Microstructure and fracture behavior of a multi-phase low-density steel were investigated. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, the microstructure of low-density steel was composed of coarse ferrite grains and elongated bands which include second phases such as austenite, martensite and ${\kappa}$-carbide depending on holding time during isothermal heat treatment. After tensile test, microcracks were observed at martensite or ${\kappa}$-carbide interface in the elongated bands. Coarse ferrite grains showed cleavage fracture behavior regardless of second phase. The cleavage fracture of ferrite could be attributed to their coarse grain size and solute atoms that increase ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of ferrite. Despite of the tendency of cleavage fracture in coarse ferrite grains, a specimen having coarse spheroidized ${\kappa}$-carbide particles in the elongated bands showed high total elongation of 30%. Thus, the easiness of plastic deformation in the elongated band seems to play an important role in retardation of cleavage crack formation in coarse ferrite grains.
In this study high power Nd:YAG laser welding of structural steel was investigated. For the test steel blocks of $50{\times}50{\times}200mm$ were cut and machined, and bead-on-plate weld was made on the machined surface. Argon, nitrogen, helium, dry air or mixed gases were used to find the effect of shielding conditions on the bead formation. Results demonstrated that there were Fe I rich region and Fe II rich region in the laser induced plasma column based on the spectral analysis with S-2000 field spectrometer The Fe I region was located at the root of the column near keyhole opening. On the other hand, Fe II region was found at the middle of the plasma column. In the Nd:YAG laser welding, Fe I region emitted continuum which had peak value at wave length of around 710nm, and Fe II region had the peak at 580nm. In the welding of steel by $CO_2$ laser, however, no continuum was observed. There showed two groups of strong spikes in the $CO_2$ laser welding; the first group was displayed at the wave band of 450-560nm. This spike group emitted stronger intensity of light and sharper peaks than those group at 680-800nm.
A slitter is a sort of machinery to cut sheet materials in rolls continuously in the longitudinal direction. Recently slitter line users have requiring higher quality and precision in products in addition to high productivity. A finite element analysis has been performed to investigate the effect of processing factors on shear planes in the slitting of Shrinkage Band(S,K.B.). For the analysis, Hot-dip 55% aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheets and coils(SAZCC) is selected as a material. The results obtained are that deformation was concentrated along the very narrow zone and the maximum slitting load decreases by increasing the knife clearance. Also effective strain decreases according to the clearance increases.

Three types of piezoelectric sensors to detect acoustic emission signals were developed and characterized. Epicentral displacement and velocity of a plate to have infinite boundary were calculated by convolution between a Green's function and a simulated source time function to show parabolic rising characteristic. The sensor calibration system set up was composed of a steel plate, a glass capillary, an indentor and a load cell indicator The transient elastic signals were detected by the sensors. The results were compared with the theoretical results and Fast Fourier Transformed. As the results, the sensor fabricated using a disk shape of a piezoelectric PZT element showed resonant characteristics. The sensors fabricated using a conical shape PZT element and a PVDF polymer film showed the wide band characteristics for particle displacement and velocity, respectively. The calculated results showed good agreements with the transient responses in the cases of the wide band sensors and it was confirmed that the simulated source time function had been properly assumed.

Active vibration control via inertial mass actuators has been shown as an effective tool to significantly reduce human-induced vertical vibrations, allowing structures to satisfy vibration serviceability limits. However, a lot of practical obstacles have to be solved before experimental implementations. This has motivated simple control techniques, such as direct velocity feedback control (DVFC), which is implemented in practice by integrating the signal of an accelerometer with a band-pass filter working as a lossy integrator. This work provides practical guidelines for the tuning of DVFC considering the damping performance, inertial mass actuator limitations, such as stroke and force saturation, as well as the stability margins of the closed-loop system. Experimental results on a full scale steel-concrete composite structure (behaves similar to a footbridge) with adjustable span are reported to illustrate the main conclusions of this work.

Different test methods were used to measure and compare the loss factor of a steel beam. They are free vibration logarithmic decay method, half-power bandwidth method using narrow-band analysis, wide-band analysis method with inverse FFT. In these tests, specimens are clamped at one end. Free vibration method and half-power bandwidth method gave good results. Effect of vibration pick-ups were tested. We also tried center excitation method but could not obtain loss factor.
Self-catalytic behavior of combustion-synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is evaluated using a double-faced wall stagnation flow burner with a CNT-deposited stainless steel plate wall. CNT formation is observed using field-emission scanning and transmission electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. A self-catalytic behavior of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) shows the enhanced ratio of channel diameter to tube wall thickness and the enhanced intensity ratio of G-band to D-band in Raman spectroscopy, implying that the quality of metal-catalytic, flame-synthesized MWCNTs can be much improved via a CNT self-catalytic flame-synthesis process. Thus, using a DWSF burner through the self-catalytic process has potential in mass production of CNTs having much improved quality.

Adiabatic shear bands have been observed in the serrated chip during high strain rate metal cutting process of medium carbon steel and titanium alloy. The recent microscopic observations have shown that dynamic recrystallization occurs in the narrow adiabatic shear bands. However the conventional flow stress models such as the Zerilli-Armstrong model and the Johnson-Cook model, in general, do not predict the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the shear bands and the thermal softening effects accompanied by DRX. In the present study, a strain hardening and thermal softening model is proposed to predict the adiabatic shear localized chip formation. The finite element analysis (FEA) with this proposed flow stress model shows that the temperature of the shear band during cutting process rises above 0.5T$\sub$m/. The simulation shows that temperature rises to initiate dynamic recrystallization, dynamic recrystallization lowers the flow stress, and that adiabatic shear localized band and the serrated chip are formed. FEA is also used to predict and compare chip formations of two flow stress models in orthogonal metal cutting with AISI 1045. The predictions of the FEA agreed well with the experimental measurements.
Authors propose a new technique using polyethylene film instead of sodium chloride window as a cell material. Nujol mulls, liquids and aqueous solutions are sandwitched between two pieces of polyethylene film which are held between cardboards. Ordinary lead or stainless steel spacers could be used if exact cell thickness is desired. A more elaborate cell can be assembled by injecting samples between two pieces of polyethylene film which are placed between sodium chloride windows of ordinary demountable liquid cell. The absorption bands due to polyethylene and Nujol are compensated by placing the polyethylene film of suitable thickness in the reference beam. The absorption bands due to solvents such as water can also be compensated by the polyethylene film cell sandwitched solvent of suitable thickness in the reference beam. This method would be a simple new technique. Especially this technique may offer a new helpful way for the investigation of the state of substances in aqueous system. Using this technique, authors have observed the appearance of an absorption bands at 3.2 micron, in the spectrum of phenol in aqueous solution, that is absent in the spectrum of phenol in benzene solution. The same absorption band also has been observed in the spectra of aqueous formaldehyde solution and aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution, where the absorption bands due to polyethylene and water are compensated. Although it may be regarded that this absorption band is related to the intermolecular interaction between water and the solute having OH group, that is hydrogen bonding. The exact assignment of this absorption band is out of this work.
