Since the first jack-up was built, jackups have become the most popular type of mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) for offshore exploration and development purposes in shallow water. The most pivotal component of the jack-up unit is the leg, which can directly affect the global performance of the unit. In this paper, an investigation into extending the length of the jack up leg is carried out in order to study the enhancement of the rig capability to drill in deeper water approaching the range of the Semisubmersible Drilling Unit (SSDU) (300-1000ft). A study of the performance of a deep-water jack-up unit is performed with different leg lengths. Typical leg scantling dimensions and identical external loads are assigned, and then a detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model is created in order to simulate the jack-up leg unit's structural behavior. A Multi-point Constraint (MPC) element together with the spring element is used to deal with the boundary conditions. Finally, a comparative analysis for five leg lengths is carried out to illustrate their performance, including the ultimate static strength, and weight.
An unrestrained plane rigid body resting on a horizontal surface which shakes horizontally and vertically may assume one of the five modes of response: rest, slide, slide-rock, rock, and free flight. The first four are nontrivial modes of motion. It is important to study which one of these responses is started from rest as in most studies it is often assumed that the initial mode is the particular mode of response. Criteria governing the initiation of modes are first briefly discussed. It is shown that the commencement of response modes depends on the aspect ratio of the body, coefficients of static and kinetic friction at the body-base interface, and the magnitude of maximum base accelerations. Considering the last two factors as random variables, the initiation of response modes is next studied from a probabilistic point of view. Type 1 extreme value and lognormal distributions are employed for maximum base excitations and coefficient of friction respectively. Analytical expressions for computing the probability values of each mode of response are derived. The effects of slenderness ratio, vertical acceleration, and statistical distributions of maximum acceleration and coefficient of friction are shown through numerical results and plots.

Experimental verification in the rig test stage for component development is a vital link between the aeromechanical design and structural integrity validation process. Based on this premise, Non-Intrusive Stress Measuring System was adopted on the axial compressor test rig to measure the static and dynamic tip deflection of all blades by using tip-timing sensors. Through analyzing vibration characteristics, we evaluated the vibratory stresses seen on the blades fatigue critical location; detected synchronous resonances which are the source of High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) in blades; presented non-synchronous vibration response by aerodynamic excitation and individual blade mis-tuning patterns.
This paper presents finite element (FE) based pushover analysis of a reinforced concrete structure with a two-leaf cavity wall (TLCW) to estimate the performance level of this structure. In addition to this, an unreinforced masonry (URM) model was selected for comparison. Simulations and analyses of these structures were performed using the DIANA FE program. The mentioned structures were selected as two storeys and two bays. The dimensions of the structures were scaled 1:1.5 according to the Cauchy Froude similitude law. A shake table experiment was implemented on the reinforced concrete structure with the two-leaf cavity wall (TLCW) at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) in Lisbon, Portugal. The model that simulates URM was not experimentally studied. This structure was modelled in the same manner as the TLCW. The purpose of this virtual model is to compare the respective performances. Two nonlinear analyses were performed and compared with the experimental test results. These analyses were carried out in two phases. The research addresses first the analysis of a structure with only reinforced concrete elements, and secondly the analysis of the same structure with reinforced concrete elements and infill walls. Both researches consider static loading and pushover analysis. The experimental pushover curve was plotted by the envelope of the experimental curve obtained on the basis of the shake table records. Crack patterns, failure modes and performance curves were plotted for both models. Finally, results were evaluated on the basis of the current regulation ASCE/SEI 41-06.
This work presents a new nonlocal hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory for the static, buckling and vibration of nanoscale-beams embedded in an elastic medium. The present model is able to capture both the nonlocal parameter and the shear deformation effect without employing shear correction factor. The nonlocal parameter accounts for the small size effects when dealing with nanosize structures such as nanobeams. Based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, the equations of motion of the nanoscale-beam are obtained using Hamilton's principle. The effect of the surrounding elastic medium on the deflections, critical buckling loads and frequencies of the nanobeam is investigated. Both Winkler-type and Pasternak-type foundation models are used to simulate the interaction of the nanobeam with the surrounding elastic medium. Analytical solutions are presented for a simply supported nanoscale-beam, and the obtained results compare well with those predicted by the other nonlocal theories available in literature.
In this paper the time-dependent closed-form static solution of the suspended pre-stressed biconcave and biconvex cable trusses with unmovable, movable and elastic or viscoelastic yielding supports subjected to various types of vertical load is presented. Irvine's forms of the deflections and the cable equations are modified because the effects of the rheological behaviour needed to be incorporated in them. The concrete cable equations in the form of the explicit relations are derived and presented. From a solution of a vertical equilibrium equation for a loaded cable truss with rheological properties, the additional vertical deflection as a time-function is determined. The time-dependent closed-form model serves to determine the time-dependent response, i.e., horizontal components of cable forces and deflection of the cable truss due to applied loading at the investigated time considering effects of elastic deformations, creep strains, temperature changes and elastic supports. Results obtained by the present closed-form solution are compared with those obtained by FEM. The derived time-dependent closed-form computational model is used for a time-dependent simulation-based reliability assessment of cable trusses as is described in the second part of this paper.
One-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. The mechanical behavior of structures composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. Furthermore, in structures with setback the distribution of the longitudinal stress behaves remarkable nonlinear behavior in the transverse-wise. So, the author proposed the two-dimensional rod theory as an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. This paper proposes how to deal with the two-dimensional rod theory for structures with setback. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures. The transverse-wise nonlinear distribution of the longitudinal stress due to the existence of setback is clarified to originate from the long distance from setback.
For offshore structures, dynamic analysis becomes increasingly important as water depth increases and structural configuration becomes more slender. In the case of dynamic analysis of frame structures, much computer time and high cost are required due to many degrees of freedom, In this paper, a new technique of permutating a segment of frame structure to a beam is developed, which is called here Beam Permutation Technique. The technique is based on definition of stiffness matrix of the beam which is obtained by defining the actions(or forces) required to obtain unit translation or rotation for each degree of freedom wiht al other degree of freedom restrained to zero displacement or rotation. In the technique, an assumption is made that relative positions of nodes in the ends of the segment are not variable, The technique can significantly reduce the degrees of freedom of frame structures and thus the computiong time in dynamic analysis. The natural frequencies and static displacements of the permutated beam are obtained and compared to those of ANSYS with a good agreement.
The dynamic characterization is important in making accurate predictions of the seismic response of the hybrid structures dominated by different damping mechanisms. Different damping characteristics arise from the construction of hybrid structure with different materials: steel for the upper part; reinforced concrete for the lower main part and interaction with supporting soil. The process of modeling damping matrices and experimental verification is challenging because damping cannot be determined via static tests as can mass and stiffness. The assumption of classical damping is not appropriate if the system to be analyzed consists of two or more parts with significantly different levels of damping. The dynamic response of structures is critically determined by the damping mechanisms, and its value is very important for the design and analysis of vibrating structures. A numerical algorithm capable of evaluating the equivalent modal damping ratio from structural components is desirable for improving seismic design. Two approaches are considered to explore the dynamic response of hybrid tower of cable-stayed bridges: The first approach makes use of a simplified model of 2 coupled lumped masses to investigate the effects of subsystems different damping, mass ratio, frequency ratio on dynamic characteristics and equivalent modal damping; the second approach employs a detailed numerical step-by step integration procedure.
Vibration based damage detection is very popular in the civil engineering area. Especially, special structures like dams, long-span bridges and high-rise buildings, need continues monitoring in terms of mechanical properties of material, static and dynamic behavior. It has been stated in the International Commission on Large Dams that more than half of the large concrete dams were constructed more than 50 years ago and the old dams have subjected to repeating loads such as earthquake, overflow, blast, etc.,. So, some unexpected failures may occur and catastrophic damages may be taken place because of theloss of strength, stiffness and other physical properties of concrete. Therefore, these dams need repairs provided with global damage evaluation in order to preserve structural integrity. The paper aims to show the effectiveness of the model updating method for global damage detection on a laboratory arch dam model. Ambient vibration test is used in order to determine the experimental dynamic characteristics. The initial finite element model is updated according to the experimentally determined natural frequencies and mode shapes. The web thickness is selected as updating parameter in the damage evaluation. It is observed from the study that the damage case is revealed with high accuracy and a good match is attained between the estimated and the real damage cases by model updating method.
