Application of shakedown analysis technique to earthquake-resistant design of ductile moment-resisting steel structures

  • The motivations of the application of shakedown analysis to the earthquake-resistant design of ductile moment-resisting steel structures are presented. The problems which must be solved with this application are also addressed. The illustrative results from a series of static and time history nonlinear analyses of one-bay three-story steel frame and the related discussions have shown that the incremental collapse may be the critical design criterion in case of earthquake loading. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the inelastic excursion mechanism for alternation load pattern, such as in earthquake, should be the sidesway mechanism of the whole structure for the efficient mobilization of the structural energy dissipating capacity and that the shakedown analysis technique can be used as a tool to ensure this mechanism.

  • Now days, voltage stability is well recognized as an important problem. It is well known that voltage stability is influenced by the characteristics of load. Up to present, voltage stability researches were done by the static load modeling, but it is needed that the precise analysis by the view point of dynamic load modeling. In this paper, with induction motor as dynamic load, I show the voltage collapse mechanism followed by load increase. Then I propose the protective method of voltage collapse by using TCSC.

  • A simplified model which incorporates the moment-axial tension interaction of the double-span beams in a column-removed steel frame is presented in this paper. To this end, material and geometric nonlinear parametric finite element analyses were conducted for the double-span beams by changing the beam span to depth ratio and the beam size within some practical ranges. The beam span to depth ratio was shown to be the most influential factor governing the catenary action of the double-span beams. Based on the parametric analysis results, a simplified piecewise linear model which can reasonably describe the vertical, resisting force versus the beam chord rotation relationship was proposed. It was also shown that the proposed method can readily be used for the energy-based progressive collapse analysis of steel moment frames.

Optimal Placement for FACTS to Improve Static Voltage Stability

  • FACTS devices, such as the Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) and Static Var Compensators (SVC), can help increase system load margin to improve static voltage stability. In power systems, because of the high cost and the effect value, the optimal placement for FACTS devices must be determined. This paper investigates the use of the series device (SVC) and the parallel device (TCSC) from the point of load margin to increase voltage stability. It considers the sensitivity of load margin to the line reactance and eigenvector of the collapse. The study has been carried out on the IEEE 14 Bus Test System to verify the validity and efficiency of the method. It reveals that incorporation of FACTS devices significantly enhance load margin as well as system stability.

경량 연료전지 차체프레임 설계 프로세스 (Design Process of Light-weighted Fuel Cell Vehicle Body Frame)

  • This paper presents a design process of light-weighted fuel cell vehicle (FCV) frame to meet design target of natural frequency in early design stage. At first, using validated FE model for the current design, thickness optimization was carried out. Next. optimization process, comprised of beam model size optimization, shell model design and shell model thickness optimization, was investigated for two frame types. In addition, in order to ensure hydrogen tanks safety against rear impact load, structural collapse characteristics was estimated for the rear frame model finally produced from the previous optimization process and, with the target of equal collapse characteristics to the current design model, structural modification with small weight increase was studied through static structural collapse analyses. The same attempt was applied to the front side frame. The results explain that the proposed process enables to design light-weighted frames with high structural performance in early stage.

  • In this paper, a new voltage collapse proximity index (VCPI) based on system apparent power loss sensitivity is proposed. The newly proposed index .lambda.$^{Sloss}$ reaches -.inf. at system voltage collapse point and can be represented by .root..lambda.$^{Ploss}$$^{2}$+.lambda.$^{Qloss}$$^{2}$ where .lambda.$^{Ploss}$ and .lambda.$^{Qloss}$ are the VCPI based on the system active and reactive power loss sensitivity respectively. These indices can be used for the system VAR investment. .DELTA.Q [VAR] is invested, step by step, by the priority of the VCPI index given for each bus. The indices use information from normal power flow equations and their Jacobians. Computation time for deriving .lambda.$^{Sloss}$ is almost same as that for power flow calculation. Two case studies prove the effectiveness of the .lambda.$^{Sloss}$ index and the VAR investment algorithm proposed.

Simplified robustness assessment of steel framed structures under fire-induced column failure

  • This paper proposes a Global-Local Analysis Method (GLAM) to assess the progressive collapse of steel framed structures under fire-induced column failure. GLAM obtains the overall structural response by combining dynamic analysis of the heated column (local) with static analysis of the overall structure (global). Test results of two steel frames which explicitly consider the dynamic effect during fire-induced column failure were employed to validate the proposed GLAM. Results show that GLAM gives reasonable predictions to the test frames in terms of both whether to collapse and the displacement verse temperature curves. Besides, several case studies of a two-dimensional (2D) steel frame and a three-dimensional (3D) steel frame with concrete slabs were conducted by using GLAM. Results show that GLAM gives the same collapse predictions to the studied cases with nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole structure model. Compared with nonlinear dynamic analysis of the whole structure model, GLAM saves approximately 70% and 99% CPU time for the cases of 2D and 3D steel frame, respectively. Results also show that the load level of a structure has notable effects on the restraint condition of a heated column in the structure.

  • 본 연구는 연쇄붕괴 저항성능 평가 시 기둥의 순간적인 제거에 따른 동적효과가 반영된 에너지 기반 근사해석의 적용성을 확인하기 위해 내진 설계된 철골모멘트골조의 예제구조물을 대상으로 분석하였으며, 이를 통해 구조 강건성을 산정하여 연쇄붕괴에 대한 민감도를 평가할 수 있는 방법을 제시하였다. 예제구조물에 대한 적용을 통해 비선형 정적해석 결과를 이용한 에너지 기반 근사해석과 직접동적해석에 대한 결과가 잘 일치하는 것을 검증하였으며, 다른 구조시스템을 가지는 건물의 연쇄붕괴에 대한 구조적 내력성능을 비교하기 위한 수단으로 구조물의 민감도를 평가하였다. 이는 비정상하중에 대하여 구조물이 연쇄붕괴에 저항할 수 있는 최대보유 잔류내력 성능인 구조 강건성을 이용하였고, 본 연구에서 제시한 방법을 통해 연쇄붕괴 해석 및 설계에 편리하게 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Uncertainty reduction of seismic fragility of intake tower using Bayesian Inference and Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation

  • The fundamental goal of this study is to minimize the uncertainty of the median fragility curve and to assess the structural vulnerability under earthquake excitation. Bayesian Inference with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation has been presented for efficient collapse response assessment of the independent intake water tower. The intake tower is significantly used as a diversion type of the hydropower station for maintaining power plant, reservoir and spillway tunnel. Therefore, the seismic fragility assessment of the intake tower is a pivotal component for estimating total system risk of the reservoir. In this investigation, an asymmetrical independent slender reinforced concrete structure is considered. The Bayesian Inference method provides the flexibility to integrate the prior information of collapse response data with the numerical analysis results. The preliminary information of risk data can be obtained from various sources like experiments, existing studies, and simplified linear dynamic analysis or nonlinear static analysis. The conventional lognormal model is used for plotting the fragility curve using the data from time history simulation and nonlinear static pushover analysis respectively. The Bayesian Inference approach is applied for integrating the data from both analyses with the help of MCMC simulation. The method achieves meaningful improvement of uncertainty associated with the fragility curve, and provides significant statistical and computational efficiency.
