The current study was undertaken to select the crude drug showing life prolonging effect on the starved rats(Sprague-Dawley) and elucidate the reaction mechanism there of. As distilled water extracts prepared from twenty kinds of natural drugs were administered orally to female starved rats, Bupleuri Radix demonstrated the most prominent effect with 34.6% increment in the survival time. To investigate underlying mechanism of life prolonging effect of Bupleuri Radix, the concentrations of adrenocorticosteroids(corticsterone, testosterone and aldosterone) and enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase(GOT), glutamate pyrurate transaminase(GPT) were assayed in the serums of rats starved for, 2, 4 and 6 days respectively. The results manifested much elevated values of corticosterone, aldosterone(2 days) and rather decreasing tendency afterwards, specially in the late periods of starvation(6 days). With respect to such a considerable changes according to starvation periods, Bupleur Radix restored these values much near to normal suggesting that Buplerum Radix may play a life prolonging action during starvation probably through reinforcing the homeostatic properties of corticosteroids and some enzyme activities.
The experiments were performed to determine whether lidocaine interferes with the utilization of lipid as source of energy fuel for the contractile process by the isolated rat atria. Rats were starved for two days in order to inerease the lipid content of the heart. Atria from starved rats were better able to maintain their contractility in the absence of exgenous substrate, and also were more resistant to depression by lidocaine than atria from fed rats. Starvation results in a marked loss of body weight in rats. In contrast to the starved rats, the body weight of fed rats inereased with time. The smaller reduction in contractile activity of atria from the starved rats may suggest that endogenous lipid accumulates during starvation period and is used as an energy source for the contractile process in the face of a lidocaine-induced blockade in glycolysis.
The abilities of metabolic substrates, glucose, pyruvate, and acetate to produce a maximal increase in the force of contraction of substrate-depleted atria from fed rats were compared to those from starved rats, in order to observe the effect of starvation on substrate utilization of the myocardium. Starvation results in a marked loss of body weight in rats. In contrast to the starved rats, the body weight of fed rats increased with time. When placed in substrate-free medium, atria from fed rats showed marked decline in contractile force. In contrast to the atria from fed rats, the substrate-depleted atria from starved rats showed much less decline of the force of contraction. In the substrate-free medium, abilities of glucose, pyruvate, and acetate to produce a maximal increase in the force of contraction of atria from fed rats were much greater than those from starved rats. The data from these studies indicate that in the substrate-free medium atria from starved rats utilize much less exogenous substrates than those from fed rats. These results suggest that starvation has no deleterious effect on contractile activity of the myocardium, and the starvation increase the storage of readily metabolizable endogenous substrstes useful for the functional activity of the isolated heart.

The present study explored the short-term effects of dietary conjugated-linoleic acid (CLA) on liver lipid metabolism in starved/refed Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Male OLETF rats (12 weeks old) were starved for 24 hours, then refed for 48 hours with either a CLA diet [7.5% CLA and 7.5% Safflower oil (SAF)] or a SAF control diet (15% SAF). The results demonstrated a 30% reduction of hepatic triglyceride (TG) concentration in the CLA group when compared to the control group. Liver cholesterol concentration was also 26% lower in the CLA fed rats. The activity of mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase, the rate-limiting enzyme of fatty acid oxidation, was moderately elevated by 1.2-fold in the livers of the CLA group when compared to the control. In contrast, phosphatidate phosphohydrolase, the rate-limiting enzyme for TG synthesis, was found to be 20% lower in the livers of the CLA-fed rats. Therefore, dietary CLA evidently lowers liver lipid concentrations through a reduced TG synthesis and enhanced fatty acid oxidation in starved/refed OLETF rats.
It has been known that $\gamma$-irradiation usually induces cell death in regenerating stem cell in normal tissues like skin, intestine and hematopoietic organ. The experiment were carried out to evaluate the early response of radiation injury in radiosensitive and intermediate radiosensitive tissues in feeding and starving rats with the doses of 3.5 and 7.0 Gy. The results of the study showed that the histological phenomenon was apoptosis in the doses of the radiation as the early response of tissue injury. Apoptosis were showed organ-specific and cellular specific responses suggesting that the selection of apoptosis be exactly focused on highly renewal organs and cells. It was interesting that the rats starved for 72 hours prior to irradiation induced less apoptosis in liver than fed rats. As for cellular responses it appeared that apoptotic cells were mostly distributed in ductal or periportal cells in liver of feeding rats unlikely in liver of Starving rots which showed no difference in zonal distribution. In salivary gland apoptotic cells in fed rats were highly induced in intercalating and ductal cell population than in acinar cell population although unlikely in starved rats. This study showed the value of apoptosis using the detection system of TUNEL for evaluating cellular damage after radiation injury and the diminished effect of starvation on cell damage after ionizing irradiation.
SDS gel electrophoresis has been employed to examine the changes in distribution of three major classes of nuclear proteins extracted from isolated liver nuclei in response to refeeding of starved rats with a fat-free high carbohydrate diet and following insulin injection into streptozotocin-diabetic rats. The relative quantity of electrophoretically separated proteins in the fraction showed marked changes with 0.14 NaCl extracts, but not with histones and phenol soluble non-histone proteins. During 48h starvation at least five proteins ranging in molecular weight from 50,000 to 180,000 daltons decreased relative to normal controls while a protein with 36,000 daltons was increased. Refeeding the starved rats with a high carbohydrate diet reversed these changes over 24 h. Insulin injection into streptozotocin-diabetic rats increased levels of the set of five 0.14 M NaCl soluble proteins identified from refeeding experiment of starved rats. The 36,000 daltons protein was also diminished. These results indicate that changes in distribution of certain nuclear proteins in 0.14M NaCl extracts are associated with the control of nuclear activity ralated to known insulin-signalled modulation and induction of cytosolic lipogenic enzymes.
This study was conducted to investigate effects of Dansambohyultang on serum gastrin, secretin release and CNS in rats and mice. One group of seven rats was intactly in normal condition, the other group of seven rats was respectively heated, starved, and stressfully immobilized. The third group of seven rats was provided with Dansambohyultang before the stress, and the forth one after the stress. And, gastrin concentration and secretin concentration were measured. Mice were studied with regard to convulsion time, total sleep time and analegic effects on cental nerve system. The results were as follows: 1. Gastrin concentration was significantly decreased, and secretin concentration was significantly increased. 2. Analegic effect by acetic acid method was recognizably observed. 3. Effect of total sleep time done by pentobarbital-Na was recognizably observed. 4. Anti-convulsion effects induced by strychnine, picrotoxin and caffeine were recognizable. It is inferred from above results that Dansambohyultang inhibits gastin release, stimulates secretin release and palliate the pain.

This study was designed to determine the protective effect of Rumex Aquaticus Herba extracts containing quercetin-3-${\beta}$ -D-glucuronopyranoside (ECQ) on experimental reflux esophagitis. Reflux esophagitis was induced by surgical procedure. The rats were divided into seven groups, namely normal group, control group, ECQ (1, 3, 10, 30 mg/kg) group and omeprazole (30 mg/kg) group. ECQ and omeprazole groups received intraduodenal administration. The Rats were starved for 24 hours before the experiments, but were freely allowed to drink water. ECQ group attenuated the gross esophagitis significantly compared to that treated with omeprazole in a dose-dependent manner. ECQ decreased the volume of gastric juice and increased the gastric pH, which are similar to those of omeprazole group. In addition, ECQ inhibited the acid output effectively in reflux esophagitis. Significantly increased amounts of malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and the mucosal depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH) were observed in the reflux esophagitis. ECQ administration attenuated the decrement of the GSH levels and affected the MDA levels and MPO activity. These results suggest that the ECQ has a protective effect which may be attributed to its multiple effects including anti-secretory, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory actions on reflux esophagitis in rats.
Labelling of chromatin proteins with 32P was observed after incubating isolated liver nuclei with $[{\gamma}-32P]$ ATP for 5 minutes at $37^{\circ}C$. The pattern of labelling with 32P was examined on SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with nuclei from rats maintained in a starvation state for 48 hours, following refeeding for 12 hours; and from fed streptozotocin-diabetic rats with insulin injection 6 hours before sacrifice. With 48h starved rat liver nuclei the level of phosphorylation for 0.14M NaCl soluble proteins was decreased in the molecular weights between 41,000 and 200,000 daltons relative to normal controls. Refeeding the starved rats reversed the change of phosphorylation pattern over 12 hour The level of phosphorylation for five phenol soluble non-histone proteins with molecular weights above 59,000 daltons was somewhat decreased with 48h starved rat liver nuclei as compared with that of normal controls. Starvation also decreased the phosphorylation level of major histones in relation to normal controls. The experiment with insulin injection into fed streptozotocin-diabetic rats showed the tendency to increase phosphorylation of 0.14M NaCl soluble proteins (130,000 dalton protein) and phenol soluble non-histone proteins (155,000 dalton protein). The phosphorylation level of histones appeared to be invariant under the experimental conditoins employed here. These results suggest the possibility that the phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of 0.14M NaCl soluble proteins and $H_1$ histone precede those of other chromatin associated nuclear proteins, It is of interest to find that insulin signal was correlated to phosphorylation of nuclear proteins while glucagon signet dephosphorylated nuclear proteins.
This study was made to understand a hypoglycemic action of the fat soluble fraction of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats by determining the activities of several enzymes related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism as well as several blood component levels such as glucose and ketone bodies, and non-esterified fatty acids. Albino rats (Sprague Dawley, 170-200g, 3) were injected once with 70mg streptozotocinhg body weight intraperitoneally and fed with ordinary diet for 7 days, and then the fat soluble fraction (5 mg~20 mg/day/rat) was injected intraperitoneally once a day for three days to rats having high blood glucose level over 340 mg/100ml. After a final injection of the fat soluble fraction, rats u.ere starved for 16 hours followed by the analysis of blood serum and liver enzymes. It was found that increased levels of glucose, ketone bodies and free fatty acids in streptozotocin induced rats were decreased appreciably by administration of the fat soluble fraction. However, the amount of administered fat soluble fraction did not show any significantly different hypoglycemic action. Decreased activities of glucokinase, phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and acetyl CoA carboxylase of the liver of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats were greatly modified suggesting that a hypoglycemic action of the fat soluble fraction was also appreciable as ginseng saponin fraction. We also compared a hypoglycemic action of the fat soluble fraction prepared from American ginseng and Chinese ginseng with that of Korean pain ginseng. 핀o significant difference of the hypoglycemic activity was observed between the above ginseng fat soluble fractions, suggesting that a study of the fat soluble fraction might be one of the most interesting subjects relating to diabetic hyperglycemia in the near future.
