A Study on the Oral Health Literacy and Related Factors of Mother's in Some Areas

  • Background: This study aims to provide basic data for development of the level-based oral health care program depending on the mother's oral health literacy by finding out how mother's oral health literacy can effect on the preschool children's oral health and behavior. Methods: The survey was conducted on 192 mothers who have preschool children and the data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis to identify differences in verbal and functional oral health literacy. Results: The study showed statistical significance (p<0.05) in educational level depending on differences in verbal and functional oral health literacy by sociodemographic factor. In differences in verbal and functional literacy depending on experience of education for oral health behavior and oral health, statistical significance (p<0.05) was showed highly on verbal and functional literacy in the case that subjects have an experience of education for oral health and their children have not been experienced of oral illness. And when it comes to the case that subjects have experience of education for oral health within one to two years, statistical significance was showed highly on verbal literacy. It showed that verbal and functional oral health literacy effects to oral health care behavior of children judging from results that the higher level of mother's verbal oral health literacy, the higher score of children's oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop the systematic program which is appropriate for characteristics of each oral period in childhood depending on level of primary caregiver's oral health literacy, and systematic education should be preceded to enhance the literacy of the caregiver. It is considered necessary to improve the oral health care of children by developing a manual for oral health care education to enhance primary caregiver's oral health literacy.

Relation between food pattern and self-recognition of major oral disease on the Korean adults (한국성인의 식사패턴과 본인이 인지한 양대 구강병과의 관련성 연구)

  • Objectives : Targeting Korean adults, the food pattern are grasped. And, its correlation with oral disease is analyzed. In order to offer basic data to developing the nutritional policy and nutritional program for the future prevention from oral disease, a research was conducted by utilizing the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005(the 3rd term). Methods : The subjects in this study were 6,526 adults in more than fully 19 years among 9,047 persons who participated in the food intake survey out of those who completed the health interview survey. The statistical analysis was analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 program. Results : 1. As a result of Group Analyzing was indicated to dangerous-type food pattern and protection-type food pattern. 2. As a result of analyzing the answers for having dental caries in the annually personal recognition was indicated to be high in the dangerous-type food pattern, and had not the statistically significant difference. 3. As a result of analyzing the answers for having periodontal disease in the annually personal recognition was indicated to be high in the dangerous-type food pattern, and had the statistically significant difference(p<0.05). 4. As a result of analyzing the food pattern factors that have influence upon both major oral illnesses in the annually personal recognition, the person, who has the dangerous-type food pattern, had high risk level of the periodontal disease in the annually personal recognition. Conclusions : In the above results, as a result of surveying and analyzing importance of the food pattern in the incidence of both major oral illnesses, it is considered that there will be necessity of continuing to research into developing the nutritional policy and nutritional program in order to prevent oral illness in the future.

Developing Experimental Education Program for Safety Considering Psychological Effect (심리적 효과를 고려한 체험적 안전교육 방안)

  • The object of this study is to understand the psychological factor of the worker on safety and recommend the experimental factor of safety education program. The following are the methods of this study. We analyzed the statistical data from survey to workers(N=139) about the psychological factor on safety. The survey consisted of 34 questions about 4 factors like private external characteristic, psychological characteristic, characteristics on behavior, and experience and reason of disaster. As the result of the analysis of the multi regression model on the base of correlation of each of the major factors, psychological health, effort on practicing, and satisfaction on their life were the variables with high influence on the safety mind of workers. So, it is good safety strategy for effective working to maintain healthy life with optimistic minds, and try to practice actively as usual. After considering the result, for the development of safety education program for working, we have to consider psychological factors of our workers that influence their safety and try to improve the experimental education opportunity, and it will be effective.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an educational program for improving conversational skills in military counselors and prove its effects. For statistical analysis, t test to find out homogeneity between the experimental and control group and to find out the differences of two groups, and an evaluation before and after the program to verify the therapeutic effects of the program were each proved by SPSS 15.0 for Windows. The followings are the list of the results. First of all, the program was effective in improving military counseling communication skills. Secondly, it was proved to be effective in improving self-effectiveness in counselors. Thirdly, the program was effective in improving interpersonal communication skills. Fourthly, the program revealed its therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is concluded that the program would help greatly in military counseling and living.

Developing Job Description for Dietitians Working in Public Health Nutrition Areas (보건소 영양사를 위한 직무 기술서 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized job description for dietitians working in the public health nutrition area. Work-oriented job analysis methodology was employed for the study purpose. Subjects of 38 dietitians currently working at health centers in 2002 were recruited. Based on the focus group interview with 7 public health nutritionists and 7 professors, information about task elements was collected. Questionnaires measuring work performance and self-perception of importance of the selected task elements were administered. Reliability and validity of this instrument were tested by Chronbach's alpha and factor analysis. SAS PC package program was used for the statistical analysis. The final developed job description for public health nutritionists included 5 duties, 20 tasks and 93 task elements. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1) 5 duty areas are A. plan and evaluation of public health nutrition services, B. developing nutrition education materials, C. implementing nutrition services, D. networking community, and E. self development. 2) Each duty area from A to E was composed with 6, 2, 6, 4, 2 tasks, respectively. 3) Each duty area from A to E was composed with 24, 8, 38, 14, 9, and 2 task elements, respectively.

  • This study was aimed at giving help to the people intending to change their hair fashion feeling for changing their own hair colour design and also providing the guide line to the cosmetic circles for developing new hair colour design and promoting sales by statistically analyzing hair colours and the other factors(demographic characteristics, hair styling, total fashion feeling, hair style) of capital area women in their twenties based on the theoretical study on tatal fasion feeling & hair fashion feeling, and hair trend. The researching methods were composed of prior theoretical research, statistical analysis. The prior theoretical research was accomplished by analysis of literatures, magazines and internet sites about total & hair fashion feelings and hair trend. The statistical analysis used a questionnaire composed of 33 questions in 5 categories. The survey of the questionnaire had been conducted from June 15 to June 28 in 2005 on the 600 women in the capital area, investigated by a group of experts on cosmetics or clothing from academic or business society. The analysis of materials from the survey was done by SPSS program(ver. 12.0) using frequency analysis, x2-test and cross tabulation analysis specified on high significant values. Based on the above results of x2-test and cross tabulation analysis, categorized the characteristics of the hair fashion feeling groups, especially hair colours in the order of percentage. This study would be very helpful to the people trying to change their own hair fashion feeling and be useful to the cosmetic circles for developing new hair colour design and promoting sales by comprehending hair colour market and also be valuable to develop the analysis methodology of hair colour and hair fashion trend.

The Perception for Development Need of Codonopsis Lanceolata Dishes by Industrial Foodservice Dieticians (사업체 영양사의 더덕 음식 개발에 대한 인식 조사)

  • The purposes of this study were to assess the perception of the characteristics of Condonopsis lanceolata dishes and to find out the development need & willingness to purchase for Condonopsis lanceolata dishes in view of industrial foodservice dieticians. Of 250 questionnaires distributed, 152 completed questionnaires were used for the statistical evaluation. Statistical data analysis was using SPSS 10.0 program for descriptive analysis, X2-test, t-test and analysis of variance. The perception score on the characteristics of Condonopsis lanceolata dishes varied according to the number of meals served, mean price of a meal, type of food service management, food cost variation, offering type, and intake frequency; however, perception score was not affected by the number of meal serving/day and the type of menu. Regarding processed foods containing Condonopsis lanceolat, the need for developing side dishes was the highest in processed foods using Condonopsis lanceolata, followed by alcoholic beverage, one dish foods, health foods, and desserts. The score for willingness to purchase dessert of Condonopsis lanceolata was the highest, followed by alcoholic beverage, one dish foods, health foods, and side dishes.

Evidence for Enhanced Telomerase Activity in Barrett's Esophagus with Dysplasia and Adenocarcinoma

  • Background: Dysplasia and adenocarcinoma developing in Barrett's esophagus (BE) are not always endoscopically identifiable. Molecular markers are needed for early recognition of these focal lesions and to identify patients at increased risk of developing adenocarcinoma. The aim of the current study was to correlate increased telomerase activity (TA) with dysplasia and adenocarcinoma occurring in the setting of BE. Materials and Methods: Esophageal mucosal biopsies were obtained from patients (N=62) who had pathologically verified BE at esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Mucosal biopsies were also obtained from the gastric fundus as controls. Based on histopathology, patients were divided into three groups: 1) BE without dysplasia (n=24); 2) BE with dysplasia (both high grade and low grade, n=13); and 3) BE with adenocarcinoma (n=25). TA was measured by a PCR-based assay (TRAPeze(R) ELISA Telomerase Detection Kit). Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni testing. Results: TA was significantly higher in biopsies of BE with dyplasia and BE with adenocarcinoma than in BE without dysplasia. Subgroup analyses did not reveal any significant correlations between TA and patient age, length of BE, or presence of gastritis. Conclusions: Telomerase activity in esophageal mucosal biopsies of BE may constitute a useful biomarker for the early detection of esophageal dysplasia and adenocarcinoma.

Effects of Obesity, Body Image Dissatisfaction and Dietary Habits on the Risk of Disturbed Eating Attitudes among High School Students in Gyunggi Province, Korea (경기지역 일부 남녀 고등학생의 비만도, 체형불만족도 및 식습관이 식사장애 위험도에 미치는 영향)

  • Rapid shift to western dietary patterns and social drive of thinness would lead to increase the likelihood of developing eating disorders. This study was performed to analyze the associated factors between dietary pattern and self visualization in terms of body shape, which may increase the risk of disturbed eating attitudes among high school students in Korea. A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2009 to 2010 for high school students including both male and female students, from 6 schools in Gyunggi Province, Korea. A total of 766 students self-reported a questionnaire, including weight control practice, perceptions of self body image and ideal body image, dietary habit, and EAT-26 (Eating Attitude Test-26). Logistic regression analysis was used to fine the factors potentially associated with disturbed eating attitudes. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS program (version 9.1). Results showed that disturbed eating attitudes were found in 8.7% of male high school students, and in 20.8% of female high school students. Experience of body weight control was reported by 56.2% of male students and by 87.3% of female students. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, obesity was independently associated with high risk of disturbed eating attitudes in male students [Odds Ratios (OR) 2.96, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.90-9.71]. Body image dissatisfaction (OR 2.77, 95%CI 1.37-5.62) and extended family type (OR 2.70, 95%CI 1.05-6.90) were independently associated with high risk of disturbed eating attitudes, especially in female students. In conclusion, proper efforts in education for obesity and developing self-esteem to reduce the risks of disturbed eating attitudes should be implemented in high school nutrition program.

Impact of dietary fiber intake on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease risk in Korean patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus

  • Purpose: Korean patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity are at a high risk of developing severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study examined the dietary intakes and compared the risks of NAFLD-related complications in Korean patients with T2DM and obesity. Methods: Data from the Korean National Diabetes Program cohort were used to study patients with T2DM. Two hundred and sixty-five obese patients with T2DM (body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2) were classified into NAFLD and non-NAFLD groups. The nutrient intake was analyzed using a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. Anthropometric and biochemical data were also obtained. Statistical analyses were performed to determine the significant differences between the 2 groups. Results: The serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels in obese patients with T2DM and NAFLD were significantly higher than in obese T2DM patients without NAFLD (p < 0.05). The serum glucose and lipid profiles showed no significant differences between the NAFLD and non-NAFLD groups. The carbohydrate, protein, and fat levels also did not differ significantly. The results showed that the fiber intake of the NAFLD and non-NAFLD groups was 14.11 ± 3.86 g/100 kcal and 15.70 ± 4.56 g/1,000 kcal, respectively, showing that the dietary fiber intake of the non-NAFLD group was significantly higher (p < 0.05). A correlation was observed between total fiber intake and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase in either patient group. In addition, the odds ratio of developing NAFLD was 0.29× lower when the fiber was consumed at 125% of adequate intake. Conclusions: A higher dietary fiber intake may reduce the risk of NAFLD in obese patients with T2DM. The dietary intake of Korean obese patients with T2DM should include and be enriched in dietary fiber to aid in preventing and treating NAFLD.
