  • Basic equations and their solution procedure we derived for the analysis of an annular pump seal in which the rotor has a large static displacement from the centered position. The Bulk-flow is assumed for a control volume set in the seal clearance and the flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in axial and circumferential direction. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses in the control volume. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about an eccentric position. Flow variables are expanded by using Fourier series for the solution procedure. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the 12 elements of rotordynamic coefficients of the eccentric annular pump seal. The results of leakage and rotordynamic coefficients aye presented and compared with the Marquette's experimental results and the San Andres' theoretical analysis.

  • The lateral stability of curved continuous welded rail (CWR) is studied fur buckling prevention. This study includes the influences of vehicle induced loads on the thermal buckling behavior of straight and curved CWR tracks. quasi-static loads model is assumed to determine the uplift region, which occurs due to the vertical track deformation induced by wheel loads of vehicle. Parametric numerical analyses are performed to calculate the upper and lower critical buckling temperatures of CWR tracks. The parameters include track lateral resistance, track curvature, longitudinal stiffness, tie-ballast friction coefficient, axle load, truck center spacing, and the ratio of lateral to vertical vehicle load. This study provides a guideline for the improvement or stability for dynamic buckling in on tracks.

  • In many machines handling lightweight and flexible media such as magnetic tape drives, xerographic copiers and sewing machines, the media must transit an open space. It is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability. The nonlinear theory of the dynamic elastica has often been used to a nonlinear dynamic deflection model. In this paper, the governing equation is derived and simulated by the finite differential method. The parametric cubic curve is applied for defining the guide shape. The dynamic contact conditions suggested by Klarbring is used to predict the direction of the flexible media according to the initial velocity and the friction coefficient. The analysis is also compared to the conventional model, showing that after contacting a $45^{\circ}$ wall, the directions of flexible media of two models are different.

  • The present paper studies the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the rectangular supercritical natural circulation loop (SCNCL) using numerical model of one dimensional. Then the results of this model is confirmed with experimental and benchmark results. Variations with several geometric parameters like loop diameter, riser length, and heater length and operating conditions like heater inlet enthalpy, pressure, friction factor, and inlet and exit loss coefficient on steady-state performance are investigated for various orientations like HHHC, HHVC, VHVC and VHHC of the heater and cooler. The chances of existing static instability (Ledinegg excursion) has been investigated, which reveals that it can arise only in a low inlet enthalpy condition, far from the suggested various orientations of heater and cooler.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of the free stream turbulence intensity and Reynolds number on the heat transfer and flow characteristics In the linear turbine cascade. Profiles of the time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress were measured in the turbine cascade passage. The static pressure and heat transfer distributions on the blade suction and pressure surfaces were also measured. The experiments were made for the Reynolds number based on the chord length, Rec = $2.2{\times}10^4$ to $1.1{\times}10^5$ and the free stream turbulence intensity, $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% to 9.1 %. The uniform heat flux boundary condition on the blade surface was created using the gold film Intrex and the surface temperature was measured by liquid crystal, while hot wire probes were used for the flow measurements. The results show that the free stream turbulence promotes the boundary layer development and delays the flow separation point on the suction surface. It was found that the boundary layer flows on the suction surface for all Reynolds numbers tested with $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% are laminar. It was also found that the heat transfer coefficient on the blade surface increases as the free stream turbulence intensity increases and the flow separation point moves downstream with an increasing Reynolds number. The results of skin friction coefficients are in good agreement with the heat transfer results in that for $FSTI_1{\geq}2.6%$, the turbulent boundary layer separation occurs.

  • The tribological properties and van der Waals attractive forces and the thermal stability of films are very important characteristics of highly hydrophobic fluorocarbon (FC) films for the long-term reliability of nano system. The effect of thermal annealing on films and van der Waals attractive forces and friction coefficient of films have been investigate d in this study. It was coated Al wafer which was treated O2 and Ar that ocatfluorocyclobutane ($C_4_{8}$) and Ar were supplied to the CVD chamber in the ratio of 2:3 for deposition of FC Films. Static contact angle and dynamic contact angle were used to characterize FC films. Thickness of films was measured by variable angle spectroscopy ellipsometer (VASE). Nanotribological data was got by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to measure roughness, lateral force microscopy (LFM) to measure friction force, and force vs. distance (FD) curve to evaluate adhesion force. FC films were cured in N2 and vacuum. The film showed the slight changes in its properties after 3 hr annealing. FTIR ATR studies showed the decrease of C-F peak intensity in the spectra as the annealing time increased. A significant decrease of film thickness has been observed. The friction force of Al surface was at least thirty times higher than ones with FC films. The adhesive force of bare Al was greater than 100 nN. After deposit FC films adhesive force was decreased to 40 nN. The adhesive force of films was decreased down to 10 nN after 24 hr annealing. During 24 hr annealing in $N_2$and vacuum at $100^{\circ}C$ film properties were not changed so much.

  • Recent earthquake records indicate that the vertical component of earthquake loading, generally neglected in seismic slope stability analysis, has a significant influence on the stability. This is particularly true for the earthquakes originating inside the continent, not from its boundaries. Therefore the design of geotechnical structures without consideration of vertical component of earthquake loading may result in unsafe design. In this study, with a consideration of the effect of vertical seismic loading, the horizontal yield seismic coefficients under various slope conditions are estimated, using the lower bound limit analysis. In addition, the equation for the determination of the critical direction (either upward or downward) of vertical seismic loading is proposed.

  • In this study, a three-pad gas foil journal bearing with a diameter of 40 mm and an axial length of 35 mm was modeled to predict the static and dynamic performances with regard to an increasing mechanical preload. The Reynolds equation for an isothermal and isoviscous ideal gas was coupled with a simple elastic foundation foil model to calculate the hydrodynamic pressure solution iteratively. In the prediction results, the journal eccentricity, journal attitude angle, and minimum film thickness decreased, but the friction torque increased with the preload. A quick comparison implied a lower load capacity but higher stability for a three-pad gas foil bearing compared to a one-pad gas foil journal bearing. The direct stiffness coefficients increased with the preload, but the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients decreased. The direct damping coefficient increased in the horizontal direction but decreased in the vertical direction as the preload increased. These model predictions will be useful as a benchmark against experimental test data.

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the safe criteria of portable slipmeter using human perception onto the several different floor surfaces under contaminated conditions. It was difficult to find why many different slipmeters took there's own safe criteria. It is still unclear how thres hold values established in many literatures. Two different subjective slippery evaluating methods, AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) and Friedman test, were used to evaluate the perception of slipperiness of seven different floor surfaces under the contaminated condition with detergent solution. Twelve subjects worn same footwear and walked with self-selected step and cadence along the test floors. The SCOF(Static Coefficient of Friction) obtained for same test conditions with BOT-3000 was compared to perception of slipperiness to establish as a safe criteria. The very high significant correlation(r=0.97) was found between AHP and Friedman test. Also, The high significant correlation(r=0.96) was found between AHP and SCOF obtained with BOT-3000. The results suggested that the SCOF should be greater than 0.63 for safer walking. Perception rating obtained with AHP showed a high correlation with Friedman test and the SCOF obtained with BOT-3000 except for polished tile floor. The safe criteria obtained through this study were similar to ANSI/NFSIB101.1.
