Impacts of Wellness Components on Individuals' Wellness Status for Wellness Convergence Systems (웰니스 구성요소에 대한 융복합적 검증 웰니스 구성요소가 웰니스 상태에 미치는 영향)

  • Today, individuals' psychological attitude toward health has been changed from passive to active and dynamic way of thinking. This trend has made attention to wellness more interesting. However, prior studies regarding wellness have been limited in developing indices to measure status of individuals' wellness. Thus, this study adopts five major components of wellness, including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and occupational wellness in order to examine their effects on individuals' wellness state. The data from 494 employee at various organizations were analyzed to test proposed hypotheses. The results reveal that five components of wellness have a significant influence on wellness status. Based on the findings, academic and practical implications for wellness convergence systems are discussed.

An Innovative Wellness Program Promoting Participation in Physical Activity of Community-Dwelling Frail Elderly

  • Background: Given the potential benefits of wellness programs promoting physical activity of the community-dwelling frail elderly, it is recommended that comprehensive wellness programs combined with the component of physical activity. This may improve overall health and potentially lower the health care cost of the frail elderly. In general, the frail elderly residing in community or those after being discharged from hospitals are often committed to enhancing the status of participation in physical activity. Objects: The purposes of this study were to identify specific shortcomings of current wellness programs as part of continuum of community rehabilitation services and to propose alternatives for the care of the community-dwelling frail elderly. Through this study, geriatric health care professionals may be able to implement assessments and programs to successfully promote an effective continuum of care for the frail elderly. Methods: Article reviews were summarized and evaluated. Results: A model elaborating the relationship between components of successful wellness program and participation in physical activities for the community-dwelling frail elderly are recommended. First, periodic monitoring the levels of physical activity by the use of online measurement system should be considered. Second, individualized adaptive technologies for selecting optimal physical activities for the elderly may be better fit to individuals' current status of physical activity. Conclusion: The current status of physical activity in community-dwelling frail elderly can be monitored by online assessment systems. Through the innovative measurement system, elderly may assess his/her physical activity status overtime, select optimal physical activities matching the status, and create the elderly's own adaptive wellness programs that match to the status while residing in his/her community.

  • 최근 Wellness 산업이 발전되면서 Wellness 분야의 다양한 서비스 형태에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 기존의 Wellness 서비스는 디바이스에 한정되어 서비스를 제공하기 때문에 제한적인 문제점이 있다. 보다 다양한 형태의 서비스를 제공하기 위해서 디바이스에 한정된 서비스를 자동차 환경에 적용하여 제공하는 자동차 Wellness에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 자동차 내의 Wellness 서비스는 운전자 건강관리, 사고예방과 같은 서비스와 질 높은 콘텐츠를 제공한다. 본 논문에서는 자동차 내의 운전자 건강상태 최적화를 위한 지능형 Wellness 서비스를 제안한다. 이 서비스를 통해 운전자의 건강상태를 최적화하여 사고 예방에 도움이 된다. 또한 지능형 Wellness 서비스 연구동향 및 다양한 형태의 Wellness 서비스의 향후 발전 방향에 대해 고찰한다.

A Study on Wellness and Quality of Life Related With Demographic Characteristics

  • This study aimed to inquire the relationship among wellness, quality of life and socio-demographic variables in Korean middle school students. 'Korean Wellness Scale for Middle school students(K-WSM), Quality of Life Scale, and other socio-demographic data were surveyed to 1,200 students in national wide area. For the results, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation, and Multiple regression were conducted. With demographic variables, sex, religion, & academic achievement of students, social economic status(SES) and living with both of parents were positively related to wellness and quality of life. But grade and physical disease of student didn't show significant relationships. The relationship between wellness and quality of life showed high correlation (r=.66, p < .05). Among the wellness subscales, spiritual and social wellness showed significant predictive power. In the end, the contributions and limitations of this study were discussed.

Development of a Wellness Index for Workers (근로자를 위한 웰니스지표 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a wellness index for workers (WIW) and examine the validity and reliability of the WIW for assessing workers' wellness. Methods: The developmental process for the instrument included construction of a conceptual framework based on a wellness model, generation of initial items, verification of content validity, preliminary study, extraction of final items, and psychometric testing. Content validity was verified by 4 experts from occupational health nursing and wellness disciplines. The construct validity, convergent validity and discriminant validity were examined with confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability was examined with Cronbach's alpha. The participants were 494 workers from two workplaces. Results: Eighteen items were selected for the final scale, and the results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported a five-factor model of wellness with acceptable model fit, and factors named as physical emotional social intellectual occupational wellness. The convergent and discriminant validity were also supported. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was .91. Conclusion: The results indicate that the WIW is a valid and reliable instrument to comprehensively assess workers' wellness, and to provide basic directions for developing workplace wellness program.

Improving hydration in elite male footballers during a national team training camp - an observational case study

  • [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to (i) assess hydration levels in elite male football players during a national team training camp before and during qualifying matches, (ii) evaluate the effect of coaching strategies for hydration based on feedback from hydration monitoring, and (iii) assess possible relationships between hydration status and training load or wellness markers. [Methods] Thirty-one male players (age 27±4 yrs; height 185±6 cm; weight 82.9±6.7 kg; body fat 10.4±2.3%) representing a national team from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) participated. The players were studied during three different national team training camps related to the UEFA Nations League tournament. Urine specific gravity (USG) was measured to assess hydration status. During all camps, the players were actively coached on improving strategies for hydration and given individual feedback on their test results. The training load was measured using GPS technology, and wellness questionnaires were completed. [Results] USG decreased progressively and significantly (p<0.005) during camp 1 and hydration status improved over the three camps, with fewer dehydrated and more well-hydrated players identified during the last part of camp 3. Significantly (p<0.05) higher USG values were observed 2 days prior to a match (MD-2) than on match day (MD); consequently, 52% of the players were dehydrated on MD-2 and only 6% on MD. No correlations were observed between hydration status and training load or wellness markers. [Conclusion] Dehydration is a challenge in elite male football, but continuous monitoring of hydration status and coaching on hydration strategies can lead to major improvements and reduce the degree of dehydration.

The Influence of Worker's Exercise Self-Efficacy, Self Determination, Exercise Behavior On Wellness :Focusing Large-scale Workplace Workers (근로자의 운동자기효능감, 자기결정성, 운동행위가 웰니스에 미치는 영향: 대규모 사업장 근로자를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine to identify factors affecting wellness of workers. This study collected questionnaire data from 172 workers from two large workplaces more than 1,000 workers are located in G city. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient and Hierarchical regression with IBM SPSS statistics 20.0 program. Wellness of worker was correlated with exercise self-efficacy(r=.23, p<.05), autonomous motivation(r=.38, p<.001), exercise behavior(r=.61, p<.001). Hierarchical regression analysis showed that exercise self-efficacy(${\beta}=.34$, p<.001), exercise behavior(${\beta}=.30$, p<.001), subjective health status(${\beta}=-.23$, p<.001), subjective economic status(${\beta}=-.13$, p=.016) explained 57.3%(F=39.29, p<.001) of wellness of workers. Based on the finding, there is a need to develop an intervention program that consider exercise self-efficacy, exercise behavior, subjective health status and subjective economic status.

  • Muscular strength in the elderly is important factors deciding on functional state in daily lives, and functional state shows a health condition. Resistance training to prevent loss of muscle mass and muscle fiber atrophy due to aging can increase muscle mass and strength. Recently, resistance training to improve muscular strength and endurance has been actively researched. Resistance training increases activities of daily living and ability of the elderly, which makes healthy senescent. ADL/IADL is suitable for measuring health condition of the elderly. In this study, target muscles of resistance training were chosen through a correlation analysis between ADLs and elementary motion, and we presented a procedure to select target muscles and exercise equipments. This procedure consist of a survey method that were described detailed motion of ADL/IADL. So we should be to extract resistance training machine to improve functions of regarding fundamental motion. Result of study may improve daily life activities of the elderly through objectives and scientific approaches. Furthermore, it will be helpful to studies about various fields of the elderly.

Plate waste study among hospitalised patients receiving texture-modified diet

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While plate waste has been widely investigated in hospitals, there have been minimal studies specific to the texture-modified diet (TMD). This study aims to determine the percentage of plate waste among patients prescribed with TMD and its contributory factors. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This was a single-centre study conducted in the university hospital on three types of TMD (blended diet, mixed porridge, minced diet) during lunch and dinner meals. Weighing method and visual estimation method assisted by digital photograph were adopted in this study. Face to face interview was carried out to investigate on 1) the food/food service quality factors in terms of patients' satisfaction level towards sensorial quality of food and food services provided and 2) the clinical/external factors including appetite, the provision of oral nutrition support, time taking the diet, the need for feeding assistance and the length of hospital stay. RESULTS: The mean percentage of overall plate waste of 95 patients receiving TMD was high (47.5%). Blended diet was identified as the most wasted diet (65%) followed by minced diet (56%) and mixed porridge (35%). Satisfaction level among patients was moderate. Patients on TMD in general had higher satisfaction level on the aspect of food service as compared to food quality. Substantial association between sensorial qualities of food and plate waste were varied according to individual TMD type. A multiple linear regression showed that only the satisfaction level toward the aspects of appearance and variety of foods were the predictors of TMD plate waste (R2 = 0.254, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A significant relationship between the percentage of plate waste and the overall satisfaction level of patients receiving TMD suggests that vigorous strategies are needed to reduce the food waste of TMD which will lead to a better nutritional status and clinical outcomes among the patients.

Health and Wellness Monitoring Using Intelligent Sensing Technique

  • This work develops a monitoring system for the population with health concerns. A belt integrated with an on-body circuit and sensors measures a wearer's selected vital signals. The electrocardiogram sensors monitor heart conditions and an accelerometer assesses the level of physical activity. Sensed signals are transmitted to the circuit module through digital yarns and are forwarded to a mobile device via Bluetooth. An interactive application, installed on the mobile device, is used to process the received signals and provide users with real-time feedback about their status. Persuasive functions are designed and implemented in the interactive application to encourage users' physical activity. Two signal processing algorithms are developed to analyze the data regarding heart and activity. A user study is conducted to evaluate the performance and usability of the developed system.
