  • The lowest power mode (passive-standby mode) was proposed for reducing the power consumption of set-top boxes in a standby state when not receiving content. However, low-power set-top boxes equipped with the lowest power mode have been rarely commercialized because of their low-quality user experience. In the lowest power mode, they deactivates almost all of operational modules and processes, and thus require dozens of seconds for activation latency (that is, the latency for activating all modules of the set-top boxes in a standby state). They are not even updated in a standby state because they deactivate their network interfaces in a standby state. This paper proposes an adaptive standby mode scheduling method for improving the user experience of such boxes. Set-top boxes using the proposed method can analyze the activation pattern and find the frequently used time period (that is, when the set-top boxes are frequently activated). They prepare for their activation during this frequently used time period, thereby reducing the activation latency and enabling their update in a standby state.

  • Commercial home appliances using remotely controlled systems consume electric power while in standby mode to prepare for receiving a remote turn-on signal. The proposed power system can significantly reduce standby power consumption without increasing cost. Furthermore, since a Electronic Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) is used as an auxiliary power storage element, the life cycle is longer and system reliability can be better than with existing approaches. When the energy of the EDLC is not sufficient for turning on the appliance, the power system charges the EDLC without affecting the main system. The proposed power system is verified with a commercial LCD TV and a 3.93mW standby consumption is obtained. This standby consumption can be regarded as zero standby equipment according to the IEC-62031 standard.

  • The International Standby Practices (ISP98) has been carefully crafted for use with standby letters of credit. ISP98 is expected to become widely used for standby letters of credit commencing January 1, 1999. These new practices have been ratified and jointly published by the International Chamber of Commerce- the same organization that Provided us with the Uniform Customs and Practices for Documentary Credits, UCP500. The intention behind drafting ISP98 was to consolidate common and accepted practices applying to Standby Letters of Credit and to set a worldwide standard. ISP98 gives issuing organizations a set of practices that are free from the anomalies that arise when UCP500 is applied to Standby Letters of Credit This paper focuses on ISP98 provisions that may lead to changes in forms of standby letters of credit and reimbursement agreements, that may lead to changes in standby practices, that may alert parties to issues they had not previously focused upon, or that parties may wish to limit or vary, This Paper also focuses on differences between ISP98 and the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits, 1993 revision, ICC Publication No. 500(UCP 500).

  • Standby power, so called an electric vampire, is a power which is consumed by appliances and office equipments connected to power sources while the devices are not performing. Sensor luminaires consist of PIR(Pyroelectric Infrared Ray) sensor, illuminance sensor(CdS), and light source. The sensor luminaires are one of the devices that consume a huge amount of standby power; it stands by for an average sum of 23 hours a day and performs only when moving subjects are detected under it, which barely takes up an hour per day. The purpose of this study is to provide basic materials to the selection of standby power items and to enable to explore a way to decrease the standby power by measuring and analyzing the power consumption of sensor luminaires. According to the results, the average standby power of LED sensor luminaires is 1.1W which is significantly higher than other products, and decrease in the standby power consumption of SMPS is important through the measurement.

  • Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology with various transfer mechanisms such as inductive coupling, magnetic resonance and capacitive coupling is being widely researched. Until now, power transfer efficiency (PTE) and power transfer capability (PTC) have been the primary concerns for designing and developing WPT systems. Therefore, a lot of studies have been documented to improve PTE and PTC. However, power consumption in the standby mode, also defined as the no-load mode, has been rarely studied. Recently, since the number of WPT products has been gradually increasing, it is necessary to develop techniques for reducing the standby power consumption of WPT systems. This paper investigates the standby power consumption of commercial WPT products. Moreover, a standby power reduction technique for WPT systems via magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) with a parallel resonance type resonator is proposed. To achieve a further standby power reduction, the voltage control of an AC/DC travel adapter is also adopted. The operational principles and characteristics are described and verified with simulation and experimental results. The proposed method greatly reduces the standby power consumption of a WPT system via MRC from 2.03 W to 0.19 W.

  • Electric boilers (EBs) are the backup steam source for the auxiliary steam system of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plants. When the plant is in normal operations, the EB is always in hot standby status. However, the current hot standby operation strategy has problems of slow response, high power consumption, and long operation time. To solve these problems, this study focuses on the optimization of hot standby operations for the EB system. First, mathematical models of an electrode immersion EB and its accompanying deaerator were established. Then, a control simulation platform of the EB system was developed in MATLAB/Simulink implementing the established mathematical models and corresponding control systems. Finally, two optimization strategies for the EB hot standby operation were proposed, followed by dynamic simulations of the EB system transient from hot standby to normal operations. The results indicate that the proposed optimization strategies can significantly speed up the transient response of the EB system from hot standby to normal operations and reduce the power consumption in hot standby operations, improving the dynamic performance and economy of the system.

  • This paper presents a development of the ELB (Electronic Leakage Breaker) based on a reduction of standby power dissipation as with maintaining conventional performance. In order to minimize the standby power consumption of the conventional circuit, we analyze the cause of 0.3W dissipation of the circuit. By employing the TR-triggered circuit to secure the standby power of 0.10W after testing and evaluation while CRD inserted circuit showed the performance of 0.17W levels. Implementing SMPS IC and TNR device circuit was designed and showed of its power to less than 0.06W. Developed ELB is expected much standby power savings in large power distributor or heavy users.

  • In this paper, we designed the off-line PWM(Pulse width modulation) control IC for flyback type power converter to reduce the standby power consumption. In normal state, this off-line PWM IC generates the output pulse with $40\sim60kHz$ frequency and duty ratio of $20\sim88%$. When SMPS operates in standby mode, this IC generates the output pulse with 33kHz frequency and duty ratio of 1 %. SPICE simulation was performed to verify the standby power consumption of the power converter with designed of-line PWM IC. Power converter with designed off-line PWM IC consumes less than 0.3W when it operates in standby mode condition.
