강원도 중왕산 지역 천연활엽수림에서 간벌작업이 강우와 낙엽에 의한 양분 유입에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Thinning on Nutrient Input by Rainfall and Litterfall in Natural Hardwood Forest at Mt. Joongwang, Gangwon-do)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 강원도 평창군에 위치한 중왕산 지역에서 천연활엽수림 내 간벌작업지와 비작업지에서 양분 유입의 차이를 비교하는 것이었다. 임내강우와 임외강우, 낙엽낙지에 의한 양분 유입량과 토양수 내 양분 농도를 조사하기 위하여2002년부터 2004년까지 임내강우와 임외강우, 토양수는 매년 6월부터 10월 사이에 격주간 채취하였고, 낙엽낙지는 매년 9월과 10월에 채취하였다. 조사 기간동안 강우 차단율은 간벌작업지에서 12%, 비작업지에서 18%였다. 수관통과우와 수간류에 의한 양분 유입량은 간벌작업지와 비작업지에서 차이를 보이지 않았다. 토양수 내 이온 농도는 A층에서는 $Na^+$, $Cl^-$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$ 이온이, B층에서는 $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$ $NO_3{^-}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$ 이온이 비작업지에서 다소 높았다. 연간 낙엽낙지량은 간벌작업지에서 $2,589kg\;ha^{-1}$로, 비작업지의 $2,706kg\;ha^{-1}$보다 적은 유입량을 보였다. 낙엽낙지에 의한 양분 유입량은 N의 경우, 간벌작업지에서 $36.81kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$, 비작업지에서 $50.28kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$였으나, 양이온의 유입량은 차이가 없었다. 이를 종합해 볼 때, 본 연구에서 수관통과우와 수간류 및 낙엽낙지에 의한 양분유입량의 간벌에 의한 영향은 질소를 제외한 다른 양분에서는 없었던 것으로 나타났다.

Relationship between Maximum Stem Volume and Density during a Course of Self-thinning in a Cryptomeria japonica Plantation

  • Cryptomeria japonica plantation was monitored every year during 15 years from 1983 to 1997 for stem diameter and volume. The reciprocal equation, 1/Y = A + B/N, was applied to the relationship between cumulative volume Y and cumulative number N from the largest tree in the stand each year. The parameters A and B, which means respectively the reciprocal of an asymptotic value of total stand stem volume and the reciprocal of the maximum stem volume, are related by a power function. The power functional relationship between A and B derived a linear relationship of B-points ( $N_{B}$, $V_{B}$; $N_{B}$ = B/A, $Y_{B}$ = 1/2A) of each Y-N curve on log-log coordinates. The gradient of B-point line was so steep that the Y-N curve moved parallel upward year by year. The time trajectory of mean stem volume (W) and density ($\rho$) provided evidence in favor of the 3/2 power law of self-thinning, because the gradient of W - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates approximated to -3/2 at the final stage of stand development. On the basis of the results of Y-N curves and W - $\rho$ trajectory, the time trajectory of maximum stem volume $W_{max obs}$ and $\rho$ was derived theoretically. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates is calculated to be -0.6105 at the final stage. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory was steeper than that of W - $\rho$ trajectory at the early stage, while the former is gentler than the latter at the later stage.stage.e.age.e.

Effects of Forest Tending Works on Carbon Storage in a Pinus densiflora Stand

  • We conducted research to determine the effects of forest tending works (FTW) on forest carbon (C) storage in Korean red pine forests by estimating changes in the quantity and distribution of stored organic C in an approximately 40-year-old red pine stand after FTW. We measured organic C storage (above- and belowground biomass C, forest floor C, and soil C at 50 cm depth) in the Hwangmaesan Soopkakkugi model forest in Sancheonggun, Gyeongsangnam-do before and after the forest was thinned from a density of 908 trees/ha to 367 trees/ha. The total C stored in tree biomass was 69.5 Mg C/ha before FTW and 38.6 Mg C/ha after FTW. The change in total C storage in tree biomass primarily resulted from the loss of 19.9 Mg C/ha stored in stem biomass after FTW. The total C pool in this red pine stand was 276 Mg C/ha before FTW and 245.1 Mg C/ha after FTW. Prior to FTW, 71.5% of the total C pool was stored in mineral soil, 25.2% in tree biomass, and 3.3% in the forest floor, where as after FTW 80.5% of the total C pool was stored in mineral soil, 15.7% in tree biomass and 3.7% in the forest floor. These results suggest that the development of site-specific tending techniques may be required to minimize the loss of tree biomass C storage capacity in red pine stands from FTW.

Species Diversity, Composition and Stand Structure of Tropical Deciduous Forests in Myanmar

  • The characterization of tree species and forest stand conditions is useful in the planning of activities aimed to conserve biodiversity. The main objective of this study was to describe tree species diversity, species composition and stand structure of tropical deciduous forests distributed in three regions in Myanmar. Forest inventory was conducted in the Oktwin teak bearing forest, the Letpanpin community forest and Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park. According to the Jackknife estimator of species richness, 85 species (${\pm}18.16$), 70 species (${\pm}5.88$) and 186 species (${\pm}17.10$) belonging to 31 families were found in the Oktwin teak bearing forest, 33 families in Letpanpin community forest and 53 families in Alaungdaw Kathapa national park, respectively. Shannon's diversity indices were significantly different among the forests (p<0.05). It ranged from 3.36 to 4.36. Mean tree density (n/ha) of the Oktwin teak bearing forest, Letpanpin community forest and Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park were 488 (${\pm}18.6$), 535 (${\pm}15.6$) and 412 (${\pm}14.1$), while basal areas per hectare were $46.96m^2({\pm}3.23),\;49.01m^2({\pm}5.08)\;and\;60.03m^2({\pm}3.88)$, respectively. At the family level, Verbenaceae, Myrtaceae and Combretaceae occupied the highest importance value index, while at the species level it was Tectona grandis, Lagerstoremia speciosa and Xylia xylocarpa.

Weather Conditions Drive the Damage Area Caused by Armillaria Root Disease in Coniferous Forests across Poland

  • Armillaria root disease affects forests around the world. It occurs in many habitats and causes losses in the infested stands. Weather conditions are important factors for growth and development of Armillaria species. Yet, the relation between occurrence of damage caused by Armillaria disease and weather variables are still poorly understood. Thus, we used generalized linear mixed models to determine the relationship between weather conditions of current and previous year (temperature, precipitation and their deviation from long-term averages, air humidity and soil temperature) and the incidence of Armillaria-induced damage in young (up to 20 years old) and older (over 20 years old) coniferous stands in selected forest districts across Poland. We used unique data, gathered over the course of 23 years (1987-2009) on tree damage incidence from Armillaria root disease and meteorological parameters from the 24-year period (1986-2009) to reflect the dynamics of damage occurrence and weather conditions. Weather parameters were better predictors of damage caused by Armillaria disease in younger stands than in older ones. The strongest predictor was soil temperature, especially that of the previous year growing season and the current year spring. We found that temperature and precipitation of different seasons in previous year had more pronounced effect on the young stand area affected by Armillaria. Each stand's age class was characterized by a different set of meteorological parameters that explained the area of disease occurrence. Moreover, forest district was included in all models and thus, was an important variable in explaining the stand area affected by Armillaria.

  • The flooded type battery is used for solar lighting system. Because the characteristic of flooded type battery is the short life time, the maintenance cost is high. So the using flooded type battery in this system is inappropriate. The valve regulated lead acid batter.(VRLA) is the maintenance free and cycle service purpose. This paper presents the development of control system and monitoring system to applied VRLA battery for maintenance free and long life time in system.

  • This paper presents a computational technique to predict roof crush resistance in early design stage of passenger car development. This technique use a simple F.E. model with nonlinear spring elements which represent plastic hinge behavior at weak areas. By assuming actual sections as equivalent simple sections, maximum bending moments which weak areas in major members can stand are theoretically calculated. Results from prediction of roof crush resistance are correlated well with test results.

  • In a turbopump cryogenic ball bearings are used to carry static and hydraulic loads, and these ball bearings must stand up to high load and speed in cryogenic circumstance. Verification of bearing performance is crucial to successful development of a turbopump. In this paper, focusing on the turbopump under developing by KARI, the performances of 203 and 207 bearings are verified through the series of tests simulating the real operating condition of turbopump.

  • This paper describes development of an implantable power switching system for biotelemetry system. This system is designed and manufactured to achieve as small size and low power dissipation as possible, using pulse powered circult and CMOS technology. The function of the power switching system is to connect the implantable battery to implanted sensors and, electronics systems by receiving intermittent command signals from external circuits. The power dissipation of this system was about $15{\mu}W$ for a stand-by operation.
