In the design of geotechnical structures, engineers choose either peak or critical state friction angles. Unfortunately, this selection is based on engineer's preference for economy or safety and lacks the assessment of the expected level of deformation. To fill this gap in the design process, this study proposes a strain based empirical method. Proposed method is founded on the experimentally supported assumption that higher dilatancy angles result in more brittle soil response. Using numerous triaxial test data on ten different soils, an empirical design chart is developed that allows the estimation of shear strain at failure based on soil's peak dilatancy angle and mean grain diameter. Developed empirical chart is verified by conducting a small scale retaining wall physical model test. Finally, a design methodology is proposed that makes the selection of design friction angle in structured way possible based on the serviceability limits of the proposed structure.
Off-flavors and odors in fermented cucumbers result from the growth of undesirable microorganisms during the secondary fermentation. Under laboratory conditions using a sterile fermented cucumber slurry medium, the spoilage fermentations were reproduced. Using this system the salt and pH conditions that allow the spoilage to occur were determined by varying the NaCl concentration and pH of the slurry medium. At pH 3, no spoilage was observed, regardless of the salt concentration, while at pH 3.5, pH 4, and pH 4.5, spoilage occurred in the 0 and 2% NaCl samples. For pH 5.0 samples, spoilage products were seen for all NaCl treatments. Based on these results the Preservation Prediction Chart was developed. The Chart may be used for selection of proper pH value and salt concentration for long term storage of fermented cucumber.

Horizontal construction projects such as oil and gas pipeline projects typically involve repetitive-work activities with the same crew and equipment from one end of the project to the other. Repetitive scheduling also known as linear scheduling is known to have superior schedule management capabilities specifically for such horizontal construction projects. This study discusses on expanding the capabilities of repetitive scheduling to account for the variance in production rates and visual representation by developing an automated alignment based linear scheduling program for applying temporal and spatial changes in production rates. The study outlines a framework to apply changes in productions rates when and where they will occur along the horizontal alignment of the project and illustrates the complexity of construction through the time-location chart through a new linear scheduling model, Linear Scheduling Model with Varying Production Rates (LSMVPR). The program uses empirically derived production rate equations with appropriate variables as an input at the appropriate time and location based on actual 750 mile natural gas liquids pipeline project starting in Wyoming and terminating in the center of Kansas. The study showed that the changes in production rates due to time and location resulted in a close approximation of the actual progress of work as compared to the planned progress and can be modeled for use in predicting future linear construction projects. LSMVPR allows the scheduler to develop schedule durations based on minimal project information. The model also allows the scheduler to analyze the impact of various routes or start dates for construction and the corresponding impact on the schedule. In addition, the graphical format lets the construction team to visualize the obstacles in the project when and where they occur due to a new feature called the Activity Performance Index (API). This index is used to shade the linear scheduling chart by time and location with the variation in color indicating the variance in predicted production rate from the desired production rate.

In Shewhart control chart, the average run length(ARL) is calculated using the mean of a conventional geometric distribution(CGD) assuming a sequence of identical and independent Bernoulli trials. In this, the success probability of CGB is the probability that any point exceeds the control limits. When the process is in-control state, there is no problem in the above assumption since the probability that any point exceeds the control limits does not change if the in-control state continues. However, if the out-of-control state begins and continues during the process, the probability of exceeding the control limits may take two forms. First, once the out-of-control state begins with exceeding probability p, it continues with the same exceeding probability p. Second, after the out-of-control state begins, the exceeding probabilities may very according to some pattern. In the first case, ARL is the mean of CGD with success probability p as usual. But in the second case, the assumption of a sequence of identical and independent Bernoulli trials is invalid and we can not use the mean of CGD as ARL. This paper concentrate on that point. By adopting one generalized binomial distribution(GBD) model that allows correlated Bernoulli trials, generalized geometric distribution(GGD) is defined and its mean is derived to find an alternative ARL when the process is in out-of-control state and the exceeding probabilities take the second form mentioned in the above. Small-scale simulation is performed to show how an alternative ARL works.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is of great importance to super high-rise buildings. The Shanghai Tower is currently the tallest building in China, and a complete SHM system was simultaneously constructed at the beginning of the construction of the tower. Due to the variety of sensor types and the large number of measurement points in the SHM system, an online automatic structural health assessment method with few computations and no manual intervention is needed. This paper introduces a structural health assessment method for the Shanghai Tower that uses the coefficients of an autoregressive (AR) time series model as structural state indicators. An analysis of collected data indicates that the coefficients of the AR model are affected by environmental factors, and the principal component analysis method is used to remove the influence of environmental factors. Finally, the control chart method is used to track the changes in structural state indicators, and a plan for online automatic structure health state evaluation is proposed. This method is applied to long-term acceleration and inclination data from the Shanghai Tower and successfully identifies the changes in the structural state. Overall, the structural state indicators of the Shanghai Tower are stable, and the structure is in a healthy state.
6 Sigma is defined as the state of "defect free quality" with only 3.4 defective, goods out of 1 million. Samsung Display Device(SDD) was quick to embark on a new way of quality innovation. The goals of 6 Sigma campaign are established on the foundation of customer satisfaction such as quality, cost and service. Production field of SDD has a special 6 Sigma campaign, SQM(Standard Quality Management). Quality qualification system is introduced and implemented with strong reinforcement. C-S-I(Chart-Solve-Implement) model which was made by Dr. Bajaria(1991) is adopted for the project. All the workers of company will be encouraged to participate in the drive.
This paper presents a technique to implement embedded systems using interrupts of the one-chip microcontroller with many peripherals based on a multiple finite state machines model. The multiple finite state machine model utilizes the structure of FSMD used for hardware design and the features of flow control by interrupts. The main finite state machine corresponds to the main program and the sub-state machines corresponds to the interrupt subroutines. Therefore, interrupts from the peripherals can be processed immediately in the sub-state machines. The request and reply variables are used to interface between the finite state machines. Additional operating system is not necessary for the context switching between the main state machine and the sub-state machine, because the flow-control caused by interrupt can be replaced with the switching. An embedded system modeled on multiple finite state machine with ASM charts can be easily implemented by the conversion of ASM charts into C-language programs. This implementation technique can be easily adopted to the hardware oriented embedded systems because of the detail description of the model and the fast response to the interrupt events in the sub-state machine.
Soil color characteristics were measured by a optical instrument, colorimeter, comparing with the conventional Munsell color chart and related to the chemical properties of soils. Total of the 67 experimental soils were taken from tobacco fields that located at Cheongwon, Enmseong, Boeun, Goesan, Jincheon, and Chungju countries in Chungbuk Province having the 29 soil series including Samgag. The values of L, a, and b measured by colorimeter were closely related with hue, value, and chroma of Munsell color chart, respectively, indicating the quantitative measurement of soil color characteristics. The standard deviations in measurement for L, a, and b values was smaller in soil sample passed by 0.5 mm sieve than 2 mm sieve, suggesting that soil particle size less than 0.5 mm was better condition for colorimeter measurement. The values of L and b measured by colorimeter showed a tendency to decrease as increase of soil moisture content but nearly on difference with moisture condition for the value of a. However, correlation coefficient between air dry samples and wet soil samples(soil moisture retension of -10 hPa) for measurements of L, a and b value were more than 0.9 showing the same tendency in measurement. Consequently, air dry soil passed by 0.5 mm sieve was recommended to desirable conditions for stable measurement by colorimeter. The measured values by colorimeter were significantly correlated with organic matter, CEC, exchangeable Ca and Mg, showing the highest correlation coefficient between L value and organic matter.
