  • The Pulse diagnosis is in the boundary of the Four Examinations, and it is called 切診, or palpation. It has a great impact on people in reminding of the Traditional Medicine that it is probably the first thing that people think of when they hear about Traditional Medicine. Hu-Jun quoted in the Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine "東醫寶鑑" that the doctor finds out the deficiency and the excess of the meridian of the patiant through the pulse, and that it is of the utmost necessity to know the "deficiency and the excess" of the meridian to decide the formula (君臣佐使) of the herbal medicine and the acupuncture/moxibustion treatment. The research on the studies of pulse diagnosis have been concentrated on the origin, history, and the theory of the pulse diagnosis throughout the years; however, the number of research on the image from the classics on pulse diagnosis have been less. With this in mind, this paper was written to study more on the origin and the history of the pulse diagnosis as well as to study on the image of pulse diagnosis shown on the classics on Traditional Medicine in China and Korea. The history of the pulse diagnosis has its root on the attempt to find out what is happening inside the body through the indication of the small changes of the pulse that is shown on the outer boundaries of the body. There were various kinds of pulse diagnosis including "Three positions and nine indicators method" and "Carotid pulsation and wrist pulse method" in the ancient period, and wrist pulse-taking method became the most popular since the completion of studying on palpation by 初보. The image of the palpation helps the rudimentary practitioners of Traditional Medicine. They are divided into two large categories, which are the area of diagnosis and the shape of the pulse itself. The historical classics including the image of the pulse diagnosis can be found since the Song Dynasty of China. There are various kinds of image of pulse diagnosis in the classic such as "The picture of the hand meridian" from "脈訣指掌病式圖說", "The picture of the image of meridian" from "察病指南", "The picture of the Seven exterior and Eight interior" from "校正圖注脈訣", and "The picture of the six parts of meridian" from Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine "東醫寶鑑". The Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine "東醫寶鑑" have analyzed the basic theories and made up the standards of pulse diagnosis by establishing "The picture of the six parts of meridian" based on "The method of placing the viscera and bowels corresponding to cun-guan-qi, or the meridian".

  • A total of 1,235 studies were retrieved on June 23, 2019, from 3 databases. Selected 59 studies were evaluated by year of publication, study type, subject condition/disease, acupoint, standards for reporting interventions in clinical trials of moxibustion (STRICTOM), Cochrane risk of bias (RoB), and risk of bias assessment tool for non-randomized study (RoBANS). Most studies were conducted in 2011, after which the number of studies decreased. The most common study type was 25 case reports (CR), 16 uncontrolled clinical trials (UCT), 11 randomized controlled trials (RCT), and 7 controlled clinical trials (CCT). Moxibustion treatment was mainly used for musculoskeletal and circulatory diseases/conditions. A total of 83 acupoints were used, A-shi points being the most used. As for STRICTOM, an average of 7.4 items were satisfactory for UCT and CR without a control group, and an average of 9.4 items were satisfactory for RCT and CCT. RCT was assessed using the RoB, and many items were rated as uncertain. In this study, the need for RCT of moxibustion treatment in Korea was identified. The detailed description of study methods and results will provide evidence for the efficacy of moxibustion treatment in preventive and therapeutic aspects of Korean traditional medicine.

  • Objectives : Weights and measures (度量衡) in Korean traditional medicine have been changed in many dynasties and countries. Thus, measurements of chon (寸) and cheok (尺) have been considered as symbolical meaning in recent studies on meridians and acupoints. The present study was made to settle up standard measurement by surveying length of each parts of upper limb as follows. Methods : To calculate length of 1 chon (寸), the length of each part was divided into the numbers of chon (寸) as shwon in ${\ll}$Goldo Hwangjenaegyeong-yeongchu (靈樞 骨度篇)${\gg}$; the chon (寸) length in ${\ll}$Goldo Hwangjenaegyeong-yeongchu (靈樞 骨度篇)${\gg}$ was compared with the chon (寸) length which is calculated by dividing human average hight into 75 chon. Results : Increment of length of 1 chon (寸) did not change as increment of height in subjects. Length of 1 chon (寸) in height is representative of length of 1 chon (寸) in each parts of upper limb. Conclusions : We suggest that most suitable length of 1 chon (寸)for the standard measurement of acupoint location is 2.20 ${\pm}$ 0.17 cm based on length of elbow joint to wrist joint.

  • Objectives : Term standardization is the most important for knowledge information in every study. There are several tries to make terminology standards in Korean Traditional Medicine(KTM). We, authors took a review on romanized prescription nomenclature of main titles in Herbal Formula Science to criticize the ways of romanized prescription nomenclature. Methods : We extract romanized prescription name from Vol. 11, No. 1 to latest Issue Vol. 21, No. 1, Herbal Formula Science. Results : The Korean Academy of Oriental Medicine Prescription has guideline for romanized prescription nomenclature. However, only 6 out of 147 romanized prescription name are confirmed with guideline. In addition, 58 out of 142 names are italicized without guideline. Also there are several ways of marking for prescription names. Conclusions : For making knowledge information and easy searching for terms, we need normative regulations for romanized prescription nomenclature by the Society of Korean Medicine level.

  • Background: Although several efforts have been made recently to grade the severity of sublingual veins, these methods still meet some problems: clinicians' subjectivity and diversity of lighting conditions. Objectives: The purpose of our study was to quantify the severity of sublingual veins using CDs (color differences), and to verify clinical validity of the parameters of sublingual veins using CDs. Methods: We photographed the inferior surface of subjects' tongue from 74 subjects. CDs were computed through two sets of mean $L^*a^*b^*$ values extracted from BRC (black reference color) and the inferior surface of the tongue. We assumed that SVI (sublingual veins index) normalized percentage of a reciprocal of CDs between BRC and the inferior surface of the tongue including sublingual veins and BISV (black index of sublingual veins) percentage of a reciprocal of CDs between BRC and the main trunk of sublingual veins could be applied as quantitative parameters of sublingual veins and examined whether there are meaningful correlations between CDs and subjective grading by the clinicians or not. Results: There were high positive correlations of SVI and BISV to clinician evaluation respectively (r=0.715, 0.634). We computed a multiple regression equation which includes SVI and BISV as independent factors $(r^2=0.60);\;Y=0.711+0.046X_1+0.205X_2$ (Y: the severity of sublingual veins, $X_1:\;SVI,\;X_2:\;BISV$). Conclusions: We conclude that the severity of sublingual veins can be quantified through SVI and BISV, minimizing the clinicians' subjectivity and the diversity of lighting conditions.

  • Objectives : The comparison of symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism with symptoms according to spleen and kidney show how many points of similarity they are. And by analysis of symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism it was examined that Kidney Jeonggyeok help to cure many different symptoms including symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism. Methods : The symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism were compared and analyzed according to standards of the book of korean traditional medical pathology. First, this study was designed to show to found out how many symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism belong to symptoms of kidney qi-deficiency and slpeen qi-deficiency and how similar they are. Second, the symptoms of kidney qi deficiency were compared with the indicant of kidney Jeonggyeok suggested by two of korean traditional doctors to find out kidney Jeonggyeok can help to cure symptoms of kidney qi deficiency. And then on the basis of those, the symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism were compared with the symptoms of kidney qi deficiency. Results : The hypoadrenocorticism seems to be kidney yang(陽) deficiency. But because hypoadrenocorticism doesn't have body temperature decline, symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism are more similar symptoms of kidney qi deficiency than symptoms of kidney yang deficiency. The symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism seems to be correlated with the functions of spleen. But because of vomiting and pigmentation(skin and mucous membrane), they seem to have less to do with the functions of spleen than the functions of kidney. The comparison analysis of indicant of Kidney Jeonggyeok and symptoms of kidney qi deficiency shows that acupuncture stimulation help to cure kidney qi deficiency and hypoadrenocorticism. Conclusions : Symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism are expected to be more similar symptoms of kidney qi deficiency. And Kidney Jeonggyeok is helpful for treatment of Kidney qi deficiency and hypoadrenocorticism.

  • Objectives : Portulaca oleracea (PO) have been used as a traditional medicine to treat inflammatory diseases in Korea. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of PO ethanol extract on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation is not well-known. Therefore, this study was performed to identify the anti-inflammatory effect of PO on LPS induced inflammatory. Methods : Identification of PO was conducted by comparison with purified standards by HPLC. To measure out the cytotoxicity of PO, author performed the MTT assay. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of PO, author examined the inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin, (IL)-1β and IL-6) on RAW 264.7 cells. Author also examined molecular mechanisms such as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor-B (NF-κB) activation by western blot. Results : Three major components (peaks 1, 2, 3) were detected in both varieties and peak 1 was characterized as caffeic acid, peak 2 as p-coumaric acid, and peak 3 as ferulic acid by comparison of chromatographic properties with authentic standards. Extract from PO itself did not have any cytotoxic effect in RAW 264.7 cells. PO inhibited LPS-induced productions of inflammatory mediators such as NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines in RAW 264.7cells. In addition, PO inhibited the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2), c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and NF-κB activation in RAW 264.7 cells. Conclusions : Above experiment data can be an important indicator for the identification of PO and this study suggest that treatment of PO could reduce the LPS-induced inflammation. Thereby, PO could be used as a protective agent against inflammation.

  • Objectives: Toad venom, called Chan-Su, is a traditional Oriental medicine secreted from the auricular and the skin glands of the Bufo bufo gargarizanz Cantor or B. melanosticus Schneider and has been widely used in China, Korea and other parts of Asia for the treatment of pain, heart conditions, and cancer. We examined the concentrations of the main chemical constituents within a commercially available toad venom product and compared the levels for different extraction methods. Methods: Toad venom was extracted using either cold or hot water, ethanol (EtOH), methanol (MeOH), or ethyl acetate (EtOAc), was fractionated using precipitation or reflux, and was then analyzed using thin layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HTLC), and liquid chroma-tography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Individual components were identified by comparisons of the retention times, the ultraviolet spectra, and mass spectras and differences in chemical constituents for different solvents and extraction methods are presented. Results: Components with authentic standards, including serotonin and bufodienolides (cinobufagen, bufalin, cinobufalin, and resibufogenin), were detected. The water extract of toad venom contained the greatest amount of serotonin ($75.7{\pm}0.1$ mg/g), but very small amounts of bufodienolides ($3.8{\pm}0.0$ mg/g). In contrast, the use of MeOH or EtOH extraction solutions resulted in 5-26 times higher concentrations of bufodienolides, with only trace amounts of serotonin. The relative and the absolute concentrations of the component also varied based on the extraction method; i.e., EtOH extracts yielded the greatest total amounts of bufodienolides, and EtOAc precipitation had the lowest amounts of bufodienolides. Conclusions: Toad venom consists of serotonin and several bufodienolides, and the choice of solvent to extract chemical the constituents is important as a way to enrich the purported active components for treating different conditions.
