  • Cone penetration was analyzed by arbitrary Lagangian-Eulerian(ALE) method. In order to simulate full penetration, steady state analyses were performed using ABAQUS/Explicit, which models upward flow of soil layers. In the analysis of homogeneous layer it was found that the paths and the strain of soil particles were consistent with the result of the strain path method and that the ultimate resistance were reasonably evaluated. The cone penetration through different soil layers was also analyzed and that showed the transfer of cone resistance. The steady state ALE analysis could perform full penetration through the layered soils.

  • An unstructured hybrid mesh flow solver has been developed for the simulations of three dimensional steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method were discretized by using a node-based finite-volume method. For the unsteady time-accurate computation, a dual-time stepping method was adopted to satisfy a divergence free flow field at each physical time step. The one equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to solve the high-Reynolds number flow fields. This method has been applied to calculate the steady flow fields around submarine configurations and unsteady flow fields around a 3-D infinite cylinder.

  • The dynamic chatacteristics and stability including steady state characteristic of the currentfed DC-to-DC converter with multiouput, which has a considerable advantage about the multioutut circuit, are analyzed in this paper. It is performed by using the steady state averaging method. As result, we know that the error, which is caused by secondary winding resistance of the transformer, exists between the two outputs in the steady state characteristics. Furthemore, it is verified that the current-fed DC-to-DC converter has also excellent stability in the multioutput application.

  • A steady prediction method is presented to compute dynamic damping coefficients for axisymmetric projectiles. Viscous flow analysis is essential to the steady method using a zero-spin coning motion in the inertial coordinate frame. The present method is applied to compute the pitching moment and the pitch-damping moment coefficients for the Army-Navy Spinning Rocket. The results are in good agreement with the parabolized Navier-Stokes data, range data, and unsteady prediction data. Predictions for Secant-Ogive-Cylinder configurations are performed to investigate effects of afterbody geometries. To investigate the geometrical effect and flow physics, the longitudinal developments of the coefficients are examined in detail.

  • The metal flow and the strain distribution is investigated for the steady state and non-steady state bulk deformation processes by using an improved visioplasticity method which includes the effective smoothing scheme. The comparison of various smoothing schemes leads to the selection of the five- point least square smoothing method which is employed to reduce the measurement errors. As a steady state forming process experiments are carried out for axisy- mmetric forward extrusion through conical and curved dies of various area reduc- tions using Aluminum and steel billets. Axisymmetric backward extrusion is chosen for a nonsteady state forming process. In axisymmetric forward extrusion the results from visioplasticity show that the curved die of a fourth-order polynomial renders more uniform distribution of strain rates and strains. Higher reduction leads to greater strain rates at the outer side of the billet. The visioplastic observation for axisymmetric backward extrusion as a non-steady state deformation process shows the concentration of higher strain at the inner wall of the extruded product. The visioplastic results in forward extrusion are in agreement with the computed results by the finite element method. It is thus shown that the visio- plasticity combined with a smoothing technique is an effective method to determine the pattern and the distribution of strain rates and strains.

  • Barred-spiral galaxies possess double patterns: a bar and spiral arms. While their angular speeds play an important role in governing gas dynamical evolution of barred spiral galaxies, there is no direct way to observe them. The Tremaine-Weinberg (TW) method has been one of the most reliable indirect methods to estimate pattern speeds, although it requires a few strict assumptions, notably one that the gas tracer is in a quasi-steady state. In barred-spiral galaxies, however, non-steady gas flows are significant especially when the double patterns have different angular speeds. Using numerical models, we explore the effect of non-steady gas motions on the determination of double pattern speeds based on the TW method. We find that the TW method is accurate within 15% when there is only a single pattern or when double patterns have the same angular speed. When double patterns have different speeds, on the other hand, neglecting the non-steady flows leads to quite large errors (> 30%) in the derived pattern speeds, and severely underestimate the real values for the viewing angle parallel to the bar minor axis. This suggests that one should be cautious when applying the TW method to galaxies with double patterns with different speeds.

  • This study is concerned with the analysis of two-dimensional steady magnetic fields by the coupling of FEM and BEM. FEM(Finite Element Method)is most widely used as a method of numerical analysis and BEM (Boundary Element Method)is a newest method for it. And the results from this coupling method are compared and discussed with those of FEM only. Consequently, it is shown that to obtain the same accuracy of results the coupling method requires less calculating time and dimension than the FEM.

  • For the steady-state solutions of vibratory systems where the dynamics involves nonlinearity and discontinuity, a method of numerical simulation has been normally used. This paper presents a new approach which may overcome some difficulties in the simulation method. This approach is based on the fundamental assumption that the steady-state forced vibration is periodic, so that the problem is formulated as a two-point boundary-value problem and can be solved by Waner's algorithm. This method is demonstrated through the solutions of a linear system, a system with Coulomb friction and an impact pair. It is found that the method gives true solutions well both for linear and nonlinear systems, which convinces us of the usefulness of the method.

  • Floor panel heating system is popular in Korea as dwelling house heating system. There are two methods for keeping floor surface warm. One method is delivering warm air under the floor such as Roman Hypocaust and Korean traditional Ondol. The other method is imbedding hot water pipes into the concrete floor slab. This paper gives basic equations for steady and transient solutions of heat conduction from hurried pipes. For steady-state solution, fin Efficiency Method and Sink and Source Method were introduced. Sink and Source Method is applied to transient state and basic solution is given in the form of Exponential Integral Function. Numerical solutions can be solved easily by digital computer from these equations.

  • Steady flow bench test is a practical, powerful and widely used in most engine manufacturers to give a design concept of a new engine. In order to use steady data as a performance index, it is necessary to build some database, which can correlate the port characteristics with engine data. However, it is very difficult to investigate all port shapes with experimental tools. The steady flow scheme is relatively simple and its results are bulk ones such as flow rate and momentum of flow. Therefore a CFD code can be easily applied to the port evaluation. In this study, the steady flow test was simulated through three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method . for this purpose, the effect of valve curvature on flow rate was estimated by a CFD code. Numerical results were compared with those of real steady flow tests. As a result, the results of 3-D analysis were almost consistent with experimental data.
