Evaluation of Hydration Effect on Human Skin by $^1H$ MRS at 14.1T

  • Purpose: We achieved high resolution MR imaging and spectra of human skin in vitro with using a 14.1 T MRI/MRS system, and evaluated the hydration effect of various cosmetic products by measuring the skin's. moisture concentration. Materials and Methods: We used the Bruker 14.1 T MRI/MRS system with a vertical standard bore that was equipped with a DMX spectrometer gradient system (200 G/cm at a maximum 40 A), RF resonators (2, 5 and 10 mm) and Para Vision software. Spin echo and fast spin echo pulse sequences were employed for obtaining the high resolution MR images. The 3D-localized point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) method was used to acquire the MR spectra. Results: The high resolution MR images and spectra of human skin in vitro were successfully obtained on a 14.1 T system. The water concentration of human skin after applying a moisturizer was higher than that before applying a moisturizer. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that the high-resolution MR images and spectra of human skin from a high field NMR instrument could be applicable to evaluating the hydration state of the stratum corneum.

고정익 항공기 저온 시동 성능의 품질 신뢰성 향상에 관한 실증적 연구 (An Empirical Study on the Quality Reliability of the Start-up performance of the Fixed Wing Aircraft at low temperature)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze low-temperature starting performance of the light attacker and to search and improve the aircraft system including battery and Battery Charge and Control Unit(BCCU). Methods: In order to improve the starting up performance of the light attacker at low-temp, various deficiency cause were derived and analyzed using Fault Tree Analysis method. As a result, it was confirmed there were drawbacks in the charging and discharging mechanism of the battery. The inactivation of the battery's electrolyte at low-temp and the premature termination of the battery charge were the main cause. After long error and trial, we improved these problems by improving performance of battery and optimizing the charging algorithm of BCCU. Results: It was confirmed that the problems of starting up failures were solved through the combined performance test of the battery and BCCU, the ground test using the aircraft system and the operation test conducted by Korea Airforce operating unit for 3 months in winter. Conclusion: This study showed that the improvement of quality reliability was achieved and thus the start-up performance issue of the light attacker has been resolved at low temperature. And it is expected that the design methodologies of temperature-affected electrical system of aircraft will contribute to the development of the aircraft industry in the future.

대전 4공단 소각로 후연소로 모델 연구 (Numerical Study of the Post Combustion Chamber of Grate Type Incinerator in Daejon 4th Industrial Complex)

  • A 3-D axisymmetric computer program is developed to predict the NO behavior in SNCR system for the stoker incinerator with the waste treatment capacity, 200ton/day. To this end a turbulent reacting flow field calculation is made using proper assumption and empiricism. The stoker bed is assumed to be a homogeneous waste-volatilized gaseous state. The initial composition or reactants are assumed based on the data of the ultimate analysis. Turbulent is resolved by k-e model and turbulent reaction is handled by eddy-breakup model harmonized with empirical chemistry data for gaseous combustion, NO and urea reaction. The liquid droplet is traced by Lagrangian method incorporated by aerodynamic drag, Coriolis and crntrifugal forces. Radiation is treated by sensible heat loss model. Calculation results are in good agreement with experimental data at the outlet of post combustion chamber in Daejon 4th industrial complex. The flue gas shows the temperature range of $900\sim1000^{\circ}C$, velocity of 5m/s and NO concentration of 140ppm at the exit while the measured temperature, flue gas velocity and NO concentration are $967^{\circ}C$, $3\sim4m/s$ and $100\sim200ppm$respectively. Using the developed computer program a parametric study has been made with the variation of heat content of waste, castable length and SNCR variables for the determination of proper injector location. In general, the calculated results are consistent and physically acceptable.

APPLICATIONS OF THE HILBERT-HUANG TRANSFORM ON THE NON-STATIONARY ASTRONOMICAL TIME SERIES

  • The development of time-frequency analysis techniques allow astronomers to successfully deal with the non-stationary time series that originate from unstable physical mechanisms. We applied a recently developed time-frequency analysis method, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT), to two non-stationary phenomena: the superorbital modulation in the high-mass X-ray binary SMC X-1 and the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of the AGN RE J1034+396. From the analysis of SMC X-1, we obtained a Hilbert spectrum that shows more detailed information in both the time and frequency domains. Then, a phase-resolved analysis of both the spectra and the orbital profiles was presented. From the spectral analysis, we noticed that the iron line production is dominated by different regions of this binary system in different superorbital phases. Furthermore, a pre-eclipse dip lying at orbital phase ~0:6-0:85 was discovered during the superorbital transition state. We further applied the HHT to analyze the QPO of RE J1034+396. From the Hilbert spectrum and the O-C analysis results, we suggest that it is better to divide the evolution of the QPO into three epochs according to their different periodicities. The correlations between the QPO periods and corresponding fluxes were also different in these three epochs. The change in periodicity and the relationships could be interpreted as the change in oscillation mode based on the diskoseismology model.

  • 화염 내 화학종의 공간적 분포는 화염의 구조 및 연소 특성을 이해하는데 중요한 지표가 되며, 그 계측을 위해 발광분광법 (Optical emission spectroscopy)은 간단하고 비침투적인 진단 방식으로 인해 널리 활용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 측정 line-of-sight 방향의 공간 분해 계측 목적으로 개발된 발광분광기를 이용한 로켓 플룸 내 화학종 (OH radical) 분포 계측의 가능성을 제시하였다. 발광분광기의 측정 신호로부터 바닥 상태의 화학종 농도를 예측하기 위해 화염 내 열적 여기와 화학적 여기 기작을 고려하였으며, 열적으로 여기된 종에 대해서 열적 평형 상태를 가정하였다. 또한 발광분광기의 공간 분해 성능 및 공간에 따른 수광 특성을 보정하기 위한 방법론을 제시하였다.

Visualizing the distributions and spatiotemporal changes of metabolites in Panax notoginseng by MALDI mass spectrometry imaging

  • Background: Panax notoginseng is a highly valued medicinal herb used widely in China and many Asian countries. Its root and rhizome have long been used for the treatment of cardiovascular and hematological diseases. Imaging the spatial distributions and dynamics of metabolites in heterogeneous plant tissues is significant for characterizing the metabolic networks of Panax notoginseng, and this will also provide a highly informative approach to understand the complex molecular changes in the processing of Panax notoginseng. Methods: Here, a high-sensitive MALDI-MS imaging method was developed and adopted to visualize the spatial distributions and spatiotemporal changes of metabolites in different botanical parts of Panax notoginseng. Results: A wide spectrum of metabolites including notoginsenosides, ginsenosides, amino acids, dencichine, gluconic acid, and low-molecular-weight organic acids were imaged in Panax notoginseng rhizome and root tissues for the first time. Moreover, the spatiotemporal alterations of metabolites during the steaming of Panax notoginseng root were also characterized in this study. And, a series of metabolites such as dencichine, arginine and glutamine that changed with the steaming of Panax notoginseng were successfully screened out and imaged. Conclusion: These spatially-resolved metabolite data not only enhance our understanding of the Panax notoginseng metabolic networks, but also provide direct evidence that a serious of metabolic alterations occurred during the steaming of Panax notoginseng.

Eu3+ 이온이 첨가된 란타넘텅스텐산화물의 분광학 특성 (Property of Optical Spectroscopy on the Lanthanum Tungstate doped Eu3+ Ion)

  • 본 연구는 고상법으로 형광체를 합성하였다. 모체 물질은 $La_2W_3O_{12}$에 활성제로 $Eu^{3+}$이온을 첨가하여 활성제 조성변화에 따른 XRD 분석과 여기 및 방출 스펙트럼 및 온도에 따른 형광 스펙트럼 분석과 수명시간을 측정하였다. $La_2W_3O_{12}:Eu^{3+}$의 1 mol%의 XRD 스펙트럼은 ICSD 카드 (78180)에 보고된 데이터 스펙트럼과 비교하였을 때 XRD 스펙트럼이 잘 일치함을 확인 하였다. $La_2W_3O_{12}$ 형광체에 활성제로 $Eu^{3+}$이온 1 mol%를 첨가한 여기 스펙트럼에서는 286 nm 근처에서 286 nm 넓은 전하전달밴드가 관찰된다. 이 전하전달밴드는 $WO_4$그룹과 $Eu^{3+}$이온의 전하 전달 밴드이며 $O^{2-}-W^{6+}$, $O^{2-}-Eu^{3+}$의 ligand-to-metal 전하 전달 흡수가 이루어진다. 350~500 nm 영역에서는 $Eu^{3+}$의 f-f 전이에 의한 피크가 나타났다. 여기 스펙트럼에서 $Eu^{3+}$$^7F_0{\rightarrow}{^5D_4},{^5D_4},{^5L_6},{^5G_4},{^5D_3},{^5D_2}$ 전이에 해당한다. 방출 스펙트럼은 280, 395 nm로 각각 여기한 결과 $Eu^{3+}$이온의 $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$(618nm)에서 강한 피크가 보였다. 희토류 이온이 도핑 되지 않은 $La_2W_3O_{12}$ 형광체를 266 nm로 여기하여 온도에 변화 따른 방출 스펙트럼은 저온에서 상온으로 갈수록 형광의 세기가 약하게 나타났다. 온도에 따른 수명시간은 7 K($114{\mu}s$), 100 K($94{\mu}s$), 200 K($10{\mu}s$), 300 K($0.5{\mu}s$)로 나타났다.

고상 NMR을 이용한 비정질 알루미나의 상전이 연구: 마그마 바다 구성 용융체의 결정화 과정의 의의 (A Solid-State NMR Study of Coordination Transformation in Amorphous Aluminum Oxide: Implication for Crystallization of Magma Ocean)

  • 지구가 마그마 바다 상태에서 현재의 층상화된 내부 구조로 분화되는 진화과정의 체계적인 이해를 위하여 규산염 용융체와 같은 비정질 산화물의 결정화과정 메커니즘 규명이 필요하다. 이를 위하여 결정화 과정에서 수반하는 용융체의 원자구조 변화를 실험적으로 측정하여 결정화 과정을 정량적으로 정립할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 고상 핵자기 공명 분광분석(NMR)을 이용하여 졸겔법으로 합성한 비정질 알루미나($Al_2O_3$)의 온도-가열 시간 변화에 따른 원자구조 변화로부터, 비정질-결정질 상전이 과정을 원자 단위에서 규명하였다. 비정질 $Al_2O_3$$^{27}Al$ 3QMAS NMR 실험 결과 다량의 배위수 4, 5의 알루미늄($^{[4,5]}Al$)과 소량의 배위수 6인 알루미늄($^{[6]}Al$)이 명확히 구분되어 관찰되었고, 973 K와 1,073 K에서 각각 가열시간을 증가시킬수록 배위수 5인 알루미늄($^{[5]}Al$)이 감소하였다. 본 연구에서는 $^{[5]}Al$의 분율을 결정화의 지표로 이용하여 $^{27}Al$ 3QMAS NMR 결과를 정량 분석하였다. 분석을 통해 점진적인 원자구조의 변화로 관찰되는 비정질 산화물의 상전이 과정이 결정화 혹은 비정질 내 구조적 무질서도의 변화와 같은 복합적인 단계로 구성될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 연구 결과는 다양한 자연계의 다성분계 규산염 용융체 결정화 과정 및 마그마 바다의 분화와 지구의 화학적 진화에 대한 원자 단위의 이해증진에 도움을 줄 것이다.

전시작전통제권 단독 행사 추진의 방향 (Directions in Promoting Independence in Operational Control)

  • Former ministers of national defense and foreign affairs, intellectuals such as former and incumbent professors, and various NGO groups are demanding the South Korean government to stop promoting independence in operational control which is currently held by the United States Armed Forces in Korea commander. Although the Korea should exercise operational control independently in the future, orientation on the direction which should be taken under consideration in promoting this transfer should be assumed. First of all, South Korea must sufficiently examine the criticisms and dissenting opinions, and reflect them in promoting independence in operational control. From now on, the South Korean government should reflect the opinions of experts in operational control, and must promote the transfer with national consensus. Unilateral enforcement of the transfer may cause serious errors and aggravate conflicts Second, ROKA's exercise of independence in operational control should take place only after gaining restraint on North Korea's attack against the South, and the issues on nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction(WMD) has been resolved, and a peace regime has been reached. Furthermore, exercise of independence in wartime operational control should be promoted only if there is a guarantee that international trust and the military collaboration will be restored to a level beyond the present state. Third, the USFK and the Korean-US alliance is providing South Korea with national security, not to mention tremendous diplomatical, and economical benefits However, if the alliance between the two countries become weakened due to the exercise of the independence in operational control, we might suffer a great deal of loss. Even though reasonable justification and external independence may be gained through promoting independence in operational control, it should be promoted in a longitudinal manner because national security problems and conflicts may be intensified, and there is no actual profit in doing so. Fourth, if the Korean-US alliance becomes weakened and therefore the United States decides to discuss eastern-asia strategies, North Korea deterrence strategies, and Japanese rearmament issues with other neighboring countries, South Korea may become diplomatically isolated and a subordinate to surrounding countries, destroying the independence we have now instead of restoring it Therefore searching for means to reinforce international trust and collaboration between South Korea and the United States, and leaving ROKA’s independence in operational control as a long term objective would be a more realistic method.

A topological metal at the surface of an ultrathin BiSb alloy film

  • Recently there has been growing interest in topological insulators or the quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase, which are insulating materials with bulk band gaps but have metallic edge states that are formed topologically and robust against any non-magnetic impurity [1]. In a three-dimensional material, the two-dimensional surface states correspond to the edge states (topological metal) and their intriguing nature in terms of electronic and spin structures have been experimentally observed in bulk Bi1-xSbx single crystals [2,3,4]. However, if we want to know the transport properties of these topological metals, high purity samples as well as very low temperature will be needed because of the contribution from bulk states or impurity effects. In a recent report, it was also shown that an intriguing coupling between the surface and bulk states will occur [5]. A simple solution to this bothersome problem is to prepare a topological metal on an ultrathin film, in which the surface-to-bulk ratio is drastically increased. Therefore in the present study, we have investigated if there is a method to make an ultrathin Bi1-xSbx film on a semiconductor substrate. From reflection high-energy electron diffraction observation, it was found that single crystal Bi1-xSbx films (0${\sim}30\;{\AA}A$ can be prepared on Si(111)-$7{\times}7$. The transport properties of such films were characterized by in situ monolithic micro four-point probes [6]. The temperature dependence of the resistivity for the x=0.1 samples was insulating when the film thickness was $240\;{\AA}A$. However, it became metallic as the thickness was reduced down to $30\;{\AA}A$, indicating surface-state dominant electrical conduction. Figure 1 shows the Fermi surface of $40\;{\AA}A$ thick Bi0.92Sb0.08 (a) and Bi0.84Sb0.16 (b) films mapped by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The basic features of the electronic structure of these surface states were shown to be the same as those found on bulk surfaces, meaning that topological metals can be prepared at the surface of an ultrathin film.
