  • Using computer simulated irregular waves, variations of ocean wave statistics according to sea state are analyzed, and the reasonable conditions that transform the energy spectrum to individual wave statistics are discussed. Ocean wave statistics varying with sea state are found to respond linearly to the spectral peakedness parameter $Q_p$ and spectrum moments $m_n$ (n = 0, 1, 2${\cdots}{\cdots}\;\infty$ ). It is clarified that the 2nd-order spectrum moment is a reasonable parameter which represents the wave statistics including wave periods, and that the spectrum analysis should be carried out under the conditions of minimum data length of 10 times of peak period $T_p$ with time lag of $7T_p$ to satisfy the stable condition of wave statistics.

  • In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current situation and the inherent problems found in modern statistics education in Korea. We investigate the American probability and statistics curriculum currently used in Wisconsin and discuss the overall state of statistics education in The United States. Through comparison of both the Korean and Wisconsin model, we explore the future direction of statistical education.

  • This paper studies on the necessity of mathematics/statistics in software and hardware fields. First, this research analyzes the contents of mathematics/statistics among subjects in software and hardware fields. Secondly, this research explores the relationship and connectivity between mathematics/statistics and major tracks of software and hardware fields. This connectivity between mathematics/statistics and majors in software and hardware fields would certainly contribute to creating pragmatic and professional knowledge.

  • Statistics Korea has been diagnosis national statistics every year since 2006. They diagnosis over 200 kinds of national statistics. They have 7 quality dimension used for quality diagnosis. That is relevance, accuracy, Timeliness, Comparability, Coherence, Accessibility. Since we are interest in how well they produce national statistics, comparability has become the most important dimension recently. In this reason, Statistics Korea try to rating quality level and development comparability index for national statistics. This paper propose the practical method of grading the quality level and developing the comparability index of the national statistics.

  • In big data environment, we need new approach for big data analysis, because the characteristics of big data, such as volume, variety, and velocity, can analyze entire data for inferring population. But traditional methods of statistics were focused on small data called random sample extracted from population. So, the classical analyses based on statistics are not suitable to big data analysis. To solve this problem, we propose an approach to efficient big data analysis. In this paper, we consider a big data analysis using principal component analysis, which is popular method in multivariate statistics. To verify the performance of our research, we carry out diverse simulation studies.

  • The SAS macro faces program by Friendly (1992) is for Chernoff face analysis, which is one of methods for the visualization representation of multivariate data. In this paper, we examined 18 face features used in the program and presented the modified program depending on the definition of a good face in days present. In addition, a good bank evaluation for 15 domestic banks was performed through Chernoff face analysis based on 11 bank economic indicators representing stability, the consumer satisfaction, soundness, and banks profitability.

  • Independent Component Analysis is a popular statistical method to separate independent signals from the mixed data, and Group Independent Component Analysis is an its multi-subject extension of Independent Component Analysis. It has been applied Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging data and provides promising results. However, classical Group Independent Component Analysis works poorly when outliers exist on data which is frequently occurred in Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanning. In this study, we propose a robust version of the Group Independent Component Analysis based on ROBPCA. Through the numerical studies, we compare proposed method to the conventional method, and verify the robustness of the proposed method.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to assess the statistical methods errors used in the journal of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine(JORM) and to identify the types of errors in statistical analysis. Methods : We reviewed quantitative articles that were published in the JORM from January 2005 through October 2009. Those were not used by statistical analysis such as literature studies, case study, review articles were not included in this analysis. A total of 296 articles was reviewed. We evaluated the adequacy and the validity of the statistical techniques with our checklist established be modified Lee's checklist, and three statistical evaluators assessed together to minimize bias. Results : Of the 222 articles, 213 were used in inferential and descriptive statistics. Of those 80% of articles adopting descriptive and inferential statistics were detected having statistical errors. One articles used 1.7 statistical method unit generally. Most frequently employed statistics were student t-test, one way ANOVA. pearson correlation analysis, Mann-whitney U test, paired t-test, and chi-square test in their order. However, most frequent statistics having errors were similar in order. The most common statistic errors were as follow: 1. absence of normality test, 2. misuse between paired test and unpaired test, 3. wrong choice of repeated measures analysis without consideration of time variables, 4, increase of Type I error by using inappropriate multiple test, 5. inappropriate application of discrete or categorical data instead of continuous data in correlation analysis, 6. poor consideration of basic consumption in chi-square test, 7. confusion between frequency comparison and average comparison, 8. mentioning the statistical technique without using it. Conclusions : We found various mistake or misuses in the applications of statistical methodologies in the articles published in the JORM. Careful consideration of statistical use and review from the specialist of statistics are warranted for improving the quality of JORM.
