  • Computer aided process planning and Offline programming are decisive factors in successful implementation of automated robotic production. However, conventional offline programming procedure has proven ineffective due to time-consuming teaching process for robot programming and due to inefficient system modeling. The paper presents an efficient procedure to semi-automatically generate robot job programs for ship block welding applications. In the research, the teaching positions are automatically determined by predefined rules which are functions of the type and the dimensions of the given welding section of ship block. And a sequence of robot movements and welding conditions such as welding type, welding current, welding speed, and welding torch orientation, are determined by use of Standard Program which is experimentally proved to work well for the welding wection group. Finally, a robot program for the welding section is generated automatically. Based on the algorithm, a offline automatic teaching software is developed. The paper presents also the algorithm and structure of the software.

  • A simple and rapid procedure, called FoLT-PCR(Formamide Low Temperature-Polymerase Chain Reaction) was applied to amplifying DNA directly from various forensic biological evidences including human blood, saliva, hair root, or semen without any DNA preparative steps. We added washing step with non-ionic detergent, 1% Triton X-100, and used Taq DNA polymerase instead of Tth DNA polymerase to amplify 3 STR loci and gender allele simultaneouly. Optimal concentration of formamide and annealing temperature were determined empirically to 8%(v/v), and $48^{\circ}C$ respectively. We also compared this method with standard PCR.

  • The alternative method for symmetric configuration in optical link consisted of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation for compensating of the distorted optical signals due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects of standard single mode fiber is proposed. The symmetric configuration means number of fiber spans, dispersion distribution in former half section and latter half section, etc should be symmetrical about optical phase conjugator. In dispersion-managed proposed in this research, optical phase conjugator is located after former half section consisted of 6 fiber spans and before latter half section of 14 fiber spans, and the averaged residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of each half section are consistence. The compensation effects of the distorted signals in the proposed link is analyzed by comparing with the results obtained in dispersion-managed link with the unequally averaged RDPS of each half section. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that RDPS deviation between adjacent fiber span has a grater effect on the compensation than the equivalent of the averaged RDPS.

  • Recently the importance of BIM (Building Information Modeling) that enables 3D location-based design and construction work is being highlighted around the world. In Korea, the road map has been established to settle the design based on BIM using drone survey results by 2025. As the first step, BIM would be applied to road construction projects worth more than 50 billion Korean Won from 2020. On the other hand, drone survey regulation has been enacted and the data for drone survey cost were also included on Standard of construction estimate in 2020. However, more careful improvement is required to reflect drone survey results in BIM design and construction. Currently, Engineering instructions and Standard of construction estimate specifies that earthwork volume must be calculated by cross section method only. So it is required to add the method of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) based volume calculation on these regulations to realize BIM application. In order for that, this study verified the method of DEM based earthwork volume calculation. To get an accurate DEM for accurate volume computation, drone survey was carried out according to the drone survey regulation and then could get an accurate DEM data which have errors less than 3cm in X, Y and 6.8cm in H. As each DEM cell has 3D coordinate component, the volume of each cell can be calculated by obtaining the height of area of the cell then total volume is calculated by multiplying total number of cells by volume of each cell for the construction area. Verification for the new calculation method compare with existing method was carried out. The difference between DEM based volume by drone survey and cross section based volume by traditional survey was less than 1.33% and it can be seen that new DEM method will be able to be applied to BIM design and construction instead of cross section method.

  • For an axially loaded box-shaped member, the width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements preferably should not be greater than 40 for Q235 steel grades in accordance with the Chinese code GB50017-2003. However, in practical engineering the plate width-to-thickness ratio is up to 120, much more than the limiting value. In this paper, a 3D nonlinear finite element model is developed that accounts for both geometrical imperfections and residual stresses and the ultimate capacity of welded built-up box columns, with larger width-to-thickness ratios of 60, 70, 80, and 100, is simulated. At the same time, the interaction buckling strength of these members is determined using the effective width method recommended in the Chinese code GB50018-2002, Eurocode 3 EN1993-1 and American standard ANSI/AISC 360-10 and the direct strength method developed in recent years. The studies show that the finite element model proposed can simulate the behavior of nonlinear buckling of axially loaded box-shaped members very well. The width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements in welded box section columns can be enlarged up to 100 for Q235 steel grades. Good agreements are observed between the results obtained from the FEM and direct strength method. The modified direct strength method provides a better estimation of the column strength compared to the direct strength method over the full range of plate width-to-thickness ratio. The Chinese code and Eurocode 3 are overly conservative prediction of column capacity while the American standard provides a better prediction and is slightly conservative for b/t = 60. Therefore, it is suggested that the modified direct strength method should be adopted when revising the Chinese code.

  • In 1976, the Dalkon Shield-intrauterine device injured several thousand women in U.S.A. which caused the changes of medical deivce regulation. The Medical Device Regulation Act or Medical Device Amendments of 1976 (MDA) was introduce. As part of the process of regulating medical devices, the MDA divides medical devices into three categories. The class II, and III devices which have moderate harm or more can use the section 510 (k), premarket notification process if the manufacturer can establish that its device is "substantially equivalent" to a device that was marketed before 1976. In 21 U.S.C. ${\S}$ 360k(a), MDA introduced a provision which expressly preempts competing state laws or regulations. After that, the judicial debates had began over the proper interpretation and application of Section 360(k) In February 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Riegel v. Medtronic that manufacturer approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s pre-market approval process are preempted from liability, even when the devices have defective design or lack of labeling. But the Supreme Court ruled in Medtronic Inc. v. Lora Lohr that the manufactures which use the section 510 (k) process cannot be preempted and in Bausch v. Stryker Corp. that manufactures which violated the CGMP standard are also liable to the damage of patient at the state courts. In 2009, the Supreme Court ruled in Wyeth v. Levine that patients harmed by prescription drugs can claim damages in state courts. This may cause a double standard between prescription drugs and medical devices. FDA Preemption is the legal theory in the United States that exempts product manufacturers from tort claims regarding Food and Drug Administration approved products. FDA Preemption has been a highly contentious issue. In general, consumer groups are against it while the FDA and pharmaceutical manufacturers are in favor of it. This issues also influences the theory of product liability of U.S.A. Complete immunity preemption is an issue need to be more declared.

  • Structural stability of structural beams at high temperature had been evaluated though a horizontal furnace and a standard fire curve. If a structural method and a material are satisfied with the fire test, those are seemed to be guaranteed the safety of residences, fire services men, and properties of the buildings. However, that requires not only longer period but higher cost for making and testing of each structural element. That restrained from developing new methods and new fire protective materials. In this study, an analytic method was executed to demonstrate whether the analytic method using mechanical properties of structural steel at high temperature with heat transfer theory works is working. In this paper, the surface temperature rising and variance of structural stability of a simple H-section beam with a standard fire curve were evaluated and structural stabilities of H-section beam according to differences from length of beam were suggested.

  • For the application TBM tunneling method, Both tunnel design standard and case study designed & constructed in domestic and foreign have been conducted. According to the study, the number of lane and inner shape (single or duplex) vary depending on the volume of traffic. Also extra space located in the top and bottom of tunnel is used for a multipurpose such as ventilation, disaster prevention, maintenance and administration. To find area ratio according to the components of road TBM tunnel, a standard section was considered as a two-lane road. Then, the analysis of area ratio of this section which consists of components for clearance, extra space in upper and lower tunnel was carried on two widths of shoulder. In addition, after a structural analysis, a thickness requirement of lower slab which is essential for road tunnel was derived on a few supporting types. Through correlation analysis, the ranges of available cross-sectional area between slab thickness and lower extra space of the tunnel was presented.

  • Over-coating is one of the most popular engineering practices to strengthen Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures, due to the relative quickness and ease of construction. It consists of an external coat bonded to the outer surface of the structural RC element, either by the use of chemical adhesives, mechanical anchor bolts or simply mortar injection. In contrast to these constructive advantages, the numerical estimation of the bearing capacity of the strengthened reinforced concrete element is still complicated, not only for the complexity of modelling a flexible membrane or plate attached to a quasi-rigid solid, but also for the difficulties that raise of simulating any potential delamination between both materials. For these reasons, the standard engineering calculations used in the practice remain very approximated and clumsy. In this work, we propose the formulation of a new 2D solid-layer finite element capable to link a solid body with a flexible thin layer, as it were the "skin" of the body, allowing the potential delamination between both materials. In numerical terms, this "skin" element is intended to work as a transitional region between a solid body (modelled with a classical formulation of a standard quadrilateral four-nodes element) and a flexible coat layer (modelled with cubic beam element), dealing with the incompatibility of Degrees-Of-Freedom between them (two DOF for the solid and three DOF for the beam). The aim of the solid-layer element is to simplify the mesh construction of the strengthened RC element being aware of two aspects: a) to prevent the inappropriate use of very small solid elements to simulate the coat; b) to improve the numerical estimation of the real bearing capacity of the strengthened element when the coat is attached or detached from the solid body.
