthened concrete panel subject to blast wave and fragment impact loading, an explicit analysis program, AUTODYN is used in this work. The multi-solver coupling methods such as Euler-Lagrange and SPH-Lagrange coupling method in order to improve efficiency and accuracy of numerical analysis is implemented. The simplified and idealized two dimensional and axisymmetric models are used in order to obtain a reasonable computation running time. As a result of the analysis, concrete panels subject to either blast wave or fragment impact loading without the steel plate are shown the scabbing and perforation. The perforation can be prevented by concrete panels reinforced with steel plate. The numerical results show good agreement with the results of the experiments.

An optimal design of a multi-layered plate structure to endure high-velocity impact has been suggested by using size optimization after numerical simulations. The NET2D, a Lagrangian explicit time-integration finite element code for analyzing high-velocity impact, was used to find the parameters for the optimization. Three different materials such as mild steel, aluminum for a multi-layered plate structure and die steel for the pellet, were assumed. In order to consider the effects of strain rate hardening, strain hardening and thermal softening, Johnson-Cook model and Phenomenological Material Model were used as constitutive models for the simulation. It was carried out with several different gaps and thickness of layers to figure out the trend in terms of those parameters' changes under the constraint, which is against complete penetration. Also, the measuring domain has been shrunk with several elements to reduce the analyzing time. The response surface method based on the design of experiments was used as optimization algorithms. The optimized thickness of each layer in which perforation does not occur has been obtained at a constant velocity and a designated total thickness. The result is quite acceptable satisfying both the minimized deformation energy and the weight criteria. Furthermore, a conceptual idea for topology optimization was suggested for the future work.
This paper describes a study of the collision of hard steel spheres against aluminium thin circular plates at speeds up to 140 m/s. The tests were monitored by a high speed camera and a chronoscope, which allowed the determination of the ballistic limit and the plate deformation pattern. Quasi-static material parameters were obtained from tests on a universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical characterization of two aluminium alloys were conducted in a split Hopkinson pressure bar. Using a damage model, the perforation of the plates was simulated by finite element analysis. Axisymmetric, shell and solid elements were employed with various parameters of the numerical analysis being thoroughly discussed, in special, the dynamic model parameters. A good agreement between experiments and the numerical analysis was obtained.

In this study, high velocity impact tests along with modeling of material behavior and numerical analyses were conducted to predict the dispersion behavior of the debris resulting from a high velocity impact fracture. For the impact tests, two different materials were employed for both the projectile and the target plate - the first setup employed aluminum alloy while the second employed steel. The projectile impacts the target plate with a velocity of approximately 1 km/s were enforced to generate the impact damages in the aluminum witness plate through the fracture debris. It was confirmed that, depending on the material employed, the debris dispersion behavior as well as the dispersion radii on the witness plate varied. A numerical analysis was conducted for the same impact test conditions. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)-finite element (FE) coupled technique was then applied to model the fracture and damage upon the debris. The experimental and numerical results for the diameters of the perforation holes in the target plate and the debris dispersion radii on the witness plate were in agreement within a 5% error. In addition, the impact test using steel was found to be more threatening as proven by the larger debris dispersion radius.
