The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the standing balance could be influenced by the different foot positions. Seventeen patients with hemiplegia were tested for the static and dynamic balance under the different foot positions. In the balance test, subject stood by bearing weight on one foot, and the other foot was positioned in three different positions (symmetric, $45^{\circ}$ anterolateral, and anterior position). This study used the Kinesthetic ability trainer (KAT2000) to measure the standing balance. The results were as follows: 1) There were significant differences in the static standing balance in different foot positions with both weight-bearing on the paretic limb and on the nonparetic limb (p<.05). 2) There were also significant differences in the dynamic standing balance in different foot positions with both weight-bearing on the paretic limb and on the nonparetic limb (p<.05). 3) There was a significant difference when the paretic weight-bearing and the nonparetic weight-bearing were compared (p<.01). 4) when the paretic weight-bearing and the nonparetic weight-bearing were compared, anterior foot position showed a significant difference in the dynamic standing balance (p<.05), but $45^{\circ}$ anterolateral foot position did not show a significant difference (p>.05). In this study, the standing balance showed a significant difference according to different foot positions in hemiparetic patients, and standing balance was better when they stood by bearing weight on the nonparetic limb. These results indicate that it is a necessary to consider both weight-bearing limb and foot position not only in the rehabilitation program but also in achieving the stability in the independent life.
Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the test-retest reliability of balance measurements in older adults using balance measurement system(Good Balance). Methods: The subjects consisted of 49 female and 20 male in community-dwelling older adults. This study used a repeated-measure design. Each subject completed all the different tests once and they were then repeated with 2 minutes in between. Repeated two-ways analysis of variance(ANOVA), representing two test times and both sexes, was calculated for each of the two dependent variables. Intraclass correlation coefficients(ICCs) were used to assess the test-retest reliability. Results: 1) There was not significant difference between test and retest for mediolateral sway speed and anterioposterior sway speed under conditions of normal standing with eyes open, normal standing with eyes closed and semitandem standing with eyes open. There was not significant difference between males and females for mediolateral sway speed and anterioposterior sway speed under conditions of normal standing with eyes open, normal standing with eyes closed and semitandem standing with eyes open. There were not the interaction effects between genders and test time under three conditions. 2) The reproducibility between test and retest was excellent for anterioposterior sway speed(ICC=.77) under condition of normal standing with eyes open, and for mediolateral sway speed(ICC=.76) and anterioposterior sway speed(ICC=.84) under condition of semitandem standing with eyes open. The reproducibility between test and retest was fair to good for mediolateral sway speed(ICC=.64) under condition of normal standing with eyes open, for mediolateral sway speed(ICC=.63) and anterioposterior sway speed(ICC=.75) under condition of normal standing with eyes closed. Conclusion: Balance tests in older adults using balance measurement system(Good Balance) demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability.

Objective: To investigate the appropriate position for abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) exercise by rehabilitative ultrasound image. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-eight young adults with no history of low back pain participated in the study. Three positions compared were crook lying position with hip $60^{\circ}$ flexion, standing position with the feet hip width apart and knees straight, and saddle standing positionunsupported with the knees $20^{\circ}$ flexed. Once in the appropriate position, the subjects were verbally cued to draw in their abdominal wall, with the intention of pulling their navel inward toward their lower back. The thickness of each transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles were measured via ultrasound and recorded at the end of inspiration. Results: When compared to the TrA thickness of rest, the TrA thickness was significantly increased in all three positions (crook lying, standing, and saddle standing) during the ADIM (p<0.05). IO thickness was significantly greater in standing and saddle standing than in crook lying (p<0.05). EO thickness was constant in all the three positions. Conclusions: The present study suggests that standing and saddle standing positions could be recommended for the ADIM to maximize recruitment of the TrA and IO activation. Specifically, the saddle standing position with knees flexed to $20^{\circ}$ was observed to increase the TrA activation more than the standing position. These findings should be considered when core stability exercises such as the ADIM are conducted.
This paper is concerned with the designing and making power standing wheelchair. This wheelchair is studied based on the mechanical and electrical engineering concepts and theories. The mechanical theories are composed of statics and dynamics knowledges that are related with moving and standing position. Basically the static and dynamic stability is the most important element in designing and making the real size model. The linear actuator is used in the standing mechanism and the joystick controlled by hand is attached on the arm rest. The real size model is made and also investigated through the design specifications by test drive. Finally, this paper proves the possibility of commerical production of power standing wheelchair.
PURPOSE: This study was performed to investigate the effect of Low-dye Taping on muscle activity during single-leg standing in subjects with flexible flatfoot. METHODS: Thirteen able-body volunteers who had flexible flatfoot were recruited for this study. Subjects were measured navicular drop test to evaluate pronation of foot and muscle activity during single-leg standing before and after taping. The muscle activity was recorded using surface EMG from the tibialis anterior and the peroneus longus during single-leg standing on stable and unstable surface. RESULTS: The results show that the navicular drop height and the tibialis anterior muscle activity were significantly decreased after Low-dye taping. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that Low-dye taping could be useful in managing overuse of the tibialis anterior by reducing their level of activation during single-leg standing.
Distribution and standing crops of seedling and sapling as undergrowing tree were investigated in a Pinus rigida forest. The relative light intensity(RLI) on the ground level was 3.9∼59.3% which indicates a wide range. Under this range of RLI seedlings and saplings distribute well in the stand. Eight trees were selected from the stand, then measured dry weight of stem, branches and leaves using thestratified clip technique. A possible relationship between the diameter at the bottom of the tree (Do) and standing crops was investigated. As Do increased from 0.8cm (T1) to 7.2cm (T8), the standing crops also increased from 42.6g to 7,410.4g. Since semi-log values between Do and standing crops clearly indicates a straight line, there is close relationship between these two factors. Therefore it is possible to estimate the standing crops of seedling and sapling by measuring Do. Productive structure shows that phytosynthetic layer is located above the 1/2 height of the tree and maximum photosynthetic layer apperars on 2/3 level in height.
Body weight support treadmill training is a new and promising therapy in gait rehabilitation of patients with hemiplegia. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of body weight support treadmill training on gait and standing balance in patients with hemiplegia. Eighteen patients with hemiplegia participated in the study. A 10 m-timed walk test, measurements of step length and standing balance score were administered. Intervention consisted of body weight support treadmill training five times a week for 2 weeks. The data were analyzed by paired t-test. Body weight support treadmill training scoring of standing balance, step length and 10 m-timed walk test showed a definite improvement. Body weight support treadmill training offers the advantages of task-oriented training with numerous repetitions of a supervised gait pattern. The outcomes suggest that patients with hemiplegia can improve their gait ability and standing balance through body weight support treadmill training.
Lifting chair is a typical assistive product to aid for standing up and sitting down for persons with disability. It is particularly useful for the elderly persons whose muscular system is weakened by degenerative joint disease. This paper describes biomechanical assessments of lifting chair with hip-up function. In experiments we measured 3D motion and electromyographic(EMG) signal on the femoral muscle when subject performs the standing motion on the predetermined seat height. Based on assessment of the standing motion, we select the hip-up angle as 15 degrees to cover the relative femoral angle when EMG peak value is appeared. Using an implemented prototype lifting chair with hip-up function we perform standing experiments with five subjects. The experimental results show that the lifting and hip-up functions are effective to assist for standing up motion with less muscle force.
The study of standing crop of the ground vegetation under the coniferous stands was pursuited in regard of soil nutrients at Kwangnung plantation from May to Octoher, 1971 and 1991. The coniferous stands implied pine and larch associations of which the young stands of each as-sociation were 9~12 years and the older one 40~70 years. The larch stands were more plentiful in species than in the pine stands and the Festuca ovina and Oplismenus burmannii each were dominant species of pine and larch stands. The standing crop of pine stands is from 98.02g /$m^2$ to 385.32g /$m^2$ The standing crops of those stands showed great increase from June to August when the air temperature and rainfall were fairly high. The standing crop has correlation to total nitrogen and organic matter in the soil.
