For stator winding protection of AC generator, KCL(Kirchhoff's Current Law) is widely applied. Actually a CRDR(Current Ratio Differential Relay) based on DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) has been used for protecting generator. It has been pointed out that defects can occur during the process of transforming a time domain signal into a frequency domain one which can lead to loss of time domain information. Wavelets techniques are proposed for the analysis of power system transients. This paper introduces an algorithm to choose a suitable Mother Wave1et for generator stator fault detection. For optimal selection, we analyzed db(Daubechies), sym(Symlets), and coif(Coiflects) of Mother Wavelet. And we compared with performance of the choice algorithm using detail coefficients energy and RMS(root mean square) error. It can be improved the reliability of the conventional DFT based CRDR. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme is proved with simulation using collected data obtained from ATP (Alternative Transient Program) package.

Generator of hydroelectric generating unit is to be protected by the digital protection IED. Now, any IED of large capacity for hydro power plant was not developed by domestic technology. This is because it is required for the generator of the high reliability technology and considered as due to the sale of the market of IED device is small. However, the protection IED must be develop by domestic technology to meet the advanced needs of the construction and replacement of electrical equipment in accordance with the new power plant development. In this paper, a digital algorithms for protection IED of large size of hydroelectric generating unit were designed. The algorithms consist of the stator protection, anti-motoring, overexcitation and loss of excitation. The performance of the algorithms were evaluated by using the simulation data collected from the PSCAD/EMTDC software. From test results, it can be seen that the developed algorithms were not maloperation.
Most of modern wind turbines employs a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system because it has many advantages due to variable-speed operation, relatively high efficiency and it small converter size. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. This paper presents a protection relaying algorism for DFIG using the DQ equivalent circuits. The induced voltages calculated from the stator and rotor sides are nearly the same in the steady state. They become different in the DQ equivalent circuits during an internal fault. The proposed algorithm compares the inducted voltages estimated from the stator and the rotor circuit converted into the stationary reference frame. If the difference between the induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects an turn-to-turn fault.

We propose a protection algorithm for a DFIG based on a d-q equivalent circuit in the time domain. In the DFIG, the voltages and currents of the rotor side and the stator side are available. The proposed algorithm estimates the instantaneous induced voltages of magnetizing inductance using those voltages and currents from both the stator and the rotor sides. If the difference between the two estimated induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects an internal fault. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various operating and fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.

A doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) system has been widely used in the modem wind turbines due to variable-speed operation, high efficiency and small converter size. It is well known that an inter-turn fault of a generator is very difficult to be detected. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. This paper proposes a protection algorithm for a DFIG using the d-q equivalent circuit in the time domain. In the case of a DFIG, the voltages and currents of the rotor side as well as the voltages and currents of the stator are available. The proposed algorithm estimates the instantaneous(i.e., converted into the stationary frame) induced voltages from the rotor and the stator sides. If the difference between the two estimated induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects the inter-turn fault. The algorithm can detect a inter-turn fault of a winding. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator under inter-turn fault conditions and normal operating conditions such as an external fault and the change of the wind speed.
This paper describes online stator-resistance estimation of a linear induction motor(LIM) with cage-type secondary using direct thrust control(DTC), where the resistance value is derived from stator-winding temperature estimation using thermocouple. In this paper, corrected stator resistance has an error in actuality measurement resistance. So compensation coefficient $\kappa$ which is decided through comparison and verifying several times relation of calculated resistance and measured motor line-line resistance. The stator-winding temperature information can also be used for monitoring, protection, and fault-tolerant control of the machine. Also, this paper reports the LIM's responses of the flux measured by the proposed stator resistance compensation algorithm.

The large AC generator fault may lead to large impacts or perturbations in power system. The generator protection control systems in Korea have been imported and operated through a turn-key from overseas entirely. Therefore a study of the generator protection field has in urgent need for a stable operation of the imported goods. In present, the algorithm using the current ratio differential relaying based DFT for stator winding protection or a fault detection had been applied that of internal fault protection of a generator. the DFT used for the analysis of transient state signal conventionally had defects losing a time information in the course of transforming a target signal to frequency domain. In this paper, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was applied a fault detection of the generator being superior to a transient state signal analysis and being easy to real time realization. The fault signals after executing a terminal fault modeling collect using a MATLAB package, and calculate the wavelet coefficients through the process of a muiti-level decomposition (MLD). The proposed algorithm for a fault detection using the Daubechies WT (wavelet transform) was executed with a C language and the commend line function for the real time realization after analyzing MATLAB's graphical interface. The advanced technique had improved faster a speed of fault discrimination than a conventional DFR based on DFT.

When a partial discharge takes place at the stator of a generator, the electrical pulse will propagate along the stator bars and the capacitor chains formed by the end part of the stator winds. On the first path, the pulse propagates as a travel wave at slow speed. On the second path, the pulse propagates at quick speed. Based on the data of the experiments on a real 50 MW steam generator, the author has found the pulses can propagate by magnetic field of the stator winding. It was studied that how to locating the partial discharge by signals coming from the different paths, including the features of signals on the two paths at time domain and frequency domain, the measurement frequency rang of the signals, the blind area, the advantage and disadvantage of this method.

A new method of protecting 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motor aginst burning-out by unbalance operation is proposed. This paper studied various kinds of situations occurred by unbalance operating in 3-phase induction motor, and we provided the search coils in the slots of stator and rotor for the purpose of detecting electrical phenpmena during unbalance operation. Through experiments, we find that search coils in the slots of stator is effective method for protecting the induction motor from unbalance operating.

AC generator plays an important role of power system. The large AC generator fault may lead to large impacts or perturbations in power system. And then the protection of a generator has very important role in maintaining stability in a power system. In present, the DFT(discrete Fourier transform) based RDR(ratio differential relay) had been widely applied to a internal fault of a generator stator winding. But DFT has a serious drawback. In the course of transforming a target signal to frequency domain, time information is lost. DWT uses a time-scale region. This paper proposes an advanced fault detection algorithm using DWT(discrete Wavelet transform) to enhance the drawback of conventional DFT based relaying. To evaluate the performance of the proposed relaying, we used the test data which were sampled with 720 [Hz] per cycle and obtained from ATP(alternative transient program) simulation. And we made a comparative study of conventional DFT based RDR and the proposed relaying.
