This paper describes the speed control functions of the typical steam turbine speed controllers and the test results of generator load rejection simulations. The goal of the test is to verify the speed controller's ability to limit the steam turbine's peak speed within a predetermined level in the event of generator load loss. During normal operations, the balance between the driving force of the steam turbine and the braking force of the generator load is maintained and the speed of the turbine-generator is constant. Upon the generator's load loss, in other word, the load rejection, the turbine speed would rapidly increase up to the peak speed at a fast acceleration rate. It is required that the speed controller has the ability to limit the peak speed below the overspeed trip point, which is typically 110[%] of rated speed. If an actual load rejection occurs, a substantial amount of stresses will be applied to the turbine as well as other equipments, In order to avoid this unwanted situation, not an actual test but the other method is necessary. We are currently developing the turbine control system for another nuclear power plant and have plan to do the simulation suggested in this paper.
We acquired operating data in an existing steam turbine power plant using analog control system to investigate operation characteristics. We analyzed a load control logic to develop a digital turbine control system. The load control logic is constituted of load target, load reference, loading rate, load limit and admission mode transfer of valve. The result of this paper is utilized to implement a digital turbine control system.
We analyzed an existing analog and digital turbine control logic. We developed load control application program for steam turbine power plant. In this paper, we showed a similar result compared with an existing analog turbine control system by computer simulation.
This study analyzes the design and part load performance of a power generation system combining a micro gas turbine (MGT) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). Design performances of cycles adopting several different organic fluids are analyzed and compared with performance of the steam based cycle. All of the organic fluids recover greater MGT exhaust heat than the steam cycle (much lower stack temperature), but their bottoming cycle efficiencies are lower. R123 provides higher combined cycle efficiency than steam does. The efficiencies of the combined cycle with organic fluids are maximized when the turbine exhaust heat of the MGT is fully recovered at the MGT recuperator, whereas the efficiency of the combined cycle with steam shows an almost reverse trend. Since organic fluids have much higher density than steam, they allow more compact systems. The efficiency of the combined cycle, based on a MGT with 30 percent efficiency, can reach almost 40 percent. hlso, the part load operation of the combined system is analyzed. Two representative power control methods are considered and their performances are compared. The variable speed control of the MGT exhibits far better combined cycle part load efficiency than the fuel only control despite slightly lower bottoming cycle performance.
This paper presents the characteristics of internal clearances for the interstage of blades and shaft gland seals on the steam turbine which are installed in tandem compound. Internal clearances was changed when the rotor turned in the cylindrical sleeve bearing due to the generation of oil film wedge. This presented concern is very useful to prevent the rubbing damage of seal edge between the fixed and moving parts in steam turbine due to the misalignment at the rotating and stationary parts. This method is applied for the unbalanced clearances distribution to the left and right sides in the turbine casing. A considerable amount of unbalanced clearances distribution trend is determined according to the rotating speed of rotor, size and type of proceeding bearing, oil viscosity, surface roughness of bearing and shaft, oil temperature, oil pressure and bearing load.

When Ti-6Al-4V is used in long steam turbine blades, the main issues are how to improve the fatigue strength as a problem of internal quality and how to forge the thinnest possible blades as problem of dimensional precision. To assure an excellent fatigue strength, it is important to make the two phase fine and equiaxial structure by providing enough plastic deformation in the two phase$(\alpha\;phase/\beta\;phase)$ temperature region. Accordingly, it needs to predict that forging temperature, preform design and forging velocity in forging process. To achieve this end, the two steps forging process was suggested to forge the thin and twisted blades with a precision hammer considering die forces and metal flow. Two steps forging process consists of the flattening forging process and finishing forging process. Process in forging of a 1016mm long steam turbine blade is designed by the finite element method. This study attempts to derive systematic design procedures for process design in the forging. Forging parameters was analyzed in two-dimensional plane-strain simulation and two steps forging process carried out in three-dimensional simulation. Consequently, optimal forging process parameters of long steam turbine blades in Ti-6Al-4V with a high dimensional precision are selected in the hammer die forging.

Prediction of performance and operating characteristics of a state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical (USC) steam turbine is an important issue in many ways. Theoretical and empirical correlation equations, developed a few decades ago, have been widely used in commercial programs for a prediction of performance. To improve of these correlation equations and apply them to the high pressure turbine of a USC steam turbine, computational fluid dynamic analysis was carried out and correlation equations to calculate efficiency variation of each stage were made. Both fluid dynamic characteristic and thermodynamic performance was analyzed for the development of the correlation equations. In particular, the impact of flow addition through an overload valve (OLV) between stages was examined throughly. The trend of pressure drop due to the flow mixing by the OLV flow addition was analyzed and an efficiency correlation equation considering the OLV flow was also made.
In this study, the damage mechanism of large scale steam turbine due to water induction was analyzed and recovery characteristics were reviewed. A turbine consists of the rotating rotor and the stationary casing, and the clearance between them is very small for the efficiency enhancement. If water induction, while relatively cold steam or water is introduced into turbine, occurs, the considerable humping is caused at the casing near the initial water induction point and that induces the rubbing between rotor and casing. Finally, it leads to the catastrophic failure. Bowed rotor has the different characteristics in the recovery depending on damage degree. The elastic deformation due to light rubbing is recovered by turning the rotor with 3 rpm under normal operation condition, but most plastic deformation due to rubbing deforms the local microstructure and that results in permanent deformation which could not be recovered under normal operation condition. Bowed rotor has diverse characteristics depending on the recovery method, and the method is empirical and needs the cutting edge technology. Careful recovery treatment of the rotor will eliminate the risks and secure the high quality rotor similar to new rotor. If any critical error is made during the recovery, the rotor would not be recovered permanently and it should be scrapped.

This paper discusses the thermodynamic study on the suction cooling-steam injected gas turbine cycle. The aim of this study is to improve the thermal efficiency and the specific output by steam injection produced by the waste heat from the waste heat recovery boiler and by cooling compressor inlet air by an ammonia absorption-type suction cooling system. The operating region of this newly devised cycle depends upon the pinch point limit and the outlet temperature of refrigerator. The higher steam injection ratio and the lower the evaporating temperature of refrigerant allow the higher thermal efficiency and the specific output. The optimum pressure ratios and the steam injection ratios for the maximum thermal efficiency and the specific output can be found. It is evident that this cycle considered as one of the most effective methods which can obtain the higher thermal efficiency and the specific output comparing with the conventional simple cycle and steam injected gas turbine cycle.
In recent decades, exergy analysis has been holding spotlight as a useful tool in the design, assessment, optimization, and improvement of energy system. This paper presents the results of the energy and exergy analysis of a steam turbine cogeneration system for industrial complex using two efficiency concepts of conventional one and exergetic one. In order to obtain the destroyed exergy of each component, mathematical analysis is conducted by using exergy balance and the second law of thermodynamics, according as the parameters are changed, such as the ratio of returned process steam, process steam supplied, temperature and pressure of boiler and power. The computer program developed in this study can determine the efficiencies and exergy destroyed at each component of cogeneration system. As a result of this study, a component having the largest destroyed exergy was boiler. And closed and opened feedwater heater had the lowest one. The affects to the cogeneration system due to the variation of process steam flow and return rate of condensed water is shown that the total electric power efficiency(${\eta}_E$) is decreased as increasing the return rate of condensed water under constant process steam flow. As the boiler pressure is increased for the more production of electricity, the efficiency of cogeneration system was decreased.
