Comparison of Growth Characteristics Between Natural and Plantation Stand on Acer okamotoanum (자생지와 조림지에서의 우산고로쇠나무 생장특성 비교)

  • This study was undertaken to analyze 1) the growth characteristics for the optimal planting density and 2) reached ages of sap tapping for the planting timing of Acer okamotoanum in natural and plantation stand. Soil in natural stand was significantly more fertile than that of plantation stand. Early growth of A. okamotoanum in plantation stand was affected by planting density. Results showed that there was a positive relationship between the DBH and crown width in both natural and plantation stands. Reached ages by DBH were no significant difference in natural stands. Reached ages on DBH 10 cm were approximately 19 and 9 in natural and plantation stands, respectively.

Stand Development Estimate and Carbon Stocks/Removals Assesment using Stand Growth Monitoring (생장모니터링을 통한 임분변화예측 및 탄소흡수.저장량 평가)

  • This study looked into the change of tree growth of five forest growth monitoring plots which were set up at the Undulyeong Hongchungun Kangwondo, and was accomplished to provide the basic data for the forest management calculating carbon storage and absorption in the Undulyeong area. Annual height and DBH growth were slowly progressed in the Pinus koraiensis, Larix kaempferi, and Pinus densiflora stand which were at young stage, but the growth rates of the other stands were lower than those young stands. The diameter class of the mixed forest and Quercus mongolica and Betala platyphylla stand was predicted to be similar as it is and those of Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi stands were predicted to move to the upper diameter classes because of rapid growth rates of the those stands. As in the year 2005, total carbon storage of the Undulyeong model forest was increased by 155,000 TC(2.7%) compared with the previous year. During 2005, total carbon which was absorbed and stored according to growth of the forest was 166,174 TC and net carbon absorption (155,481 TC) increased by 2,736 TC (1.8%) compared with the previous year. Resultingly, the Undulyeong model forest is acting as a net sink and the net carbon absorption rate is slightly increasing recently.

Design of a Wind Tunnel for Plug Seedlings Production under Artificial Light and Aerodynamic Characteristics above Plug Stand (인공광하의 공정육묘용 풍동 설계 및 공정묘 개체군상의 공기역학적 특성)

  • A wind tunnel consisting of two air flow conditioners with polycarbonate pipes, a plant growth room, a suction fan and fan controller, and fluorescent lamps, was designed to investigate the interactions between the growth of plug seedlings under artificial light and their Physical environments. Light transmissivities in the plant growth room based on the photosynthetic photon flux density and photosynthetically active radiation was appeared to be 96.3% and 96.8%, respectively. Measurement showed a uniformity in the vertical profiles of air current speed at the middle and rear regions of plug trays in wind tunnel. This result indicated that the development of a wind tunnel based on the design criteria of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was adequate. Air current speed inside the plug stand was significantly decreased due to the resistance by the leaves of plug seedlings and boundary layer developed over and below the plug stand. Driving force to facilitate the diffusion of gas inside the plug stand might be regarded as extremely low. Aerodynamic characteristics above the plug stand under artificial light were investigated. As the air current speed increased, zero plane displacement decreased but roughness length and frictional velocity increased. Zero plane displacement linearly increased with the average height of plug seedlings. The wind tunnel developed in this study would be useful to investigate the effects of air current speed on the microclimate over and inside the plug stand and to collect basic data for a large-scale plug production under artificial light in a semi-closed ecosystem.

A study on Applying Dynamic Programming to Selection of Thinning Pathway for Pinus Koraiesis Stand (잣나무 임분의 간벌 pathway 선정을 위한 동적계획법 적용에 관한 연구)

  • Using dynamic programming, which is one of operations research techniques, the best pathway was chosen to maximize the total harvest volume for a Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) stand. This study was carried out in an age class III at Chuncheon National Forest, Gangwon province. That stand was assumed to apply 3 different thinning intensities of none, 30% and 50% thinnings. These thinning pathways are planned to implement two times, of thinning at 35 age and 55 age. The final cutting (rotation age) is assumed to carry out in 70 years. A growth function for Korean white pine stand was developed with forest inventory data, the volume was calculated with this growth function. As a result, the best thinning pathway for this Korean white pine stand using dynamic programming is to implement 30% at the first thinning and 50%at the second thinning.

  • In this survey, to estimate volume growth of pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill) stand, diameter growth was estimated. Among 223 sample trees, the number of rejected trees was 12, about 5 percent of total sample trees. The stand showed uniform growth and rejected trees included insect-damaged trees. Compared with reports made on forest classification basis, pitch pine a single species showed faster growth. Minimum, average and maximum value of D.B.H and mean annual diameter growth, of 16 year old pitch pine stand, were as follow. The correlation of each factors estimated by 9590 of confidence interval is shown in the table of correlation as bellow.

Stand Structure of the Natural Broadleaved-Korean Pine Forests in Northeast China

  • Based on the data representing four typical Korean pine forest types, the age structure, DBH distribution, species composition, and forking rule were systemically analyzed for old-growth Korean pine forest in Liangshui Nature Reserve, northeast China. The age structure of Korean pine trees was strongly uneven-aged with one dominated peak following normal distribution, and age of trees varied from 100 to 180 years within a stand. The DBH and height differences in same age class (20 years) varied from 28 cm~64 cm and 5 to 20 m, respectively. Many conifer and hard wood species, such as spruce, fir, costata birch, basswood, oak, and elm, were mixed with dominated trees of Korean pine. The canopy of the old-growth Korean pine forest can be divided into two layers, and differences of mean age and height between Layer I and Layer II were ranged 80~150 years and 7~13 m, respectively. The Weibull function was used to model the diameter distribution and performed well to describe size-class distribution either with a single peak in over-story canopy and inverse J-shape in under-story canopy for old-growth Korean pine stands. The forking height of Korean pine trees ranged from 16m to 24 m (mean 19.4 m) and tree age about 120 to 160 years old. The results will provide a scientific basis to protect and recover the ecosystem of natural old-growth Korean pine and also provide the model in management of Korean pine plantation.

Stand Structure and Growth Characteristics at Different Elevations of the Korean Pine(Pinus koraiensis) Natural Forest on Mt. Seorak (설악산 잣나무(Pinus koraiensis) 천연림의 해발고별 임분구조 및 생장특성)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the stand structure and growth characteristics along different elevations of Pinus koraiensis natural forests located at mean elevation 1,300 m (site1), 900 m (site2) and 600 m (site3) on Mt. Seorak. Mean DBH and height of P. koraiensis were 25.4 cm and 12.3 m in site1, while that of site2 and 3 were over 40 cm and 20 m, respectively. For this reason, there was 5 times difference of single tree volume between site1 and other sites(p<0.05). Mean ringwidth increment of P. koraiensis was 1.1 mm/yr in site1, 1.5 mm/yr in site2 and 2.6 mm/yr in site3. However, recent growth of ringwidth has increased by 8.6% in site1, whereas site2 and 3 have fallen by approximately 50% over the last 10 years. These results signify that the growth and distribution of natural P. koraiensis are effected by different climatic environment along elevations.

The Estimation of Stand Biomass and Net Carbon Removals Using Dynamic Stand Growth Model (동적 임분생장모델을 이용한 임분 바이오매스 및 탄소흡수량 추정)

  • This study presents a method how to estimate the change of stand volume, the stand biomass and the carbon removals, using dynamic stand growth model according to whether the practices for forest management are implemented or not. As a result, it shows that the rate of stand change was significantly high if the practices were implemented. Consequently, the change of carbon removals was also high. The carbon removals at the stand where the practices were not implemented, was estimated about 0.27tC/ha. And the carbon removals at the stand where the practices were implemented, was estimated 166.02tC/ha(thinning from above) and 163.75tC/ha(thinning from below). It is confirmed that the thinning activities has a great influence on the change of carbon removals and there was little difference of the carbon removals between thinning types. From this result, it is proved that forest management like thinning activities is prerequisite condition to improve the carbon removals of stand.

The Effect of Birds in the Families Ardeidae and Corvidae on Stand Structure in Bamboo Groves

  • We investigated death rates, growth rates and recruitment of culms in two neighboring bamboo (Phyllostachys bamboosoides) stands nested in by two different bird species to analyze stand structure and to design conservation strategies. A third bamboo grove not used by birds, the Taewha stand, was included as a control stand. The bamboo stand occupied by birds in the family Ardeidae (the Ardeidae stand) had an approximately 1.5 times higher culm density than the stand occupied by birds in the family Corvidae (the Corvidae stand). The crude death rate and the number of newly emerged shoots were also higher in the Ardeidae stand than the Corvidae stand. The death rate for bamboo in the Ardeidae stand was not dependent on diameter at breast height (DBH) and was almost 40% for culms of all sizes, whereas most dead culms in the Corvidae stand were < 4 cm DBH. Consequently, we conclude that in the Ardeidae stand, density-independent causes of death are operating, while density-dependent factor are more important in the Corvidae site. The results of soil analysis in these stands suggest that the density-independent death pattern observed in the Ardeidae stand may be due to soil acidification resulting from wastes produced by the birds during breeding. On the other hand, the culm distribution and death patterns in the Corvidae stand suggest that the stand characteristics were not affected by the nesting birds. These results suggest that different conservation strategies must be applied to conserve bamboo groves used by ardeids and corvids for nesting.

Comparative Height Growth and Forest Structure of Fraxinus Spaethiana and Pterocarya Rhoifolia in Natural Reforestation Stands in Steep Valleys of Central Japan

  • Height-growth analysis was used to examine forest structure and compare Pterocarya rhoifolia and Fraxinus spaethiana growth characteristics within and between each species in two P. rhoifolia-dominant and two F. spaethiana established contemporaneously in the sere, species vertical stratification 25 years after stand initiation was such that P. rhoifolia dominated the overstory but F. spaethiana the understory, including that P. rhoifolia grew about 4 times more rapidly Similarly, F. spaethiana dominated the overstory but not the understory, in a stand where it established mainly by itself, 25 years after Initiation. However, comparing the two different stands, P. rhoifolia overstory heights were about two times greater than F. spaethiana. This suggests that in a disturbance regime, forest regeneration is affected by height-growth patterns such that P. rhoifolia's ability to achieverapid height growth allows it to dominate where lights growth allows it to dominate where light resources are continuously abundant.
