Kobe Steel, LTD. and Midrex Technologies Inc. jointly developed the FASTMET$\circledR$ process as a steel mill waste recycle technology in which the DRI product meets BF feed material or BOF/EAF feed material requirements. FASTMET(R) process turns value-less wastes into valuable DRI and sellable zinc oxide, and gives the solution for the steel mill wastes recycling from both economical and environmental viewpoints. During the development of the process, Laboratory, Pilot Plant and Demonstration Plant tests were carried out from 1990 to 1998. The first FASTMET(R) commercial plant began operation in April, 2000 and the second commercial plant started in April, 2001 Both commercial plants have proceeded successfully preying that FASTMET$\circledR$ is a suitable process for recycling steel mill waste and for producing DRI as an iron source.

Recently, global market competition of iron and steel products is ever increasing due to over-supply from increased number of industries in rapidly growing countries, such as China, Brazil, and Indonesia. To occupy the big market, major industries are trying to develop high quality, high performance steel products via developing a new iron and steel making process. In other words, development of a new and innovative steel plant is a key to cope with the tough situation. Design and development for the life cycle of iron and steel making plant is very much complex and multi-disciplinary. In this paper, Plant Systems Engineering (PSE), a tailored SE process for industrial plant based on ISO/IEC 15288 is used for the design of Continuous Casting Process (CCP) Plant system. The CCP is a crucial process in steel making plant, whose design technology is occupied by the advanced foreign companies. For the sake of increasing engineering capability for the design of CCP, we applied PSE Process for the renovation of the existing CCP Process. Through the study, we were convinced that the applied method can be used for other plant systems, and SE is really the way of thinking, design, and development of modern complex and multi-disciplinary systems where high risk factors are present throughout the whole life cycle.

Several plasma-sprayed ceramic coatings with two- and three-layers were characterized and tested for the application of cooling tube coatings of oxygen convert gas recovery system (OG cooling system) in the steel making plant. Thermal cycling tests using a torch heating with compressed air cooling were carried out and characterized before and after the tests. The effects of metallic bond coat as well as ceramic top coat were also studied. Possible failure mechanisms with low carbon steel substrate were assessed in term of microstructure, porosity, bond strength, thermal expansion coefficient, and the phase transformation. Finally, the results of field tests at the OG cooling system are presented and discussed their microstructural degradation. Test results have shown that three-layered coatings perform better than two-layered coatings.

Plant engineering industry is considered as a key industry which will drive the future of Korea. However, Korean plant engineering companies have recently made huge losses in overseas businesses and the lack of engineering capability is pointed out as a main cause of this situation. Unlike Korean plant engineering companies, world leading engineering companies such as Flour and Bechtel have their own systems Engineering Standards/Guides ensuring successful fulfillments of the concept and basic design processes. An engineering standard for an organization is an essential means to shorten the time for engineering design, to maintain the engineering quality and to secure the engineering efficiency in the development of the complex system. Korean plant engineering companies'lack of engineering capability comes from the absence of the engineering standard. In the paper, we have developed a steel-making plant engineering standard based on a systems engineering standard. We chose both ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 and NASA SE Handbook as main reference standards. First, we have introduced a life-cycle definition and a physical hierarchy of a general steel-making plant. Then we have introduced detailed engineering processes of each life-cycle stage. The full scope of the study was from the feasibility study to the basic design but in the paper, we have only introduced detailed engineering processes and exit criteria for the feasibility study and the concept design.

Large tubesheet forgings of the steam generator for the 1,400MW nuclear power plant has been developed. Steam Generator is one of the most important structural part for nuclear power plant. It is manufactured by various steel forgings such as shell, head, torus and tubesheet. These steel forgings have been made by open die forging process. After steel melting and ingot making, open die forging has been carried out to get a good quality which means high soundness and homogeniety of the steel forgings by using high capacity hydraulic press. This paper introduced the forging process development and manufacturing experience of large tubesheet forgings which will be used for the steam generator of 1,400MW nuclear power plant.

During the industrial plant system life cycle, required technologies are developed and assessed to analyze their performance, risks and costs. The assessment is called technology readiness assessment (TRA) and the measure of readiness is called technology readiness level (TRL). The TRL consists of 9 levels and through the TRL assessment, the technology to be developed and its components are assigned to their appropriate TRL. TRL assessment should be performed in each life cycle stages to monitor the technology readiness and analyze the potential risks and costs. However, even though the concept of TRL has been largely adopted by numerous organizations and industry, direct and clear assignment of target TRL for each life cycle stage has been overlooked. Direct mapping/assignment of target TRL for each life cycle has benefits as follow: (1) the technical risks condition of each life cycle stage can be better understood, (2) cost incurred if the technology development is failed can be analyzed in each life cycle stage, and (3) more effective decision making because the technology readiness achievement for each life cycle stages is agreed beforehand. In this paper, we propose a steel-making plant system life cycle and TRL assignment to each of the system life cycle stage. By directly assigning target TRL for each life cycle stages, we look forward to a more coordinated (in terms of exit criteria) and highly effective (in terms of technical risks identification and eventually prevent project failure) technology development and assessment processes.

Increase of consumption in limited coal reserves leads prices surging. As a result, iron works which produce products with coal are in difficulties. Accordingly, it is required a lot of research of using non-caking coal that is relatively low cost and has abundant reserves. Direct drying and indirect drying are two major methods of drying the coal. Recently, to minimize the needed calories and to save energy, using fluidbed or fluidizing method is a recent main trend of minimizing the size of the facility and maximizing energy efficiency. However there is also disadvantage such as increasing facility investment because of installing additional facilities in the latter part. In this study, we will have theoretical researches on the indirect drying method with heat exchange system which have been traditionally used. As a result it is expected to increase the efficiency of the facility operation.

This paper introduced open die forging status and investigated forging method of the ultra large steel forgings which is used for the steam generator of 1000MW nuclear power plant. For the same thing. the type of steel forgings consisting steam generator is classified by shell, head, torus and tube sheet. And corresponding forging processes of the steel forgings have been investigated.

This paper introduced the open die forging process and manufacturing experience of large head forgings which can be used for the reactor vessel of 1,000MW nuclear power plant.
