  • This paper proposes a simple control chart method which can be practically used for asymmetric process data where the distribution is unknown. If we use the Shewhart type control charts which are based on normality assumption for the asymmetric process data, the type I error could increase as the asymmetry increases and the effectiveness of control chart to control variation decreases. To solve such problems, this paper suggests to calculate the control limits based on the quartiles. If we obtain the control limits by such quartile method, the type I error could decrease and it looks much more practical for asymmetric distributed process data.

  • The CCC-r chart is more effective than traditional attribute control charts for monitoring high-quality processes. In-control process parameters are typically unknown and should be estimated when implementing a CCC-r chart. Phase II control chart performance can deteriorate due to the effect of the estimation error. In this paper, we used the standard deviation of average run length (ARL) as well as the average of ARL to quantify the between-practitioner variability in the CCC-r chart performance. The results indicate that the CCC-r chart requires larger Phase I data than previously recommended in the literature in order to have consistent chart in-control performance among practitioners.

  • Properties of statistical process control procedures may not be derived analytically in many cases; however, the application of a Markov chain can solve such problems. This article shows how to derive the properties of the process control procedures using the generated Markov chains when the control statistic satisfies the Markov property. Markov chain approaches that appear in the literature (such as the statistical design and economic design of the control chart as well as the variable sampling rate design) are reviewed along with the introduction of research results for application to a new control procedure and reset chart. The joint application of a Markov chain approach and analytical solutions (when available) can guarantee the correct derivation of the properties. A Markov chain approach is recommended over simulation studies due to its precise derivation of properties and short calculation times.

  • A new approach for prediction of a fault zone ahead of tunnel face by using statistical control charts is suggested and applied to the construction site. $x-R_s$ control charts of RMR parameters were investigated as approaching and passing through fault zone. The abnormal signal from the control charts was observed and analyzed based on statistical criteria. Fault zones in the application area were predicted in advance using this method and it was verified by comparing with observation data like horizontal boring and face mapping.

  • For statistical process control, the process data are collected by the measurement system. But, the measurement system may have instrument error or/and operator error. In the measured values of products, the total observed variance consists of process variance and variance due to error of measurement system. In this paper, we design more practical T-s control chart considering estimated measurement error The effects of measurement error on the expected total cost and design parameters are investigated.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the conformity of Korean Standards(KS) according to agreement on WTO/TBT, and to propose systematic frameworks of preparation, adoption, and application for KS in our enterprises. Significant changes in this establishment, revision, and abrogation include the following divisions; i) statistics-vocabulary and symbols, ii) Shewhart control chart, iii) statistical interpretation of data, iv) sampling procedures for inspection by attributes, v) sequential sampling plans for inspection.

  • Most process date such as semiconductor and petrochemical processes, autocorrelation often exists between observed data, but when the existing SPC(Statistical process control) is applied to these processes, it is not possible to effectively detect the average change of the process. In this paper, when the average change of a certain size occurs in the process data following a specific time series model, the average of the residuals changes according to the passage of time, and the change pattern of the average is introduced around the ARMA(1,1) process. Based on this result, the reference value required in the design process of the CUSUM (Cumulative sum) control chart is appropriately considered by considering the type of the time series model of the process data of the CUSUM control chart that can detect small mean changes in the process and the width of the process mean change of interest. It was confirmed through simulation that it should be selected and used.

  • Process adjustment is a complimentary tool to process monitoring in process control. Although original intention of process adjustment is not identifying a special cause, detection and elimination of special causes may lead to significant process improvement. In this paper, we examine the impact of special causes on process adjustment. The bias in the adjusted output process is derived for each type of special causes, and average run length (ARL) of the Shewhart chart applied to the adjusted output is computed for each special cause types. Numerical results are illustrated for the ARL of the Shewhart chart, thereupon seriousness of special causes on process adjustment is evaluated for each type of special causes.

  • Social network services generate a considerable amount of social data every day on personal feelings or thoughts. This social data provides changing patterns of information production and consumption but are also a tool that reflects social phenomenon. We analyze negative emotional words from daily blogs to detect the change in blooger sentiment using multivariate control charts. We used the all the blogs produced between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2009. Hotelling's T-square control chart control chart is commonly used to monitor multivariate quality characteristics; however, it assumes that quality characteristics follow multivariate normal distribution. The performance of a multivariate control chart is affected by this assumption; consequently, we introduce the support vector data description and its extension (K-control chart) suggested by Sun and Tsung (2003) and they are applied to detect the chage in blogger sentiment.
