  • This study summarizes the numerical analyses of a Ti alloy deformation under a back extrusion process. Amongst metallic parts in a small propulsion motor case, a Ti-6Al-4V alloy is used extensively. However, the Ti alloy shows a great deal of shear band formation which often leads to a fracture due to a narrow working temperature window. Moreover, the shear band tends to develop over an area where a contact occurs between the hot work piece and the die wall, due to localized cooling. Thus, heating the dies is often required to overcome the deformation localization. Therefore, it becomes necessary to investigate the internal temperature and strain rate distribution during forging process of a Ti alloy. Furthermore, a shear band analysis is peformed using a finite difference scheme and a comparison is made between steel and Ti alloy.

  • Hot-stamping is a method of obtaining ultrahigh-strength steel by simultaneously forming and cooling boron steel in a press die after it has been heated at $900^{\circ}C$ or above. After heat treatment, boron steel has a strength of 1500 MPa or more. This material ensures a high level of quality because it overcomes the spring-back phenomenon, which is a problem associated with high-strength steel materials, and the degree of dimensional precision is improved by 90 or more because of the good formability compared with existing types of steel. In this study, the welding characteristics were identified through the butt and lap welding of hot-stamped steel using a disk laser. Full penetration was obtained at a faster speed with butt welding compared to lap welding, and a white band was observed in every specimen.

  • In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out at stress test levels of 461 MPa, 441 MPa, and 431 MPa by using smooth specimen of$2_{1/4}$ Cr-1 Mo steel with the stress ratio(R) of 0.05. The initiation, growth and coalescense process of the major cracks and sub-cracks among the fatigue cracks on the smooth specimen are investigated and measured under each stress level at a constant cycle ratio by the replica technique with optical microscope. Some of the important results are as follows: In spite of the difference of stress levels, the major crack data gather into a small band in the curve of surface crack length and crack depth against cycle ratio N/Nf. The sub-crack data, however, deviate from the band of the major crack. The growth rates, da/dN, of major and sub-crack plotted against the stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K$, have the tendency to be compressed on a relatively small band. But it is more effective to predict fatigue life through major cracks. The propagation behavior of surface microcracks on the smooth specimens coincides with that of the specimen having an artificial small surface defect or through crack.

  • The structural change of DLC coatings during long-term wear test and dicing test under the low loading condition was investigated. DLC coatings were applied for the precision injection molds of a modified SNCM steel for the extension of life and the micro-diamond blades for the high cutting efficiency and the increase in life. A ball-on-disc wear tests in the mold steel and a dicing tests in the micro-diamond blades were conducted to understand degradation of DLC coatings. The degradation of DLC coatings for the injection mold steel and the micro-diamond blades during the wear and dicing tests were studied with Raman Spectroscopy. Raman peaks were divided two bands(D band and G band) to study the degradation process of DLC structure. By the wear test, polished condition of wear marks were observed to be maintained until 10 hrs of wear test period is given, but small striation marks appeared in 20 hours wear test. It was observed that $I_D/I_G$ ratios changed as the degradation of DLC coatings is proceeded during the wear tests and the dicing tests. It is suggested that the change in $I_D/I_G$ value possibly reflected from the composition of $sp^2$ and $sp^3$ bondings in DLC layers relevant to the change in mechanical and physical property.

  • An investigation was conducted into the effects of $\kappa$-carbides on the cracking phenomenon, which often occurred in cold-rolled light-weight steel plates. Three kinds of steels were fabricated by varying the C content, and their microstructures and tensile properties were investigated. In the two steels that contained a high carbon content, the band structures of ferrites and $\kappa$-carbides that were severely elongated along the rolling direction were well developed, whereas continuous arrays of $\kappa$-carbides were formed in the steel that contained a low carbon content. Detailed microstructural analyses of the deformed region beneath the tensile fracture surface showed that the cracks initiated at arrays of $\kappa$-carbides or $\kappa$-carbides formed interfaces between the band structures, which initiated cleavage fractures in the ferrite bands, while the bands populated with a number of $\kappa$-carbides did not play an important role in propagating the cracks. Thus, the minimization of interfacial $\kappa$-carbides or $\kappa$-carbide arrays by increasing the carbon content was essential for preventing cracking from occurring during cold rolling.

  • The microstructural and textural development during rolling is compared in two Hadifield's steels (high Mn steel), one having low carbon content (0.65 wt.%) and the other high carbon (1.35 wt.%).In low carbon Hadfield's steel (LCHS) mixed microstructures are formed which contain intrinsic stacking faults, deformation twins, and brass type shear bands. The deformation twins are thought to be formed by the stacking of intrinsic stacking faults. The similar development to 70-30 brass texture is observed in early deformation. However the abnormal texture is developed after 40 % deformation, which is thought to be due to the martensite phase transformation. In high carbon Hadfield's steel (HCHS) mixed substructures of dislocation tangles, deformation twins, and shear bands (both copper and brass type) are found to develop. The texture development is similar to that of 70-30 brass. This is consistant with no carbon segregation and no martensitic phase transformation in HCHS. In spite of the difference of substructure and texture development during rolling in two steels, the difference in stacking fault energy is measured to be small ($2 mJm^-2$). The carbon segregation is only occurred in LCHS. Thus it is thought that the carbon segregation influence the microstructure and texture development during rolling. This is related with martensite phase transformation in LCHS.

  • In this paper, we have illuminated the radiation modes of rectangular planar antennas to interpret the nature of the wideband characteristic upon which formulas for bandwidth prediction are presented. Rectangular planar antennas are being investigated by many researchers in virtue of relatively simple design and fabrication procedures to replace the cylindrical monopoles. But the design principle for rectangular planar antennas is still based on that of cylindrical monopoles, and the nature of the wideband characteristic and the formula to estimate the upper band frequency are not analyzed yet. In this research, we have shown the patterns of the radiation modes explaining the wideband characteristic and also proposed the upper band frequency with minor modification for the lower band frequency formula based on mode formation principles. Finally we have confirmed the validity of our results, within 10 % accuracy, by the application to some published results.

  • The application in steel structures is increasing the mill sheet for the weathering steels by minimum maintenance cost in a life cycle cost. These have been collected and statistically analyzed to investigate chemical compositions, mechanical properties, weldability indices, weathering index and impact absorbed energy. From this study, although the band of dispersion in chernical compositions, mechanical properties and impact absorbed energy of the weathering steels appeared a little larger, the results revealed that these values have adequately satisfied the standard values of the Korean Standard. Furthermore, it was found that the weldability indices and the weathering index for the weathering steels have respectively satisfied the value prescribed by the Japanese Highway Specification and ASTM.

  • Fatigue tests by axial loading (R = 0.05) were carried out to investigate fatigue crack growth characteristics of small surface cracks in 2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo steel at room temperature by using flat specimens with a small artificial pit. All the data of the fatigue crack growth rate obtained in the present test are determined as a function of the stress intensity factor range about a semi-elliptical crack, so that the application of linear fracture mechanics to the surface fatigue crack growth and to the fatigue crack growth into depth, and all the data obtained from tests were discussed in comparison with the data of Type 304 stainless steel and two type of mild steel under the same test conditions. The obtained results are as follows: 1)When the cycle ratios are same, surface fatigue crack length and its depth are almost same and fall within a narrow scatter band in spite of different stress levels. 2)Relations of the surface fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) and fatigue crack growth rate into depth (db/dN) to its stress intensity factor range ($\Delta K_{Ia}, \Delta K_{Ib}$) can be plotted as a straight line at log-log diagram without dependence of stress level and coincide with the data of part-through crack in various steels.
